June 18, 2009

CBSSports.com wire reports

LONDON -- Rafael Nadal still looked hampered by his injured knees in an unsuccessful transition to grass Thursday and will decide Friday whether he is fit enough to defend the Wimbledon title.

Nadal played without tape on his sore knees but frequently looked a step slow in losing 6-4, 6-3 to Lleyton Hewitt in an exhibition match at the Hurlingham Club in London. It was Nadal's first match after losing to Robin Soderling in the fourth round of the French Open.

Nadal did not speak to reporters, but his uncle and coach Toni said it was still uncertain whether he can play at Wimbledon, which starts Monday.

Nadal plays another match against Stanislav Wawrinka on Friday, and Toni Nadal said the top-ranked player will make a decision after that.

‘Very Difficult’ for Nadal to Play Wimbledon, Coach Says

By Danielle Rossingh

June 18 (Bloomberg) -- It will be “very difficult” for Rafael Nadal to play at Wimbledon in defense of his tennis title next week because of his knee problems, his uncle and coach Toni Nadal said.

He was speaking after Nadal lost today to Lleyton Hewitt in an exhibition match at Hurlingham Club in West London, his first match since exiting the French Open on May 31. He was testing his knees after suffering from tendinitis.

“At the moment it’s very difficult to play at Wimbledon, his knees are not good, he cannot bend,” the coach said. “This is his first match, we wait until tomorrow.”

Toni Nadal said that an electromagnetic machine had been used in an effort to deal with the problem but “at the moment it is not enough. We wait for tomorrow.”<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Federer Eyes Record 15th Grand Slam Title At Wimbledon; In Pursuit Of Regaining No. 1

The battle for the No. 1 position in the South African Airways 2009 ATP Rankings is heating up and there could be a change at the top after Wimbledon.

Roger Federer collected his first Roland Garros title on June 7 to complete a career Grand Slam and equal Pete Sampras' all-time Grand Slam titles mark of 14. The Swiss superstar finds himself a Wimbledon title away from regaining No. 1, depending on Nadal's result.

Federer went into Roland Garros 4,490 points behind the Spaniard but after winning the title, he cut the margin to 2,070 points on 8 June. Both players withdrew from grass court tournaments in preparation for Wimbledon and will lose 450 points from their respective 2008 titles won in Halle (Federer) and Queen's (Nadal).

If Federer wins his sixth Wimbledon title and Nadal loses before the semi-finals, then the Swiss will regain No. 1 on July 6. World No. 3 Andy Murray could go to No. 2 by winning Wimbledon but no higher. Even if Murray wins Queen’s his points total won't change as it would replace the 250 that he won at Doha in January. His 0-point penalty from Indianapolis stays on for 12 months and will drop on July 20.

Here is a round-by-round points breakdown after Wimbledon (with the Djokovic points total based on him winning the Halle title. An adjustment will be made if he does not win the title):

Mumbai: Defending champion Rafael Nadal was on Wednesday named as the top seed in Wimbledon this year ahead of five-time champion Roger Federer.

Wimbledon traditionally employs a unique seeding system where they take into account previous results at the grass court championships and there was a strong case for Federer to be named the top seed because he has reached the last six finals.

But the elevation of Nadal and sundry other changes indicate that the All England Club may be moving towards a uniformity in the game which perhaps brings in the paying public but takes away much of the character of tennis.

The International Tennis Federation has long been trying to tamper with the pressure in the ball to make it slower through the air and ensure more service returns.

In other words, players with a booming service game, such as three-time champion (1985, '86, '89) Boris Becker or 2001 winner Goran Ivanisevic will now become a rarity.

The reduction in pressure, which can vary between two to five per cent of what used to be the norm, has already resulted in more and more clay court specialists making it to the last four at the Mecca of grass court tennis.

There are more rallies than ever and baseline grinders stand a much better chance of progressing into the second week, not because they are adaptable or better than past generations but because it is so much easier.

And as if tampering with the balls is not enough, the grass at Wimbledon, which used to be lightning fast and aided the classic serve and volley tennis, has been made considerably slower.

After last year's men's singles final, when Nadal defeated Federer in one of the best matches in the history of tennis, nine-time Grand Slam champion Leander Paes had told DNA that "the grass at Wimbledon had become very slow."

And not only Leander, former world No.1 from Australia, Patrick Rafter, had said after Nadal's win last year: "I didn't see the Wimbledon final but it's incredible how slow the grass is now. Goran (Ivanisevic) spoke to Federer about it and told me that's why Federer doesn't serve and volley. It's just too slow.

"I think Wimbledon needs to change its grass and make it quicker because, to me, watching grass court tennis from the baseline is not how it should be played.

"It's fine for clay but not for grass. They should make it quicker."

Another factor that is sure to play a part this year is the retractable roof on the Centre Court. Though designed to defeat the famously fickle English weather and aid uninterrupted play, it can end up reducing the breeze and make the game even slower.

With the 2009 edition beginning Monday, the question is, is the game better served with variety and character or is monotonous uniformity the future of tennis?
