Bryan must surrender the title at Payback or Brie Bella is fired

First things first: “yes,” Daniel Bryan is still the WWE World Heavyweight Champion. And “yes,” the Champion of Champions paid dearly for his latest show of insubordination toward Stephanie McMahon. Or, to be precise, his wife did. On Raw, Bryan made his faithful proud by resisting The Authority’s latest attempts to deny him his hard-won glory, yet Stephanie’s firing mood didn’t end with Brad Maddox by a long shot. Unwilling to make Bryan a martyr by stripping him of the title, she instead delivered him an ultimatum: Surrender the title at WWE Payback, or Brie Bella, who put hands on Stephanie two weeks earlier, would be fired.

Suddenly, the line between “yes” and “no” just got that much more profound.

The Shield vs. Evolution (No Holds Barred Elimination Match)

After toppling Evolution in a wild brawl that had a raucous capacity crowd shouting “This is awesome!” at Extreme Rules, The Shield will have another opportunity to prove themselves when they meet Triple H, Randy Orton & Batista at WWE Payback in the ultimate battle of attrition: a No Holds Barred Elimination Match.

Unlike at Extreme Rules, the match on Sunday, June 1, won’t end after a single fall. To win the contest, one team will have to eliminate all three members of the opposing side. Given the format, it’s entirely possible the six-Superstar match will turn into a lopsided affair, and with no holds barred, disqualifications will not be an option. The additional stipulations were announced on the Raw Pre-Show on May 19.

Since their watershed victory over Evolution, Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins & Dean Ambrose have found themselves placed into one disadvantageous situation after another. On the May 5 edition of Raw, then-U.S. Champion Ambrose lost the champion’s advantage when Triple H forced him to defend the title in a 20-Superstar Battle Royal. Sheamus eventually won, ending The Lunatic Fringe’s 351-day title reign. Later that same night, Evolution dealt The Shield a brutal beatdown following The Hounds of Justice’s intense match against The Wyatt Family.

At WWE Payback, both teams’ stamina, vigor and strength — not to mention unity — will be put to the test in a match that’s survival of the fittest. Triple H says Evolution, unlike their opponents, knows what it takes to win a war. Will the terrorizing triumvirate of The King of Kings, The Viper and The Animal defeat in detail and employ a divide-and-conquer strategy to upend The Hounds of Justice? Or will The Shield beat Evolution at their own game, scoring payback for Evolution’s sneak attacks and Triple H’s heavy-handed authority?

John Cena vs. Bray Wyatt (Last Man Standing Match)

Bray Wyatt has poached John Cena’s supporters, threatened his legacy and vowed to take him on a trip from which there is no returning. At WWE Payback, the world will see just how far “The Eater of Worlds” is truly willing to go when he and the Cenation leader face off in a Last Man Standing Match.

Reserved for sports-entertainment’s most ferocious grudges, there are no pinfalls, submissions, count-outs or disqualifications in a Last Man Standing Match. The object of the contest is to incapacitate your opponent to the point he cannot answer the referee’s count of 10, demonstrating just how severe the Cena-Wyatt dispute has become.

Call it sinister brainwashing or altruistic coaxing, the charismatic orator known as Bray Wyatt has obsessively tried convincing Cenation to “follow the buzzards.” The campaign has gained some traction, as more and more WWE fans seem to join the chorus, “He’s got the whole world in his hands.” Declaring himself “God,” Wyatt has pledged to rip away Cena’s supporters while burning down the world, only to rebuild it in his own image.

Yet, the stalwart Cenation leader has made clear that despite Wyatt’s threats, the 14-time World Champion continues to live by the simple maxim expressed on his shirt: Never give up. No matter how down and out he may appear, no matter how many supporters he does or does not have, Cena insists he will never back down.

The upholder of hustle, loyalty and respect has so far endured the head games, but can he silence Wyatt at WWE Payback? Or will buzzards be circling overhead when “The Man of 1,000 Truths,” who claims he’ll be left standing when all else crumbles, gets through with the Cenation leader?

Intercontinental Champion Bad News Barrett vs. Rob Van Dam

Intercontinental Champion Bad News Barrett will face one of the winningest Superstars in the title’s illustrious history, six-time champion Rob Van Dam, at WWE Payback on June 1.

RVD earned the right to face the brawling Brit by winning a Beat the Clock Challenge featuring past Intercontinental Champions on the May 19 edition of Raw, which emanated from Barrett’s home country of England. “Mr. Monday Night” trumped Alberto Del Rio in 4:15, besting the times of other Beat the Clock competitors. Immediately after RVD was deemed the new top contender, Barrett pounced with a sneak attack.

For Van Dam, the June 1 title match not only represents a chance at reclaiming the championship gold, but also an opportunity to score redemption against Barrett. It was against the pessimistic Preston, England, native that the extreme Superstar nearly won the Intercontinental Championship No. 1 Contender spot weeks ago.

RVD and Barrett fought in the finals of a tournament to determine an opponent for then-champion Big E. Thanks in part to interference by Cesaro, Van Dam lost that match, and Bad News went on to make the most of his golden opportunity, defeating Big E at Extreme Rules and claiming his fourth Intercontinental Title.

What will be in store when these two tough-as-nails combatants meet up again, this time for the title, at WWE Payback? Will Barrett’s trademark Bad News Bull Hammer Elbow strike win out, or will The Whole Dam Show’s seemingly endless repertoire of kicks find the mark and pave the way for a title-clinching Five-Star Frog Splash?

United States Champion Sheamus vs. Cesaro

Cesaro will challenge United States Champions Sheamus for the title at WWE Payback on June 1, WWE.com has confirmed.

The championship contest caps off a recent series of hard-hitting, non-title matches between The Swiss Superman and The Celtic Warrior. The first meeting, on the May 13 edition of WWE Main Event, saw Cesaro and Sheamus brawl outside the ring and into the WWE Universe, resulting in a double count-out. Even after the bell rang, WWE officials struggled to separate the two bruisers; Cesaro attacked Sheamus with a steel chair, but The Dublin-born bruiser rebounded with a Brogue Kick.

Sheamus and Cesaro fought again the following week on Raw, where a distraction by Paul Heyman enabled The Swiss Superman to clasp on a waist lock and drill the U.S. Champion with bridging German suplex for the pin. Sheamus offered a congratulatory handshake afterward, but the smug Cesaro brushed it off, adding fuel to the fire of the already personal rivalry.

With the prized U.S. Title at stake and both Superstars looking to beat respect into the other, who will emerge from Chicago with the United States Title? Will the Cesaro Swing find its mark, giving way to a Neutralizer and Cesaro’s second U.S. Championship reign? Or can Sheamus’ Beats of the Bodhran and Brogue Kick help The Celtic Warrior retain the title?

Divas Champion Paige vs. Alicia Fox

It’s always difficult to predict what Alicia Fox will do next, but one thing’s for certain: The leggy Floridian will vie for the Divas Championship when she takes on Paige this Sunday at WWE Payback.

Nearly four years after the wily Fox last laid claim to the Divas Title, the off-kilter competitor has come unhinged in pursuit of the coveted prize now held by the youngest Divas Champion in history. It was Alicia’s defeat at the hands of Paige on the May 12 edition of Raw that unleashed a side of her personality yet unseen by the WWE Universe, leading the boisterous beauty to tear apart the ringside area and abscond with JBL’s hat.

The bizarre antics continued the following night on WWE Main Event, exclusively on WWE Network. After suffering a roll-up loss to Emma — another new arrival from WWE NXT — Fox had another massive meltdown, attacking commentators and ring announcer Tony Chimel in an apparent fit of frustration.

Fox’s startling new mindset finally reaped rewards on the May 19 Raw when she pinned Paige in a non-title encounter, giving The Diva of Tomorrow her first loss since debuting on the main WWE roster the night after WrestleMania. That victory has catapulted the fiery Fox into the Divas Title picture as she prepares to wrest the championship from the raven-haired titleholder’s grasp.

Although Paige might be young, the Norwich-born prodigy has been lacing up wrestling boots since she was 13 years old, and competed all over the world before entering WWE’s developmental system at the age of 18. After ending the unprecedented 295-day reign of prior titleholder AJ Lee in her first night as a WWE Diva, Paige turned back the imposing Tamina Snuka at Extreme Rules, proving that her post-WrestleMania triumph was far from a fluke.

Just as Paige has continued to impress with her in-ring aggression and formidable Scorpion Crosslock submission hold, so too has Alicia dropped jaws with her bombastic new attitude. What will happen when these two indomitable Divas collide?

Rusev vs. Big E

For the first time since his intimidating introduction to WWE, Rusev will square off with a competitor who exhibits equally imposing strength and explosiveness. This Sunday at WWE Payback, the 300-plus-pound powerhouse will go head-to-head with Big E in a showdown that is sure to be a hard-hitting affair

Since his debut, The Bulgarian Brute has not only defeated, but destroyed every opponent thrown his way, doing so at his Social Ambassador Lana’s cruel command. In addition to the burly Bulgarian’s unsympathetic brutality inside the ring, The Ravishing Russian’s verbal assault on America has generated a great deal of disdain from the WWE Universe.

Rusev’s ruthless Social Ambassador took her attack on all things American one step too far when she ordered her client to “crush” WWE Hall of Famer “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan on the May 12 edition of Raw. Fortunately for the WWE Legends’ House star, Big E had enough of the Russia residents’ callous tactics, saving the patriotic Superstar from impending danger before getting knocked from the ring by The Super Athlete.

Two weeks later, after bumping Rusev from the ring, Big E proudly waved Old Glory in the face of his foreign foe. Now, with patriotic pride raising the stakes, the Florida native has payback on his mind and hopes for a Big Ending to his conflict with Rusev.

Hornswoggle vs. El Torito (Hair vs. Mask Match)

The biggest little rivalry in WWE will intensify in a major way when El Torito and Hornswoggle tangle on WWE Payback Kickoff in an ultra-rare Mask vs. Hair Match. If El Torito wins, Hornswoggle will be forced to shave his head. If Hornswoggle prevails, Los Matadores’ corner man will be unmasked.

The WWE Universe assuredly remembers El Torito and Hornswoggle’s breathtaking “WeeLC” Match from Extreme Rules — a fast-paced, high-risk contest that resulted in shattered tables, dented ladders and bruised bodies. As physically brutal as that contest was, at WWE Payback, WWE fans will witness two Superstars who are willing to put a piece of their very identities at stake in order to claim bragging rights.

A member of 3MB, Hornswoggle has taken on a rocker’s lifestyle in recent months, and there are few things as important to a rock star’s persona than to maintain the perfect head of music video-ready hair.

That’s not to suggest El Torito’s wager is anything less than monumental for the acrobatic bull. Clearly rooted in the rich history of lucha libre, El Torito is prepared to sacrifice an article of ring gear that’s much more than a simple accessory. To a luchador, the mask is nothing less than a part of his soul, an integral component of his DNA.

Qual?

Sheamus vs Cesaro pelo US Champ.
