EURO 2020 to open in Rome, more London games, venues paired

Rome's Stadio Olimpico will host the opening game of UEFA EURO 2020, Wembley will stage three group matches, a round of 16 game plus the semis and final, while the venue pairings have been confirmed.

 

The Stadio Olimpico in Rome has been picked to host the opening game of UEFA EURO 2020 after the UEFA Executive Committee made a number of decisions relating to the tournament venues during its meeting in Nyon today.

• The Stadio Olimpico in Rome has been selected as the venue for the opening match.
  
• Due to the Eurostadium project's failure to meet the conditions imposed by the UEFA Executive Committee during its meeting of 20 September 2017, the four matches (three group, one round of 16) initially scheduled to be held in Brussels will now be allocated to London's Wembley Stadium following a vote by the committee. This means Wembley will host a total of seven matches since London was already set to stage the semi-finals and final of the tournament.
  
• The host city pairings have been decided by means of a random draw – from six different lists of city pairings established on the basis of sporting strength and geographical considerations – and will be as follows:
  
  • Group A: Rome and Baku
    
  • Group B: Saint Petersburg and Copenhagen
    
  • Group C: Amsterdam and Bucharest
    
  • Group D: London and Glasgow
    
  • Group E: Bilbao and Dublin
    
  • Group F: Munich and Budapest

O agrupamento das cidades podia ter sido um bocado mais pensado.

Sei que foi aleatório, mas as selecções que ficarem no grupo A vão ter que se deslocarem entre Roma e Baku, uma distância gigantesca quando comparada com o Grupo D que tem duas cidades separadas por uma viagem de avião de 1h30.
