The Bad Blood Publicado 4 Março 2008 Draft Watch: Bayless rising, Mayo falling on draft boards By Chad Ford ESPN.com With college basketball's regular season winding down and the NCAA Tournament just two weeks away, it's time to check in on the draft status of some NBA prospects. Over the past month, we've had significant movement in our top 10 and throughout the top 100. Insider spoke with a number of NBA scouts and executives to get their takes on who's hot and who's not on the draft stock meter. Here's what they're saying … Who's Hot Jerryd Bayless, G, Freshman, Arizona Bayless began the season as a potential mid-first-round pick. Scouts loved his scoring ability, quickness and athleticism, but had questions about his position. Was he really a point guard or just another undersized 2-guard? Bayless' fantastic season has quieted critics, who now put him among the top five freshmen in the country. His numbers speak for themselves: He's averaging more than 20 points per game while shooting a high percentage. His explosiveness and shooting ability make him a prospect in the mold of the Bulls' Ben Gordon. However, his ability to handle the ball full time for Arizona has scouts convinced that he can be a scoring point guard in the pros. The comparisons range from Chauncey Billups (remember, it took Mr. Big Shot awhile to become an elite point guard) to Gilbert Arenas. Given the number of teams that need help at the point guard position, it looks as though Bayless is a lock for the top 10 and possibly a top-five pick. Look for him to get a lot of workouts alongside Indiana's Eric Gordon. While most scouts prefer Gordon to Bayless, some feel that Bayless, because of his versatility, is now the better prospect. Anthony Randolph, PF, Freshman, LSU Randolph is perhaps the most unheralded freshman in the country. He plays on a bad team and didn't enter college with the hype of other top freshman prospects. But a growing number of scouts are saying he has as much upside as anyone in the draft. About six weeks ago we moved him into the 20s on our big board and three weeks ago he catapulted into the top 10. The buzz on him is red hot. Randolph is a 6-foot-11 forward with crazy long arms, explosive athleticism and tons of energy. He crashes the boards, blocks shots and finds ways to score both inside and out. While he's still developing his offensive game, Randolph is drawing comparisons to Chris Bosh and LaMarcus Aldridge. But like Bosh and Aldridge, Randolph needs to hit the weight room. He's already put on nearly 20 pounds since high school, but scouts would like to see him in the 240 range by the time he plays his first NBA game. Given the craziness at LSU at the moment, NBA sources think he's nearly a lock to declare this year. If he does, he'll quickly become one of the hottest names in the draft. There are very few players in the draft with his size, athleticism and skill set. He is ranked No. 7 on our big board, but he has a legit shot at the top five. Blake Griffin, PF, Freshman, Oklahoma Griffin is another player who has rocketed up the charts the past few months. While scouts have always been high on him, he was seen, for the most part, as a top prospect in 2009, not 2008. However, his recent play has changed some minds. Griffin is a physical, athletic big man who can dominate the paint on both ends of the floor. He possesses a powerful low-post game that draws comparisons to Carlos Boozer's and he's a terrific rebounder and low-post defender. While Griffin needs work on his perimeter game and low-post moves, he's more physically ready than most to compete at the NBA level, though there are some concerns about Griffin's knees. He sprained his ACL in one knee in mid-January and then partially tore his medial meniscus in the other knee on March 1. He's expected to miss the rest of the regular season, but the school is saying he'll be back for the Big 12 tournament starting March 13. Griffin has repeatedly said he'll return to Oklahoma for his sophomore season. His brother, Taylor, is also on the team and will be a senior next season. We'll have to wait and see whether he changes his mind given his draft position. Next year, he'll project as a potential top-five pick in the draft. Right now we have him ranked as the No. 8 prospect on our big board. Russell Westbrook, PG, Sophomore, UCLA For two years, pro scouts have been raving about UCLA point guard Darren Collison. But over the past month, scouts have been pointing at Collison's backup -- Westbrook -- as the best pro prospect on the Bruins. While not all pro scouts agree, a handful -- including one respected GM -- have him ranked as the second-best point guard in the draft behind Memphis' Derrick Rose. Westbrook was excellent filling in when Collison missed the first six games of the season. And, lately, he's had a starting job as a 2-guard, where he still has chances to handle the ball and run the offense. As of Sunday, Westbrook averaged more assists per game than Collison in slightly fewer minutes. What scouts like about Westbrook is his potent combination of size, elite athleticism and quickness. Defensively, he can be a nightmare by using his length, speed and physicality to cause turnovers. While Westbrook could use another season at UCLA running the point, more and more NBA executives now have him as a late lottery selection if he declares this year. A few have him in the top 10 and one in the top five. We moved him into the lottery a couple of weeks ago at the No. 12 spot. But on draft night, it wouldn't be a shock to see him go in the 5-7 range. Who's Not O.J. Mayo, SG, Freshman, USC Mayo was ranked No. 1 on our Big Board in July. Some of that had to do with hype, but most of it had to do with Mayo's game. He already had the body and athleticism of an NBA player. He was an excellent scorer and scouts said they thought he would be a full-time point guard in the pros. Mayo has proved he has the ability to score at USC. But the point guard thing hasn't materialized. He's looked fairly one-dimensional this season -- his assist and rebound totals are underwhelming. Some of that isn't Mayo's fault as he's asked to play off the ball and carry the team on offense. But scouts looking for something more than a shoot-first 2-guard have been disappointed. Some are calling Mayo the next Jerry Stackhouse -- a guy who never met a shot he didn't like or a defensive set he did like. Scouts are being too critical in my mind. The backlash against Mayo has been too severe given his numbers. As a freshman, he's averaging more than 20 points per game in one of the toughest conferences in college basketball and shooting a respectable percentage from the field. His assist-to-turnover ratio isn't pretty … but he's been asked to do a lot. The fact that he played Rose to a draw and outplayed Arizona's Bayless stands out. But the truth is that if scouts are skeptical, then he's got to prove himself during workouts. Right now he's ranked No. 9 on our draft board. But I think teams like the Knicks and Clippers will take a long look at him earlier in the draft. Chase Budinger, G/F, Sophomore, Arizona Budinger also came into the season ranked very high, but hasn't met scouts' expectations. While his numbers at Arizona have been good, I think he's being punished a bit for his inconsistency and the team's poor play. Scouts feel he should be a leader on the team and they've been disappointed. On paper, Budinger should be a very high pick. He has great size for his position, has excellent athleticism and can really shoot the basketball. But his lack of leadership, his laid-back approach to defense and his inconsistency have dropped him a notch or two in the minds of scouts. He's fallen out of our top 10 for the first time in his career and he's now ranked No. 14 on our Big Board. Great workouts will help his cause, but he's got some work to do. Donte Greene, F, Freshman, Syracuse A few weeks ago, Greene was one of the hottest names in the draft. The lanky combo forward was putting up big numbers for Syracuse and, based on his athleticism and potential, looked like a lock for the top 10. Almost immediately we put him on our hot list, his game tanked. He had just eight points on 2-for-15 shooting against UConn. He went 4-for-16 on 3-pointers against Georgetown. He had nine points on 3-for-15 shooting against Louisville. And then he had a five-point stinker against Notre Dame. During that stretch the Orange went 1-5 and Greene's stock plummeted. While he still remains an intriguing prospect with excellent upside, I think his chances of landing in the top 10 have taken a major dive. It now looks as if Syracuse won't make the NCAA Tournament. And if Greene can't show off there, he may have to wait until next year to impress scouts. Darrell Arthur, F, Sophomore, Kansas Arthur is another talented sophomore who has disappointed some scouts. His numbers are better this season, but they don't scream lottery pick right now. He has great size, athleticism and a body that is beginning to fill out. And, offensively, he's very talented around the rim and developing a soft touch from the perimeter. But he's very inconsistent and disappears for long stretches. One possible explanation for his inability to live up to expectations is the depth of Kansas. The Jayhawks have so many weapons that they don't need to rely on Arthur. When he gets the ball he can do great things with it … but sometimes it's a big "if." Still, his lackluster work on the boards is what really has scouts concerned. His 5.9 rebounds per game is too low for someone of his size and ability. He's ranked No. 17 on our big board at the moment. He definitely has the chance to go higher, based on his upside, but he'll need a big NCAA Tournament. Chad Ford covers the NBA for ESPN Insider. TOP 10 NAME HT POS FROM STOCK 1. Michael Beasley 6-10 PF Kansas State Stock Up Best outside-inside talent in the draft. A lock for the No. 1 pick if character questions check out. 2. Derrick Rose 6-3 PG Memphis Stock Up The best pure point guard in the draft could push for the No. 1 overall pick. 3. Eric Gordon 6-4 SG Indiana Stock Up Do-it-all combo guard is already lighting up the box scores as a freshman. 4. DeAndre Jordan 7-0 C Texas A&M Stock Up Athletic big man has huge upside, but does he have the work ethic? 5. Brook Lopez 7-0 C Stanford Stock Up A big athletic center who is producing big numbers in the Pac 10. 6. Jerryd Bayless 6-3 PG Arizona Stock Up Athletic combo guard is putting up big numbers as a freshman at Arizona. 7.
