12-year-old boy arrested after parents are found dead and siblings critically injured

A 12-year-old Colorado boy was arrested yesterday after police responded to a phone call and discovered his parents dead and his two younger siblings critically injured.

Charles Long and his wife, 51-year-old Marilyn Long were found dead after their son called to report that shots were fired at his home in Burlington in eastern Colorado, near the Kansas border.

The boy called 911 on Tuesday night at 6:40 pm to report that three people had been shot, according to Steve Johnson of the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Upon arrival, Burlington police found the two bodies and two children, who had life-threatening wounds. The 12-year-old boy, who has not been named, was unhurt.

At a brief news conference at 2:30 pm today, Johnson said that the case has been sent to local prosecutors. The CBI has also said that there are no other suspects in the case.

‘The case has been referred to the district attorney for the filing of formal charges against the 12-year-old. There are no other suspects at this time. Again, we do not think that there is any further risk to the community,’ Johnson said.

'We continue to hope for the speedy recoveries of the two children in the hospital and share in the sorrow that the Burlington community is feeling right now,' he added.

Warrants in the case are currently sealed, and authorities aren't yet discussing any possible motives.

The two injured children, who are still in critical condition, were taken to Kit Carson County Memorial Hospital. From there the 5-year-old girl and a 9-year-old boy were airlifted to a hospital in Denver, where they remain in ‘dire’ condition.

Today the CBI called for ‘state wide support for the Burlington community in this time of sorrow and concern.’

Charles and Marilyn Long were the parents of seven children in total, four of whom are adults who have left the home, according to a neighbour. Charles was a delivery truck driver who worked 55 to 60 hours a week for Frito-Lay while Marilyn home-schooled their kids.

A coroner is currently conducting autopsies on the couple, with results expected within a day, Johnson said.

Neighbours and those close with the family, including their pastor, said today that they were stunned.

‘It's shocking. They're good Christian people. They go to church. As far as I know, they had a happy family. You don't expect this to happen in a small town like this,’ neighbour Josh Schlichenmayer said today.

Ron Lee, the family's pastor at the Evangelical Free Church who says he knew the Longs well, is equally stunned by the shootings. He described the Long’s 12-year-old boy as ‘pleasant, outgoing, and with a servant's heart.’

‘I can't comprehend any of this,’ Lee said.
