Join Guillem Balague on Sky Sports 1 at 7pm on Sunday January 11 as he explores the early life of Cristiano Ronaldo and the obstacles the superstar overcame to become the world’s greatest footballer.

 

 

The Making Of Ronaldo documentary asks the questions: Who were the influential figures in Ronaldo's early life? What sets him apart from the rest?

 

Balague travels to Ronaldo’s hometown on the island of Madeira, a poverty stricken part of Portugal where a young Ronaldo would play football “morning until night” with a bottle or a ball made of rags on the streets.

 

His rise to prominence was far from easy and we get the lowdown on his tough upbringing from his former youth team coaches and teammates.

 

We hear that even from a young age the word ‘defeat’ never entered his head as he possessed an inhuman desire to succeed that triggered a move at the age of just 11 to Sporting Lisbon.

 

Former Premier League star and another product of the Sporting Lisbon youth system Luis Boa Morte identifies the struggles that Ronaldo faced moving away from his family at such a young age.

 

Leonel Pontes, the current manager of Marítimo and a former mentor for Ronaldo, gives us an insight into the mind of a young Ronaldo, who used to sneak off the gym in the middle of the night in order to get ahead of the competition.

 

We see clips of Ronaldo’s very first games as a professional for Sporting Lisbon when he broke into the first-team and about how Arsene Wenger came close to signing him before Manchester United made their move for £12 million in 2003.
