Next NBA dynasty: Thunder or Heat?

With windows closing on LA and San Antonio, OKC and Miami can take the reins

By Chris Broussard and Ric Bucher

ESPN The Magazine

James and the Heat have star power, but Durant and the Thunder have plenty of upside.

Question: Which franchise has the best chance to be the next dynasty?

BUCHER: A case can be made for both the Los Angeles Lakers and San Antonio Spurs as dynasties over the past 10 years or so, and if the Boston Celtics win another title this year they might join the conversation as a mini-dynasty. But seeing how long in the tooth all three teams are, it would appear their days of dominance are waning. So which franchise is primed to succeed them and be a consistent powerhouse over the next 5-10 years? I see only a handful of teams right now that have reason to believe they can achieve that elite status, and the Oklahoma City Thunder are at the top of my list.

BROUSSARD: With LeBron James, Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade all signed on for the next five years in Miami (if they don't terminate their contracts after the 2013-14 season), I'll go with the Miami Heat. They're all still young -- LeBron (26), Wade (29), Bosh (26) -- and will only get better as they play together more and develop greater chemistry.

RB: There's no question the Heat have the best young core moving forward, a core that is entering the prime of their respective careers. No doubt they are going to be a force every single season for the next two or three, at the very least. But in bringing together the Super Friends, Pat Riley was forced him to mortgage the franchise's future and fill out the roster with stopgap veterans. Short of trading one of the Big Three, I don't see how they're going to get appreciably better than they are right now.

CB: Well, remember, outside the Big Three, you've got Mike Miller (30 years old), Udonis Haslem (30) and a solid Mario Chalmers (24). And even though the Heat's supporting cast isn't great, the only teams that could currently be considered better have core players who are much older -- Celtics, Spurs, Mavs, Lakers -- and should show decline next season. As it stands right now, the next three seasons, even without a great supporting cast, could easily belong to the Heat. I also believe they'll be able to add solid pieces here and there, players who are willing to take less money for a shot at winning a championship and being part of what will certainly be a rock-star/circus-type atmosphere.

RB: They'll add pieces here and there? With what? Miami doesn't have a first-round pick in 2013 or 2015. They're locked into essentially the current roster for the next two seasons at $65 million, and then they pay that same price for six players in 2011-12. Even worse, those same six players cost them $71 million in 2012-13. And while we don't know exactly what the next labor agreement will look like yet, it's pretty clear there's either going to be a hard cap, a serious curtailment of exceptions or both. I'm also not sold on what the oft-injured Mike Miller and the seriously injured Udonis Haslem are going to be able to provide over the next three seasons -- and they are productive, vital pieces.

One of my reasons for going with the Thunder, despite the fact that they have only two proven stars at this point -- Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook -- is that they're already a division leader with a year of playoff experience under their belts and have all the youth and flexibility in the world to keep adding to an already formidable crew.

CB: "With what?" That's what everyone said last summer after signing the Big Three left Miami with hardly any money, yet they got it done. Wonderful market, no state income tax, chance to win rings, South Beach -- those things appeal to players. They certainly appeal a lot more than Oklahoma City.

I agree that Durant and Westbrook are tremendous young players, but let's see this crew win a playoff series and handle "the burden of expectation" before we crown them future champions. We've seen young upstarts (Tracy McGrady, Vince Carter) show great promise only to fail to exhibit championship mettle once they become "the hunted." Some would argue that OKC has already been a bit disappointing; they're on a 53-win pace, which is below what many expected from them entering the season. After being projected by most (including myself) as this year's MVP during the preseason, Kevin Durant, while having a very good season, is probably not at the top of anyone's MVP list at this point. And for some reason, the Thunder have really fallen off defensively, going from a top-10 defensive team last season to the 22nd-ranked defensive team this season, one that allows opponents to shoot 46.8 percent from the floor. That's not championship-caliber defense, now or in the future.

RB: The Thunder aren't playing defense the way they did last season because they've come to realize they can outscore teams, and that's always more fun. It's also part of the growing pains of a young team. I find it somewhat funny that they're a disappointment, even though they're on track to win more games than last season, are leading their division and therefore assuring themselves of home-court advantage in the playoffs -- which they didn't have last postseason. Even more important, though, is that KD and Russ aren't going anywhere. Nor are Thabo Sefolosha and Nick Collison, who are locked up for three years at incredibly economical salaries. They have all their picks as well as a Los Angeles Clippers pick that is either a lottery choice or unprotected at some point.

The Thunder's payroll will assuredly grow, but as of right now they're committed to $39 million next season and no more than $22 million the following three seasons. It's a very good team with young superstars, young complementary players and assets to improve in the future. I don't know if they are championship material -- but I don't really know that about the Heat yet, either.

CB: Wade has proven he can win a title, and LeBron has proven he can play on the big stage. Now that we see what the Cavs are without him (and before you play the injury card, Anderson Varejao and Mo Williams were healthy for about half of this historic losing streak), people should be crediting LeBron for getting as far as he did with Cleveland instead of ripping him because he didn't get a ring. I'll take that track record over a crew that hasn't even won a playoff series and, just one year after its first playoff run, has decided that outscoring teams is "more fun" than defending. It's defense that wins championships, and that cliché has yet to be proven wrong in the NBA.

I like OKC a lot, as you do, but I'd take Miami over the Thunder now and later.

0:10, my bad.
