"Team Columbia-HTC" will ride the 2009 Tour de France under new three-year sponsorship agreement

 

High Road Sports, Inc., the owner of Team Columbia-Highroad and HTC Corporation, a designer of mobile phones, today announced a three-year sponsorship agreement that prominently places the HTC brand at the starting line of the 2009 Tour de France on July 4 in Monaco.

 

"High Road Sports is elated to be partnering with HTC, a recognized leader and growing global brand in mobile phones," said Bob Stapleton, Owner, Team Columbia-HTC. "Team Columbia-HTC is now sponsored by two leading companies in their related industries and we are ready to show the growing power of our partnership at this year's Tour de France," he added.

 

The team currently called Columbia-Highroad, and known in 2008 and 2009 as the team with the most victories in professional cycling, will compete as "Team Columbia-HTC" and will present the new team uniform in Monaco on July 3, the day before the start of the 96th Tour de France.

Vinokourov confirms comeback

 

Alexander Vinokourov will return to cycling when his two-year doping suspension ends this month and hopes to ride with his former Astana team.

 

"I want to announce that I will return to competitive cycling on July 24," Vinokourov said at a news conference in Monaco, where the Tour de France starts on Saturday.

 

"I do not see myself anywhere else than Astana. This team was created in 2006 with the Kazakh cycling federation; it is our baby."

 

He said negotiations were underway with the Kazakh cycling federation and team manager Johan Bruyneel.

 

"There are ongoing discussions. This team has been created for me, I do not see how an agreement could not be reached. "If there is no deal, Johan will have to leave the team," he added.

 

Vinokourov was banned for two years after testing positive for blood doping in the 2007 Tour de France. The 35-year-old has denied any wrongdoing.

 

He said he would probably take part in the Tour of Spain from Aug. 29 and in the world championships in Mendrisio, Switzerland, in September.

 

Vinokourov, who could join Spain's Alberto Contador and seven-times Tour champion Lance Armstrong at Astana, is also hoping to ride the Tour de France in the future.

 

"I am back for one or two years and I would like to do one more Tour de France and wear the yellow jersey, although I am realistic, I know I cannot win it," he said.

 

"I am doing this for my family, for the people of Kazakhstan and to regain the image I had before my ban."

Vinoukorov ameaça expulsar Bruyneel

CAZAQUE QUER VOLTAR PARA A "SUA" ASTANA

 

 

 

 

Alexander Vinoukorov conta os dia para voltar a pedalar. A 24 de julho o ciclista vê terminar a suspensão que lhe foi aplicada depois de um controlo positivo no Tour de 2007.

 

Vinokourov já fez saber que quer regressar à competição e elegeu a Astana, alegando que não vê outra equipa melhor do que esta para o fazer.

 

"Esta equipa foi criada em 2006 pela federação cazaque. É o nosso bébé", afirmou Vinoukorov que não se ficou por aqui. " A equipa foi criada por mim, não vejo como não chegar a acordo. Se não houver um, Johan (Bruyneel, diretor desportivo da Astana, n.d.r) terá de sair".

 

O ciclista, de 35 anos, adiantou querer regressar já na próxima edição da Volta a Espanha e nos Mundiais, a decorrer na Suíça, em setembro.

 

"Quero correr mais dois anos e gostaria de voltar ao Tour e vestir a camisola amarela. Mas sou realista e sei que não a posso conquistar. Faço-o pela minha família, pelas gentes do Cazaquistão e para voltar a ter a boa imagem que tinha antes da suspensão", justifica Vinokourov que, em 2007, foi punido por uma transfusão de sangue que nunca admitiu ter feito até hoje.
