Há uns tempos ouvi pessoal a falar disso. Mas vê bem, estamos a falar de um jogador que esteve mesmo um ano completo parado, o risco é elevadito, sim, de o contratarmos, apesar de ele ser muito novo. E a menos que arranjemos um poste de outro modo qualquer senão a Free Agency, a MLE vai ser usada num poste, em princípio.

 

Mas é um jogador razoável, que se estiver em boa forma é capaz de fazer 10-5, e o Riley já disse que devíamos ir buscar alguém, mas o poste neste momento é prioritário. Logo se vê.

Free agency has become a wondrous scam, satisfying only those that feed most off its frenzy -- the agents and the fans. The agents seeking a quick buck for their favorite clients and the fans seeking a quick fix for their favorite teams.

The players get paid. The fans get excited.

 

But rarely does the marriage result in the underlying team objective -- erecting a championship cornerstone.

 

The Red Wings won the Stanley Cup mostly through developing those they drafted.

 

The Boston Celtics won the NBA championship a year after winning only 16 games through blockbuster trades that added Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen to a mix including Paul Pierce, whom the Celtics drafted 10th overall in the 1998 draft.

 

This much is certain. There are no miracles waiting when the free agency shopping begins Tuesday in both the NHL and NBA. There are no franchise players out there, merely nice complementary pieces that could supplement an established core.

 

James Posey proved himself a valuable reserve, getting a championship ring in Miami in 2006 and with the Celtics. But is it really worth overpaying for him? There are potential sign-and-trade possibilities for the Pistons with young restricted free agents like 22-year-old Atlanta forward Josh Smith.

 

But if you're the Pistons, seeking bold, decisive personnel changes, it's basically a waste of time.

 

The Pistons don't lure stars because they've discouraged them.

 

That attitude must change.

 

The acknowledgement that they're openly courting opposing teams' stars in trade discussions this summer is a wink toward the summer of 2010, when several franchise players become available through unrestricted free agency.

 

It could become the most talented free agency class ever in professional sports in that there will be five players -- LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Amare Stoudemire and Joe Johnson -- with already one NBA championship, two NBA Finals, four U.S. Olympic team invitations and 16 All-Star appearances among them and not one of them will be older than 30 in 2010.

 

If that doesn't whet the appetite, then there will be an available 32-year-old former league MVP (Dirk Nowitzki) and a just-turned-31 Michael Redd, one of the game's deadliest perimeter sharp shooters.

 

Every move made now, every bad contract pushed away, every bad contract inherited is done with one eye directed two summers away.

 

Rip Hamilton's contract comes off the books in 2010. If Joe Dumars seems intent on saving Hamilton from this summer's anticipated purge, then it would make sense bringing in another $10-million contract that goes through 2010 as well, freeing up in excess of $20 million for free-agent spending.

 

One would assume that the Pistons would become an attractive destination for stars hungry for championship contention.

 

But the Pistons have only attracted blemished free agents.

 

Signing Chauncey Billups in the summer of 2002 might rank as one of the NBA's greatest free-agent thefts, but there were sizeable doubts regarding his ability. Antonio McDyess was considered damaged goods because of his knees when the Pistons signed him in July 2004. He's become one of the league's better free-agent values.

 

But acknowledged stars don't come here when offered a choice.

 

There have been various rationalizations, like seeking a warmer year-round climate or even concerns about the city's negative perception regarding crime and lifestyle.

 

But, quite honestly, the second argument is garbage. The Pistons play and practice next door to each other, 30 minutes away from Detroit city limits. If a player chose, he wouldn't have to set foot in Detroit for one second for business purposes, such as going to home games or traveling to the airport for road games.

 

The city has nothing to do with it.

 

The Wings have better luck luring top free agents than the Pistons because NHL stars are more open to sacrificing individual production and financial gain for collective success than their NBA counterparts.

 

But that might change in 2010, and it's time that the Pistons prepare for when free-agent-shopping season truly becomes exciting.

Os nomes mais falados são o Duhon, Pargo, Udrih, Arroyo, Dooling, Tyronn Lue e Anthony Carter. O Monta Ellis também interessava, mas só por sign-and-trade. E sabe-se que ele gostava muito de jogar em Miami.

 

Para poste, falava-se no Diop, mas deve voltar para Dallas.

Ainda gostava de saber porque motivo os draftados em 2003 tiveram contractos iniciais logo até 2010 e os draftados em 2005 apenas até 2009.
