Martina Navratilova (born October 18, 1956) is a Czech American and former Czechoslovak tennis player and a former World No. 1. Billie Jean King said about Navratilova in 2006, "She's the greatest singles, doubles and mixed doubles player who's ever lived."

 

Navratilova won 18 Grand Slam singles titles, 31 Grand Slam women's doubles titles (an all-time record), and 10 Grand Slam mixed doubles titles. She reached the Wimbledon singles final 12 times, including 9 consecutive years from 1982 through 1990, and won the women's singles title at Wimbledon a record 9 times. She and King each won 20 Wimbledon titles, an all-time record. Navratilova is one of just three women to have accomplished a career Grand Slam in singles, women's doubles, and mixed doubles (called the Grand Slam "boxed set") a record she shares with Margaret Court and Doris Hart. She holds the open era record for most singles titles (167) and doubles titles (177). She recorded the longest winning streak in the open era (74 consecutive matches) and three of the six longest winning streaks in the women's open era. Navratilova, Margaret Court, and Maureen Connolly share the record for the most consecutive Grand Slam singles titles (six). Navratilova reached 11 consecutive Grand Slam singles finals, second all-time to Steffi Graf's 13. In women's doubles, Navratilova and Pam Shriver won 109 consecutive matches and won all four Grand Slam titles in 1984. In addition she won the season ending WTA Tour Championships a record 8 times and made the finals a record 14 times. Navratilova is the only man or woman to have won 8 different tournaments at least 7 times.

 

Originally from Czechoslovakia, she was stripped of her citizenship when, in 1975 at the age of 18, she asked the United States for political asylum and was granted temporary residency. At the time, Navratilova was being told by the Czechoslovakian Sports Federation that she was becoming too Americanized and that she should go back to school and make tennis secondary. Navratilova became a US citizen in 1981, but on January 9, 2008, she had her Czech citizenship restored. She stated she has not renounced her American citizenship nor does she plan to do so and that the restoration of her Czech citizenship was not politically motivated.

 

Navratilova is a member of the Laureus World Sports Academy. She also serves the Health and Fitness Ambassador for AARP in an alliance created to help AARP's millions of members lead active, healthy lives.

Andre Kirk Agassi (Las Vegas, Estados Unidos, 29 de Abril de 1970) é um ex-tenista estadunidense.

Ganhou oito títulos do Grand Slam e é um dos sete tenistas a ter vencido todos os quatro torneios do Grand Slam (Andre Agassi --1999--, Roger Federer --2009-- e Rafael Nadal --2010-- conquistaram o feito na era moderna, em superfícies diferentes. Antes, Roland Garros era disputado no saibro, mas os outros todos ocorriam na grama). Muitos consideram-no entre os melhores tenistas de todos os tempos e o melhor devolvedor de saques, ou serviços, (service returner) da história. Para a tristeza de seus muitos fãs, Agassi anunciou sua aposentadoria após sua participação no Us Open 2006. Jogou a sua última partida no ATP Tour no dia 2 de Setembro de 2006, quando perdeu na 3a rodada do US Open contra o alemão Benjamin Becker por 5-7/7-6/4-6/5-7. Despediu-se em lágrimas e perante uma apoteótica multidão que o aplaudia de pé. Agassi teve como maior rival Pete Sampras.

O estatuto de Federer deriva dos seus numerosos recordes, entre os quais 16 títulos de Grand Slam e um career Grand Slam (vitória nos quatro torneios do Grand Slam, recorde partilhado com cinco tenistas). Petros “Pete” Sampras (12 de Agosto de 1971, Washington, DC) é um ex-tenista profissional americano. É considerado por muitos como um dos maiores jogadores de todos os tempos. Sampras é o detentor do segundo maior número de torneios Grand Slam de tênis com 14 conquistas (atrás apenas de Roger Federer, com 16) , sendo 7 em Wimbledon, porém nenhum título de campeão em Roland-Garros. O fato de ser tão eficiente na grama e ineficiente no saibro se deve ao seu estilo de jogo, saque e voleio.

 

Sampras venceu 64 torneios profissionais na carreira e manteve-se na liderança do ranking da ATP por 286 semanas,um recorde até hoje não superado, terminando como melhor tenista do ano entre 1993 e 1998. Teve como maior rival o ex-tenista André Agassi, com quem travou famosas batalhas dentro das quadras.

 

Em 25 de Outubro de 2009, Sampras jogou uma partida-exibição contra Agassi em Macau, na China, e venceu por 2 sets a 1 (3-6, 6-3, 10-8 no super tie-break)

Stefanie Maria Graf (born 14 June 1969, in Mannheim, Baden-Württemberg, West Germany) is a former World No. 1 German female tennis player.

 

In total, Graf won 22 Grand Slam singles titles, second among male and female players only to Margaret Court's 24. In 1988, she became the first and only tennis player (male or female) to achieve the Calendar Year Golden Slam by winning all four Grand Slam singles titles and the Olympic gold medal in the same calendar year.

 

Graf was ranked World No. 1 by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) for a record 377 total weeks—the longest period for which any player, male or female, has held the number one ranking since the WTA and the Association of Tennis Professionals began issuing rankings. She also holds the open era record for finishing as the year-end World No. 1 the most times, having done so on eight occasions. She won 107 singles titles, which ranks her third on the WTA's all-time list after Martina Navratilova (167 titles) and Chris Evert (154 titles).

 

A notable feature of Graf's game was her versatility across all playing surfaces, having won each of the four Grand Slams at least four times, the only player to do so. She won six French Open singles titles (second to Evert) and seven Wimbledon singles titles (third behind Navratilova and Helen Wills Moody). 2000

 

In 2000, Hewitt reached his first Grand Slam final at the Wimbledon mixed doubles partnering Belgian Kim Clijsters. They lost the match 6–4, 7–6 to Americans Kimberly Po and Donald Johnson. Hewitt would later win his first Grand Slam title at the US Open when he along with Max Mirnyi claimed the men's doubles championship; thus becoming the youngest male (at 19 years, 6 months) to win a slam doubles crown in the Open Era.[5] At the end of the year, Hewitt became the first teenager in ATP history to ever qualify for the year-end Tennis Masters Cup (ATP World Tour Finals).

 

2001

 

Hewitt started off the 2001 season well by winning the Medibank International in Sydney, and would go on to win tournaments in London (Queen's Club) and 's-Hertogenbosch. He captured his first Grand Slam singles title at the US Open in 2001, when he blitzed former World #1 Yevgeny Kafelnikov in the semifinals and defeated then-four time champion Pete Sampras the next day in straight sets. This win made Hewitt, Pat Rafter, and Kafelnikov as the only active ATP players to win a Grand Slam singles and doubles title during their career. Hewitt has since been the last player to achieve this feat. Lleyton went on to win the Tokyo Open and again qualify for the year-end Tennis Masters Cup held in Sydney. During the tournament, Hewitt won all matches in his group before defeating Sébastien Grosjean 6–3, 6–3, 6–4 in the finals to take the title and gain the world number 1 ranking.

The year 2001 is considered to be Hewitt's best year, winning a total of 6 titles. He was also nominated for the 2001 best sport's player award by state premier Isaac Narouz.

 

2002

 

The year 2002 would again be a solid year for Hewitt winning three titles in San Jose, Indian Wells and London (Queen's Club). He followed his 2001 US Open win by capturing the Wimbledon singles title, dominating first-time finalist David Nalbandian in straight sets; Hewitt lost only two sets throughout the entire championship. His victory reinforced the idea that although the tournament had tended to be dominated by serve-and-volleyers, a baseliner could still triumph on grass (Hewitt was the first baseliner to win the tournament since Agassi in 1992). Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, who are also baseliners, won all titles between them from 2003 to 2010.[citation needed]

For his third straight year, Hewitt qualified for the year-end Tennis Masters Cup held in Shanghai and successfully defended his title by defeating Juan Carlos Ferrero in the finals 7–5, 7–5, 2–6, 2–6, 6–4. Hewitt's win helped him finish the year as world number 1 for a second straight year.

 

2003

 

In 2003 Hewitt defeated former world #1 Gustavo Kuerten for the championship at Indian Wells. But at Wimbledon, as the defending champion, Hewitt lost in the first round of Wimbledon to qualifier Ivo Karlović. Hewitt became the first defending Wimbledon men's champion in the open era to lose in the first round. Only once before in the tournament's 126-year history had a defending men's champion lost in the opening round, in 1967, when Manuel Santana was beaten by Charlie Pasarell. Hewitt was only the third defending Grand Slam champion in the open era to lose in the first round, after Boris Becker at the 1997 Australian Open and Patrick Rafter at the 1999 US Open. After Wimbledon in 2003, Hewitt lost in the final of the tournament in Los Angeles, the second round of the ATP Masters Series tournament in Montreal, and the first round of the ATP Masters Series tournament in Cincinnati. At the US Open, Hewitt lost in the quarterfinals to Juan Carlos Ferrero 4–6, 6–3, 7–6(5), 6–1. Hewitt played only Davis Cup matches for the remainder of the year, recording five-set wins over Roger Federer and Juan Carlos Ferrero in the semi final and final respectively, as Australia went on to win the Davis Cup. Hewitt used much of his spare time in late 2003 to bulk up, gaining 7 kg.

 

 

2004

 

In 2004, Hewitt became the first man in history to lose in each Grand Slam singles tournament to the eventual champion. At the Australian Open, he was defeated in the fourth round by Swiss Roger Federer. At the French Open, he was defeated in a quarterfinal by Argentine Gastón Gaudio. At Wimbledon, he was defeated in a quarterfinal by Federer. And at the US Open, he was defeated in the final by Federer, losing two out of the three sets at love. At the year ending 2004 Tennis Masters Cup, Hewitt defeated Andy Roddick to advance to the final but was yet again defeated by defending champion Federer .

James Scott "Jimmy" Connors (born September 2, 1952, in East St. Louis, Illinois, also known as "Jimbo") is an American former World No. 1 tennis player. He held the top ranking for 160 consecutive weeks from July 29, 1974, to August 22, 1977 (record at that time), and an additional eight times during his career (a total of 268 weeks). He won eight Grand Slam singles titles and two Grand Slam doubles titles with Ilie Năstase and was the mixed doubles runner-up with Chris Evert at the 1974 US Open. Connors also won three year end championship titles including two WCT Finals and one Masters Grand Prix. In addition he won 19 Championship Series titles (1973-1984).

 

He is a former coach of Andy Roddick, the winner of the 2003 US Open. Connors himself was coached by Pancho Segura, since age 16, in 1968. Although Connors never won the French Open, his victory at the 1976 US Open came during the brief period (1975–77) when that tournament was held on clay courts. Connors is, therefore, one of only five men (Mats Wilander, Andre Agassi, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are the others) to have won a Grand Slam singles title on grass courts, hard courts, and clay courts.

 

Connors also won the US Open singles championship itself on grass courts, hard courts, and clay courts, the only man to accomplish that trio of wins. Ganhou o primeiro Grand Slam profissional em 1985, chegou ao número um do mundo pela primeira vez em agosto de 1990.Tinha como maior rival o alemão Boris Becker,com quem travou jogos memoráveis. Lembrado por ter um incrível jogo de rede e um dos backhands mais bonitos da história. Stefan Edberg venceu 6 Grand Slams, sendo 2 Australian Open, 2 Wimbledon e 2 US Open. Dentre os grandes feitos, também merece destaque o fato de ele ter encerrado o ano de 1990 e o ano de 1991 como tenista número 1 do mundo.
