Andei a pesquisar e não encontrei nenhum tópico a fazer referência ao golfe. Talvez não tenha muitos comentários, mas não custa nada tentar.

 

Neste preciso momento disputa-se o último major do ano, o PGA Championship. Depois de Phil Mickelson vencer o Masters de Augusta e os surpreendentes McDowell e Oosthuizen vencerem o US Open e o The Open, respectivamente, quem irá vencer esta semana?

 

Neste momento e com a chuva a ter a sua palavra, Matt Kuchar lidera com 8 tacadas abaixo do par.Seung Yul Nol está com 6 tacadas abaixo do par e logo de seguida seguem-se vários jogadores com 5 tacadas abaixo do par, estando entre eles Rory McIlroy.

Golfe

 

Golfe é um esporte de origem escocesa, inspirado num jogo romano chamado Paganica. Consiste em arremessar, com ajuda de um taco, uma pequena bolinha ao longo de um percurso que termina num buraco - onde a bolinha deve cair. O golfe é jogado em campos de grama, em parques apropriados, com um ou mais percursos delimitados. O objetivo do jogo é colocar a bolinha nesse buraco com o mínimo de tacadas possível. Para dificultar a tarefa, o trajeto até o buraco pode incluir pequenos lagos, poços de areia, árvores e locais com grama mais alta.

 

O campo de golfe oficial deve ter 18 percursos, que para fins práticos são chamados mesmo de buracos. Assim, um jogador diz que está no buraco 12, por exemplo, quando está percorrendo o caminho que leva ao buraco de número 12. O número de tacadas de cada jogador é acumulado e vence quem "fizer" os 18 buracos com um menor número de tacadas. Os jogadores caminham ao ar livre pelo menos quatro quilômetros por jogo. Uma partida costuma durar em média quatro horas.

 

As mulheres começaram a jogar golfe profissionalmente somente em 1944.

 

Hole in one

 

Hole in one é a jogada na qual o golfista acerta a bola no buraco com apenas uma tacada. As competições profissionais costumam oferecer prêmios especiais para quem consegue realizar essa proeza. Nas competições amadoras, o costume é o jogador que fez o hole-in-one oferecer aos outros jogadores presentes no clube, como uma refeição ou bebidas. As regras de golfe proíbem que amadores recebam dinheiro.

Laura Cox foi a primeira golfista a conseguir dois holes in one em dois buracos consecutivos. Isso aconteceu em Maio de 1977, em Sydney, na Austrália. Nenhum homem tinha conseguido essa proeza antes.

 

Caddie

 

Caddie é o nome que recebe o carregador da bolsa com os tacos do golfista. Apenas em 1980 as mulheres também passaram a ser aceitas como caddies. O conhecimento do campo de golfe e a observação constante dos jogadores permitiu que muitos deles se tornassem golfistas ou professores de golfe. Os caddies são considerados esportistas.

 

Caddie avançado (forecaddie)

 

Um caddie avançado, é uma pessoa nomeada pela Comissão Técnica para indicar aos jogadores a posição das bolas durante o jogo. Ele é um agente externo.

 

Tees

 

Tee é o nome dado ao pino que pode ser usado sob a bola apenas na tacada inicial ou em condições extraordinárias de jogo (tee up)

 

Par

 

Par é o número de tacadas a fazer num determinado buraco.

 

O Par de um buraco é determinado essencialmente pela sua distancia.

 

Assim um buraco até 240 metros é um par 3, de 250 a 440 é um par 4 e de 450 a 620 é um par 5.

 

Da soma do Par dos 18 buracos resulta o Par do campo.

 

Birdie

 

Birdie é como é chamada a jogada onde coloca-se a bola no buraco com uma tacada a menos que o respectivo par.

 

Bogey

 

Quando se faz uma tacada acima do par. Se o buraco, por exemplo, é de par 4 e o jogador faz 5 tacadas, diz-se que ele fez um bogey.

 

Green

 

O «green» é toda a zona do buraco que está a ser jogado especialmente preparada para jogar com o «putter», ou de outra forma definida como tal pela Comissão Técnica.

 

Uma bola está no «green», quando qualquer parte da bola toca no «green».

 

Bandeira (flagstick)

 

A «bandeira» é uma haste rectilínea, móvel, com ou sem um pano de bandeira ou outro material pendurado, centrada no buraco para mostrar a sua posição. A sua secção transversal deve ser circular.

 

Juiz árbitro (referee)

 

«Juiz árbitro» é uma pessoa nomeada pela Comissão Técnica para acompanhar os jogadores a fim de decidir sobre questões de fato e aplicar as Regras. Ele deve atuar sempre que notar ou lhe for comunicada qualquer infração às Regras.

 

Um juiz árbitro não deve assistir à bandeira nem estar junto do buraco ou marcar a sua posição nem levantar ou marcar a posição da bola.

 

Bola em locais estranhos

 

Se a bola de golfe cair dentro de um lago perto do campo, o jogador poderá tirá-la e colocá-la o mais próximo do local onde a bola caiu. Por isso, receberá a penalidade de uma tacada extra. Caso o obstáculo seja uma banca de areia, não há nenhuma penalidade, o jogador tem de jogar dentro desse obstáculo.

Pois, na semana passada o Tiger acabou a prova com 18 acima do par.

 

Gosto muito do Mickelson. O seu short game e' fantastico. O Robert Rock tambem tem um futuro risonho a sua frente.

The European Ryder Cup Team Qualifications

 

The European Team will be selected employing the following criteria:

 

(a) The leading four players on The Ryder Cup World Points List (1) as of Sunday, August 29, 2010, or at the conclusion of the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles, whichever is the latter. In the event of a tie (equal number of points accumulated), placings will be decided by the player with the higher ranking on the Official World Golf Ranking as of Monday, August 23, 2010.

 

(b) The leading five players, not otherwise qualified (having selected the four players from The Ryder Cup World Points List) from The Ryder Cup European Points List (2) as of Sunday, August 29, 2010, or at the conclusion of the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles, whichever is the latter. In the event of a tie (equal number of points accumulated), placings will be decided by the player with the higher ranking on The 2010 Race to Dubai as of August 29, 2010, or at the conclusion of the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles, whichever is the latter.

 

 

© The Captain, Colin Montgomerie, will choose the remaining three players on Sunday August 29, 2010 following the conclusion of the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles.

 

 

(1) The Ryder Cup World Points List is comprised of World Ranking Points won by a European Tour Member from each tournament in which he participates between September 3, 2009 and August 22, 2010 and thereafter in the 2010 Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles. World Ranking Points are allocated to all officially sanctioned tournaments (on any Federated Tour) by the Official World Golf Ranking and are allocated according to the Event Rating of the tournament.

 

 

(2) The Ryder Cup European Points List is comprised of points (1 point = 1 Euro) earned by a European Tour Member from all officially sanctioned European Tour tournaments on The Race to Dubai between September 3, 2009 and August 29, 2010 or the conclusion of the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles, whichever is the latter.

Ryder Cup Match Format

 

Match Play

All games are played under Match Play rules, where the result of each game is determined by the number of holes won. The order of play for the first two days is Foursomes in the morning and Fourball in the afternoon. The final day's play will be in Singles format.

 

Fourball (four groups of two two-man teams)

"Fourball" play is a match in which each member of the two-man teams plays their own ball. Four balls are in play per hole with each of the four players competing. The team whose player has the lowest score on that hole wins the hole. Should players from each team tie for the best score, the hole is halved.

 

Foursomes (four groups of two two-man teams)

"Foursomes" play is a match where two golfers play together against two other golfers and each team plays one ball. The golfers play alternate shots (player A hits tee shot, player B hits second shot, etc) until the hole is played out. Team members alternate playing the tee shots, with one golfer hitting the tee shot on odd-numbered holes, and the other hitting the tee shot on the even-numbered holes. The team with the better score wins the hole. Should the two teams tie for best score, the hole is halved.

Singles (12 groups of two one-man teams)

"Singles" is a match in which one player competes against another player. A player wins the match when he is up by more holes than there are holes remaining to play.

 

Pairings

Each Team Captain independently submits the order of play for his Team to the appointed tournament official. The lists from each Captain are matched, resulting in the "Pairings". Please note that the players in pairings can be modified by the Team Captains only if a player is ill or injured. Pairings are subject to change and should not be considered final until play begins for a particular match.

Eu queria que ganhasse o Bubba. Mas arriscou do rough e calhou-lhe mal. O Kaymer jogou bem e pode ser, como os announcers fartaram-se de dizer, uma grande estrela, se trabalhar para isso.

Corey Pavin was in positive mood as he assessed his eight players who qualified for the US Ryder Cup Team bound for Wales in just over six weeks.

 

The US Team will have a blend of four experienced campaigners and four rookies, with Pavin making his four remaining wild card selections on September 7 as the US look to retain The Ryder Cup and win on European soil for the first time since 1993.

 

Phil Mickelson, Hunter Mahan, US PGA runner-up Bubba Watson, Jim Furyk, Steve Stricker, Dustin Johnson, Jeff Overton and Matt Kuchar all made the grade after qualifying concluded after the US PHA Championship at Whistling Straits. Watson, Johnson, Kuchar and Overton will be making their debuts.

 

Pavin doesn’t intend leaving any stone unturned in his preparations for The 2010 Ryder Cup, which begins on October 1 at The Celtic Manor Resort, City of Newport, Wales, and is intent of getting the right mix when considering his four picks.

 

“Chemistry is going to be a big part of it,” explained Pavin. “Obviously the way they are playing is going to be important. And those four guys that complement those eight is going to be a very key factor. As we sit around the next three weeks, and I talk to the assistant captains and I talk to the players, the eight players that have made the team, pairing is going to be a very interesting part of that, as well.

 

“For the most part, come September 7, pairings are going to be somewhat in order. We are not going to be to go over to Celtic Manor and these guys are not going to be wondering who they are possibly going to be playing with. They won't be set in stone or anything, but the guys will have a pretty good idea of who they are going to be playing with or might play with, and I think that's important for their preparation and for our preparation.

 

“All of those things are going to be factors in who the four picks are going to be and makeup the best team that the US can field there.”

 

Pavin also praised the way Dustin Johnson handled the two-shot penalty which cost him a chance of a first Major title.

 

And hew believes Johnson could be all the stronger for it when it comes to his Ryder Cup debut at Celtic Manor in October.

 

The 26 year old was one ahead with one to play in the US PGA Championship when his club touched sand in what was deemed a bunker before he hit his second shot.

 

After bogeying the hole and falling - he thought - into a play-off, Johnson was told he was being penalised and as a result dropped to fifth.

 

The debate is still going on about the harshness of the punishment for what Johnson did in "a piece of dirt" where the crowd had been walking, but the one saving grace was that he still climbed into an automatic qualifying spot for the match against Europe.

 

Pavin, still not saying that he will definitely include World Number One Tiger Woods amongst his four picks on September 12, said: "Obviously it was an unfortunate incident that happened.

 

"The ruling was what the ruling was - I think it was the proper ruling.

 

"The one thing that I will remember from this more than anything is the way Dustin handled himself. He was very mature - I couldn't imagine a player handling it any better than he did."

 

Johnson also blew the US Open with a closing 82, but when asked if Johnson's morale would need a boost when the team gathers, Pavin replied: "I don't think there's anything that needs to be raised.

 

"If anything, I'll probably have to calm him down for The Ryder Cup. I think what I've watched in Dustin this year, to have what happened to him at the US Open, is very hard as a player.

 

"But you can just see how much he's learned from there, from the British Open (Johnson fell off the leaderboard by going out of bounds at the last) to the PGA Championship.

 

"It's important as a golfer to grow and to learn how to handle pressure. I've seen a tremendous amount of growth in him this year in that regard.

 

"He's a young guy and he's learning very quickly. I like to see that."

 

On Woods, who failed to make the top eight, Pavin commented when asked the pros and cons of selecting him: "He's the Number One player in the world - that's a pretty good pro.

 

"Obviously I'm considering him highly, no doubt about it. He's playing better. I think we have all seen that and he wants to play, he wants to be a part of the team.

 

"But it's going to be my judgment whether I pick him or not.

 

"I don't think there's any cons."

The majors originally consisted of the Open Championship, the British Amateur or The Amateur Championship, the U.S. Open, and the U.S. Amateur. With the introduction of the Masters Tournament in 1934, and the rise of professional golf in the late 1940s and 1950s, the term "major championships" eventually came to describe the Masters, the U.S. Open, the Open Championship, and the (U.S.) PGA Championship. It is difficult to determine when the definition changed to include the current four tournaments, although many trace it to Arnold Palmer's 1960 season, when after winning the Masters and the U.S. Open to start the season he remarked that if he could win the Open Championship and PGA Championship to finish the season, he would complete "a grand slam of his own" to rival Bobby Jones's 1930 feat. Until that time, many U.S. players also considered the Western Open as one of golf's "majors", and the British PGA Matchplay Championship was as important to British and Commonwealth professionals as the PGA Championship was to Americans. During the 1950s, the short-lived World Championship of Golf was certainly viewed as a "major" by its competitors, as its first prize was worth almost ten times any other event in the game, and it was the first event whose finale was televised live on U.S. television.

 

The oldest of the majors is The Open Championship, which is usually referred to as the "British Open" outside the United Kingdom. Dominated by American champions in the 1920s and 1930s, the comparative explosion in the riches available on the U.S. Tour from the 1940s onwards meant that the lengthy overseas trip needed to compete in the event became increasingly prohibitive for the leading American professionals and their regular participation dwindled after the war years (Ben Hogan, for example, entered just once after the war, winning in 1953). However, in 1960, Arnold Palmer entered in an attempt to emulate Hogan's 1953 feat of winning on his first visit, and although unsuccessful, began competing regularly thereafter, restoring the event's prestige (and with it the prize money that once again made it an attractive prospect to other American pros). The advent of transatlantic jet travel in that period also helped to boost American participation in The Open. A discussion between Palmer and Pittsburgh golf writer Bob Drum led to the concept of the modern Grand Slam of Golf.[1]
