Mister Master Publicado 14 Janeiro 2013 20 Years of Raw: 20 Highlights and 20 Lowlights, 1993-2002 The flagship show of “sports entertainment,” Monday Night Raw, celebrates its 20th anniversary tonight. During its two decades, Raw has become a pop-culture institution and forever changed the way televised wrestling is done. To help you bask in the nostalgia, here’s a year-by-year tally of highlights and lowlights of Monday Night Raw. Of course, it’s a subjective list, so be sure to share your own highlights and lowlights in the comments section. Happy 20th Anniversary, Raw! 1993 Highlight: Raw debuts in New York’s Manhattan Center, effectively launching the modern era of “sports entertainment.” It was a different kind of venue for a different kind of show, promising “uncut, uncooked, uncensored” action. Although it was substantially different from the slickly produced, three-hour arena shows we now see every Monday, it set the tone for wrestling’s premier television program. Lowlight: Raw debuts in New York’s Manhattan Center, with matches featuring Damien Demento and Max Moon, with insufferable commentary by Ramblin’ Rob Bartlett. Although the concept of Raw was innovative and exciting, there were unpleasant growing pains in the early goings. 1994 Highlight: Shawn Michaels vs. Razor Ramon, Aug. 1, 1994. A few months after their classic ladder match at WrestleMania X, these longtime friends/rivals collided in a singles match on Raw. The match went roughly 20 minutes, and featured both men in top form, with Michaels taking the win with an assist from “bodyguard” Diesel. Good times. Lowlight: WWE has allowed some pretty pathetic “talent” provide commentary over the years, but Bastion Booger was scraping the bottom of the barrel. Then again, even the smelly, overweight and inarticulate Booger was better than Raw’s original color commentary man, Rob Bartlett. 1995: Highlight: Owen Hart puts Shawn Michaels “on the shelf” with a wicked-looking enzuigiri to the back of HBK’s head (right where the mullet used to be). As the match wore on, Michael’s looked dizzy and eventually collapsed, apparently due to a concussion. Although it was all part of the show, both Hart and Michaels pulled it off beautifully, and left many fans wondering whether they had witnessed a serious, career-threatening injury. Lowlight: 1995 is widely regarded as being one of the worst in WWE history. Of course, this is entirely subjective, based on personal preferences and frames of reference. But it’s hard to argue that Raw had many matches that were sillier or more embarrassingly corny than Mantaur vs. Bob Spark Plugg Holly. Perhaps the introduction of The Goon was even worse? 1996 Highlight: Pillman’s got a gun! Shortly after signing on with WWF, “The Loose Cannon” Brian Pillman turned on his former friend and tag partner Steve Austin. After weeks of trash talk, Austin sought some vigilante justice by raiding Pillman’s home in Walton, Kentucky. Pillman, defending himself and his family, pulled a 9mm handgun and pointed it at Austin before the live feed was cut. It was trashy and in poor taste, and WWF eventually apologized for the whole thing, but it was must-watch TV. God bless ‘Murica. Lowlight: Fake Razor Ramon and Fake Diesel arrive on the scene. Although it was intended to mock the departed Scott Hall and Kevin Nash, who were about to make huge waves and draw big money in WCW, the introduction of imposters merely made WWF look ridiculous. 1997 Highlight: “Bret Screwed Bret.” The infamous interview during which Vince McMahon – with a fresh, purple shiner around his eye – insists that the so-called Montreal Screwjob was self-inflicted by Bret Hart. It helped solidify McMahon’s emergence as one of the greatest heels in wrestling history. Lowlight: For a brief period in 1997, the Headbangers were repackaged as The Flying Nuns, Sister Angelica and Mother Smucker, and were billed as being from a Himalayan monastery. The gimmick was mercifully short-lived, but surely managed to offend some people and merely confuse everyone else. 1998 Highlight: Steve Austin and Mike Tyson come to blows in the Raw ring, while a furious Vince McMahon practically has a coronary. Or perhaps it was when Steve Austin clobbered McMahon over the head with a bedpan at the hospital? 1998 was arguably the greatest year in Raw history, thanks in large part to the hugely entertaining feud between Austin and McMahon. Lowlight: At the height – or perhaps depths – of the Attitude Era, the supposed former porn star Val Venis feuded with a gang of hackneyed Asian stereotypes called Kaientai. Venis slept with the wife of Kaientai manager Yamaguchi-San. Kaientai vowed vicious revenge by cleaving a girthy salami in half and screaming “I choppy choppy your pee pee!” The feud even featured a cameo by John Wayne Bobbitt, who famously had his own “pee pee” chopped off by his estranged wife. Stay classy, Fed. 1999: Highlight: Mick Foley beats The Rock to win the WWF Championship – a poignant and powerful moment, particularly because it marked a turning point in the long-running Monday Night Wars with WCW (and the night WCW Tony Shiavone made the regrettable, sarcastic quip that Foley’s victory would “put asses in seats,” which is exactly what it did). Lowlight: Mark Henry kisses a transvestite named Sammy. Henry was the victim of a prank orchestrated by Chyna, but he only discovered the truth when, while making out with Sammy, he noticed that “she” had a penis. In horror, Henry waddled hurriedly to the bathroom, where he vomited uncontrollably. “Nuff said. 2000 Highlight: The Radicalz – a disgruntled crew of former WCW undercard wrestlers – appeared on Raw as audience members in January 2000. Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, Perry Saturn and Dean Malenko (three of the best in-ring performers ever…and Saturn) interfered in a match, thus beginning their WWF/E tenures, where they showed the world the remarkable talents that were largely underutilized in WCW. Lowlight: Mae Young, supposedly impregnated by Mark Henry, gave birth to a prosthetic hand. The less said about this one the better, as it’s one of the all-time worst ideas in the history of WWE – and perhaps in the history of television. 2001: Highlight: Following the intensity of the Monday Night Wars, WWE turned a business acquisition into a shocking storyline when it was revealed that Shane McMahon – the heir-apparent to the WWE throne – had bought his father’s fiercest competitor. Shane’s appearance via satellite from WCW Nitro to announce the coup was one of the most compelling moments in Raw’s history. Lowlight: See highlight. Although WWE’s purchase of WCW made for shocking and fascinating television, it also eliminated WWE’s sole source of real competition. Without a rival against which to compete for survival, WWE eventually began to slip into complacency. The end of the Monday Night Wars was, in many ways, the end of wrestling’s most exciting and unpredictable era. 2002: Highlight: Vince McMahon and Eric Bischoff hug it out like brothers from another mother. In one of the most surreal moments in wrestling history, the two bitter rivals of the Monday Night Wars embraced one another in front of the world. Somewhere, a pig flew. Lowlight: The Katie Vick angle. It’s not worth explaining all the details here. Those who saw it will never forget it; those who missed it should be glad they did. In a nutshell, this was WWE’s attempt at necrophilia humor. Triple H dry-humped a mannequin in a casket. Just awful. Compartilhar este post Link para o post

Poeira Publicado 17 Janeiro 2013 Isso existe?
