[Aston Villa have asked about a loan for Atletico Madrid winger Cristain Rodriguez, also the subject of interest from Crystal Palace and Sunderland.

Prefiro o Cebola ao Sinclair. Se tiver uma opção de compra por um valor acessível, melhor ainda. Contratar o Sinclair seria investir numa incógnita de £3,5M-£4M e cruzaríamos os dedos à espera que não se lesionasse.

Aston Villa: Azerbaijan bid rumours and Andy Gray trying to get oil-rich sheikhs to buy Villa

The club was put up for sale by Randy Lerner last year and sports broadcaster and Aston Villa season ticket holder Jonny Gould claims there is interest from the oil and gas-rich eastern European country

Aston Villa are rumoured to be at the centre of a mystery takeover bid from Azerbaijan.

The club was put up for sale by Randy Lerner last year and sports broadcaster and Villa season ticket holder Jonny Gould claims there is interest from the oil and gas-rich eastern European country.

In an interview with former Villa star Andy Gray, Gould claims a company called Gilan Holdings was involved in a possible bid.

It is not the first rumour of a takeover at Villa, with American billionaire Mark Cuban linked with the club last month.

Meanwhile, Gray, now working as broadcaster in World Cup 2022 hosts Qatar, tells Gould he has been trying to find a buyer for Villa in the Middle East - with little success.

“I’ve been very anxious to see this thing brought to a settlement,” Gray said. “Randy’s lost his interest, there’s no doubt about that.

“His lost his passion, he’s lost his interest, he’s lost his drive. That’s fine, I understand that. But it’s in limbo the club and it needs to be sold.

“But try as I might to maybe encourage one of the sheikhs to invest his multi millions in Aston Villa, I find it difficult.

“And what I also find difficult is Villa seems not to be an attractive proposition. I don’t get it. When I look around Villa Park I see a magnificent stadium.

“When I look at the training ground I see a fantastic training ground. It’s not like you’re buying a club where you’re going to have to build these things. You’re not.

“I’m amazed how little interest has been shown in Villa. I don’t know whether the reputation of Villa has dropped over the years and it’s not as attractive? But you and I know the size and potential of this club.

I’m not saying they could be Manchester City or Chelsea, but they could be Tottenham or Everton and these are teams that have been battling for fourth, fifth and sixth for the last seven, eight, nine, 10 years.”

If Aston Villa need a director of football then Big Ron is the man to do it!

Andy Gray says former boss Ron Atkinson is the man amid rumours that Villa are asking a head-hunting firm to recruit a football man to the boardroom

If Aston Villa need a director of football then Big Ron is the man to do it.

That’s the verdict of former Villa striker Andy Gray, who was responding to rumours that Villa are asking a head-hunting firm to recruit a football man to the boardroom.

Gray was being interviewed by broadcaster and Villa season ticket holder Jonny Gould, who claims the club are interested in adding an extra executive to the team.

But Gray has dismissed the idea of bringing in consultants to try to find the right man.

“Let’s say I’m Aston Villa and I want someone who knows the game, has an affinity with Villa, and knows about players. Let me think - Ron Atkinson,” Gray said.

“People might think, ‘Don’t be so stupid, Andy’ - I’m just saying that’s right off the top of your head. A man who has 50 years in the game, has huge knowledge of the game, has amazing passion for the game, loves Aston Villa, loved his time there, and knows players.

“Whether it’s in England or abroad. You would rather go to a headhunting company and let them decide who would be a good director of football for you? I don’t get that. It’s a bad mistake for me.

“Get somebody who knows Villa, who knows football, knows the history of Villa, who knows what players Villa might need and go in there and get him to help whether it’s Paul now, or whoever, to help turn the club around.

“To go and headhunt somebody from a company and say ‘Right, who do you think....’ and what are they going to give him, some French guy, some Italian, some Spanish guy just because they have a good CV. No, I’m sorry, it doesn’t work for me."
