Depth takes another hit as Lopez withdraws from U.S. team

Posted Aug 4 2010 1:32PM

NEW YORK (AP) -- New Jersey center Brook Lopez, struggling to recover from a bout with mono, has withdrawn from the U.S. national team and will be replaced by Washington's JaVale McGee.

Lopez informed USA Basketball officials Wednesday that he didn't believe he was in good enough condition to take part in training camp next week in New York.

He played poorly during practices in Las Vegas last month and USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo said he would have to perform well during the second training session to have a chance to make the roster headed to Turkey for the world championships.

Instead, Lopez became the latest big man on an undersized U.S. roster to withdraw. The Americans lost Amare Stoudemire, David Lee and Robin Lopez, Brook's brother, shortly after opening camp in Las Vegas. They were already without Boston's Kendrick Perkins, who injured his knee in Game 6 of the NBA finals.

Tyson Chandler and McGee are the only centers on the roster. McGee had practiced in Las Vegas with the Americans the last two summers, but hadn't officially been added to the national team.

Beno Udrih & Sasha Vujacic

Beno, Beno…. it wasn’t too much of a suprise when the news broke about him leaving the team. As a basketball player he has improved every year, but the same cannot be said about his attitude. A lot of you probably don’t know this, but his “poor relationship” with the national team goes back to 2003, when he decided not to play for the team in European Championship in Sweden because he was insulted with the treatment he received from “then national coach”. Justification was injuries, and “injuries” were also the reason for not playing in 2005 (EC Belgrade), 2007 ( because he was changing his NBA team) and last year (EC Poland) where he again “injured” his knee during one of the last preparation games.

Those past issues are related and this year he finally said so. After one week of preparation he said that he has had it. He did not agree with the role coach has given him (and in the past) and he basically said that, given the player he is, he deserves a bigger role.

There was some discussion in Slovenia after his cancelation: everybody agreed that the way he expressed his frustration and his unwilligness to be a team player can result only in him leaving the team. But the main argument was: Jaka Lakovic was given the role of a team captain and 1st point guard 6 months before the WC in Turkey. Before any national team practice and preparation games. While Jaka is a good player, Beno is probably a better point guard. Jaka’s seniority with the team and his willingness to be a team player are the reason he got “the job” in advance.

Not sure what you mean that the same thing happened to Vujacic. From what i’ve read, Vujacic is an ego maniac. Last year, when he was cut from the team (offical reason was injury i think), he was cut because he played prima-dona from the first day in camp. He demanded extra rooms for his entourage (one or two friends), declined to participate in conditioning drills saying they were too demanding and turned off a lot of players with his attitude. Everybody on the team were in agreement that he had to go. After he was cut, his ego couldn’t take it, and then started talking nonsense in the media as to why he left.

Sure, the majority of players are honored to represent the national team, but there are always couple of players who feel like they are doing “us” a favour playing for the national team.

PHOENIX - The Phoenix Suns have named former player and veteran NBA executive Lance Blanks the club's general manager, the team announced today.

"After a thorough search, we believe we have found the perfect choice to serve as our general manager," said Suns President of Basketball Operations Lon Babby. "Lance Blanks is a first-rate talent evaluator, basketball executive and person. We are thrilled that he will be joining the Phoenix Suns."

An experienced and successful talent evaluator, Blanks combines the high basketball IQ of a former player with a 10-year track record in the front offices of two of the league's most successful franchises over the last decade. The 43-year-old Blanks joins the Suns after spending the last five seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers as vice president of basketball operations and assistant general manager, a tenure during which the Cavs owned an overall record of 272-138 (.663).

Prior to joining the Cavaliers in 2005, Blanks spent the previous five seasons with the San Antonio Spurs, originally joining the club in 2000 as a scout. Blanks was then promoted to the role of director of scouting in September 2002. During his time in the Alamo City, the Spurs won two NBA Championships and drafted Tony Parker and Luis Scola.

Selected in the first round of the 1990 NBA Draft (26th overall) by the Detroit Pistons, Blanks spent two seasons with the Pistons and one with the Minnesota Timberwolves, appearing in 142 career NBA games. He played one season in the CBA and three in Europe where he led teams in Hungary and Cyprus to league championships. A former Texas "Mr. Basketball" as a high school standout in 1985, Blanks attended the University of Texas and led the Longhorns to the Elite Eight in the 1990 NCAA Tournament. Blanks' 20.0-point collegiate scoring average ranks third-highest in Longhorn history.

Currently in Senegal with the NBA's Basketball Without Borders, Blanks has been active in the program, which encourages positive social change in education, health and wellness through basketball, since its inception in 2003. He also serves on the steering committee for the Ron Brown Scholar Program, established in 1996 to provide academic scholarships, service opportunities and leadership experiences to young scholars of outstanding promise.

Blanks has two daughters, Riley and Bryn. His father, Sid, played eight NFL seasons with Houston, Washington and New England; his cousin, Larvel, played eight seasons of MLB baseball.
