Jimmy Butler stays hot, but Derrick Rose can't play in second half of loss

 

Jimmy Butler refuses to refer to himself as a star, but his coach begs to differ.

 

"He has been incredible," Tom Thibodeau said. "He's a star. And he does it on both ends of the floor. He's an amazing player. We've had him play the point, we've had him play the 2 (shooting guard), the 3 (small forward) and tonight he played the 4 (power forward). And he hasn't had any time to practice the 4. He's smart, he's tough. He does whatever the team needs. He found a way to help lead us into coming back and having a shot at the end."

 

Butler's 32 points were not enough to prevent the Bulls from losing their eighth straight game in Denver as the Nuggets prevailed 114-109 at the Pepsi Center.

 

Thibodeau announced before Tuesday night's game that center Joakim Noah would be out with a left eye abrasion and a left knee effusion. Then the team announced before the third quarter that Derrick Rose would sit out the second half because of left hamstring tightness. He had missed four games because of that before playing Monday night.

 

"Just trying to be smart, back-to-back (games), fatigue, and didn't want to take any steps back," said Rose, who scored two points. "So, take these couple of days off, head to Boston."

 

But Butler continues to play like a star.

 

"I'm not a star. I'm a good role player on a really, really good team. A really, really deep team," Butler said. "I like being a role player. Star is not … never has been next to Jimmy Butler's name. It never will be. I will always just be an under-the-radar dog."

 

Thibodeau clearly is sick of talking about the plethora of injuries that have beset his team. While he is not exactly Mr. Sunshine, Thibodeau is more pleased to focus on the performances of players such as Butler, who have benefited from the extra playing time.

 

"Pau (Gasol) is doing a great job, as well," Thibodeau said. "I don't want that to get lost in what's happening."

 

Rose gave it a shot for the back-to-back competition, but looked fairly tentative in the first half. Even veteran guard Kirk Hinrich was ready to go after missing two games with a chest contusion. He looked rusty but finished with 10 points in 31 minutes.

 

Butler, who scored 17 first-half points, has been running on fumes after racking up serious minutes on the court for the Bulls. But the third-year guard isn't complaining, and neither are his teammates.

 

"Jimmy is very aggressive. He is a player who is having an excellent season," Gasol said. "I didn't know him personally before (joining the Bulls as a free agent). But he has definitely gone to another level. And I am very proud of what he is doing, how he is playing, how aggressive and effective he has been on both ends of the floor. Now he has to sustain it.

 

"He is playing a lot of minutes, and with the schedule that we have, it is not going to be easy to sustain. Hopefully we will do well and we will be able to give him a little more rest during games."

 

Butler, who entered Tuesday night averaging 39.2 minutes per game, said he has appreciated the opportunity to play more because of injuries to several veterans.

 

"How can you not?" Butler said. "Growing up, this is what you want to do, play in the NBA, let alone play a lot of minutes. So, tired or not, I have to produce and help this team win."

 

Butler helped the Bulls edge the Jazz on Monday night, 97-95, with 25 points, four steals and non-stop defense on Gordon Hayward, who missed a last-second 3-point try.

 

Butler, who was raring to go again Tuesday night with a 20.8 scoring average, is learning that the ultimate compliment for a visiting team's player is to be booed lustily, as Noah has been throughout the league.

 

"A lot of teams boo him, and I think, 'What would Jo do?' And Jo would just block it out, smile and make some shots," Butler said.
