Knicks' Mobley retires due to worsening heart disease

 

New York Knicks guard Cuttino Mobley retired from the NBA on Thursday because of a heart disease that he said has gotten worse.

 

Mobley said doctors told him he faced significant risks if he kept playing. The 11-year veteran said by walking away now, he could live a normal life.

 

Mobley announced his decision at a press conference at the Knicks' training center, where he confirmed he has hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and said he had no choice but to end his career.

 

"The specialists I've seen made it clear that my heart condition has gotten worse and I couldn't continue to play professional basketball without putting my health and life in serious danger," Mobley said. "As much as I want to keep playing in the NBA, I have no choice but to follow the advice of my doctors and step away from the league."

 

The Knicks acquired Mobley last month from the Los Angeles Clippers. He never played for the Knicks after his physical exam and subsequent visits with specialists showed his condition was worse than previously thought.

 

"The doctors said to not chance it and I feel as though they're right, having an 8-year old son, having a long life ahead of me, it's the smart thing," Mobley said. "It's a tough thing to swallow, but things in life happen, but you have to keep going."

For a few moments this week, I had been toying with moving Wade into the top spot, but LeBron had a good late-push this week. That, and it just didn't feel right yet. Yet. The Heat have only played two games since the last R2MVP, but Wade tallied 38 in the first and 41 in the second. Also, look at that field goal percentage: .499. O Wade não é o 1º pela mesma razão que o LeBron não foi MVP o ano passado. Record da equipa. Já para não falar que numa equipa superior e a jogar menos 2 minutos, o LeBron tem stats quase idênticas às do Wade.

Em termos de stats a diferença ainda é considerável, em certos aspectos. E tendo em conta a estatura de ambos, o número de blocks do Wade torna-se ainda mais impressionante, por exemplo. Essa diferença de 2 minutos pouca influência tem na diferença das médias.

 

E sim, o motivo pelo qual o Wade não está em 1º é precisamente esse, o record da equipa. Mas mesmo assim, ainda que continuando 6 ou 7 vitórias abaixo dos Cavs, não duvido muito que ele acabe por ascender ao topo, com estas exibições e números que tem vindo a efectuar.

76ers fire Maurice Cheeks; Tony DiLeo named interim coach

 

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Maurice Cheeks was fired Saturday as coach of the Philadelphia 76ers, who are slumping at 9-14 a year after making the playoffs. Assistant general manager Tony DiLeo was appointed interim coach.

 

The moves were confirmed by a person familiar with the decision who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because an announcement had not been made. The team scheduled an afternoon news conference with general manager Ed Stefanski

Cheeks was one of more the popular players in 76ers history and was starting his fourth season as coach. Stefanski had given Cheeks two contract extensions in the past season, but the slow start was enough to cost him his job.

 

The dismissal came hours before the 76ers were to play at home Saturday night, with DiLeo now making his coaching debut against Washington. DiLeo has spent 19 seasons with the 76ers. He was promoted to senior vice president/assistant general manager in 2003.

 

Cheeks became the fifth NBA coach fired this season following P.J. Carlesimo (Oklahoma City), Eddie Jordan (Washington), Sam Mitchell (Toronto) and Randy Wittman (Minnesota)..

 

Cheeks led the 76ers to the playoffs last year for the first time while he was coach. Philadelphia was one of the surprise teams in the East last season, and the 76ers anticipated a deep run in the playoffs this year.

 

They signed Elton Brand to a five-year deal worth nearly $80 million last summer, but they have struggled with him in the lineup and have lost eight of 10.

 

Last season, the 76ers lost in the first round to Detroit. After an 18-30 start, Philadelphia won 18 of its next 23 games and wound up at 40-42, the sixth seed in the Eastern Conference.

 

Stefanski rewarded Cheeks with two contract extensions in seven months that would have taken him to the end of next season. Instead, with the team on a three-game losing streak and last in the Atlantic Division, he didn't even last until the end of the calendar year.

 

Cheeks also coached at Portland. He played 15 seasons in the NBA, the first 11 with Philadelphia, and retired in 1993. An outstanding defensive player, Cheeks played in four All-Star games and was a member of the 76ers' championship team in 1982-83. His No. 10 jersey hangs in the rafters.
