Australian Open first Grand Slam event with three retractable roof stadiums

THE Australian Open will next month become the first Grand Slam event to boast three stadiums with retractable roofs - but one can't be closed.

Tennis Australia chief executive Craig Tiley gave the Herald Sun a tour of the updated Margaret Court Arena, part of Melbourne Park's $366 million redevelopment. It includes a new bronze-topped roof that will close in less than 10 minutes.

But it will be no help in the case of rain during the 2014 tournament, with construction not due for completion until October next year - ready for 2015's event.

Mr Tiley said while the two-year project was ahead of schedule, the roof was always going to be "fixed in an open position" this January. He said the present redevelopment would put the Australian Open's facilities well ahead of those at Wimbledon and the US and French Opens. "No one can match it, for now, anyway," Mr Tiley said.

The new roof adds to the retractable covers on Rod Laver Arena and Hisense Arena. The redevelopment also includes the new National Tennis Centre, which has eight indoor courts and 13 outdoor courts.

Andy Murray can challenge at the Australian Open - John McEnroe

Andy Murray can be competitive immediately at next month's Australian Open if he has fully recovered from back surgery, says John McEnroe. The Briton had surgery in September and has not played competitively since.

"If he's healthy, he is going to be one of the guys who can go the distance [in Australia]," said seven-time Grand Slam champion McEnroe. But Tim Henman said Murray must "remain patient" and not rush his comeback if he wants to be a force in 2014. Murray's lingering back problem forced him to miss the French Open in May, but he recovered to become the first Briton to win the Wimbledon men's singles title since Fred Perry in 1936.

In September, his defence of his US Open title ended in the quarter-finals, but he went on to enjoy success with his GB Davis Cup team-mates, who secured their place in the 2014 World Group. Murray, 26, then underwent surgery and missed the recent ATP World Tour Finals in London as he recovered. McEnroe believes the break from the sport could have helped Murray, just like it did Rafael Nadal, who took seven months out before returning in February to win 10 titles, including two Grand Slams.

"It's going to be unpredictable when you haven't hasn't played," added McEnroe, who is playing in the Masters at the Royal Albert Hall this week. "But you could make the argument that it could help him. I think mentally, he was a little whipped at the [uS] Open, he needed to regroup - it had been an incredible but crazy 12 months for him. Now he's had a chance to hopefully get things right with his back. And if that's not right, it's going to be tough. Maybe he's going to have to think longer term, but hopefully he'll come out firing the way Nadal did."

Former British number one Henman believes Murray, who returned to practice after his operation late last month, must make a full recovery after surgery his priority.

"I think it's most important for him to remain patient," he said. "To have any sort of surgery is invasive and there are always a few unknowns. He's got to make sure that when he does come back, he's 100% fit and healthy and ready to compete to try and win the biggest and best tournaments because that's what his level is and that's what his career is about. From what I hear in Miami, with the training he's been doing, things have been progressing well. He's still got another three or four weeks of practice. Fingers crossed he'll be ready to compete in Australia."

But Henman believes it may not be so bad if he missed the Australian Open, as Nadal did this year before going on his impressive run which saw him end the season as world number one.

"It's important to reflect on what Nadal did," said Henman. "He had seven months out, which is a lot longer than Andy, and he didn't have surgery. He decided he wasn't ready for Australia, he didn't play. He took that bit of extra time and you could see the benefits of that at the end of this year."

Nick Kyrgios withdraws from Australian Open playoff

Rising star Nick Kyrgios has made a late withdrawal from the Australian Open play-offs, which are to begin on Monday at Melbourne Park. The 18-year-old cited the recurrence of an elbow injury.

Kyrgios won the Australian Open boys' singles tournament in January. On Monday night he was named the male junior athlete of the year at the Newcombe Medal awards night.

He said he was disappointed to withdraw from the play-offs. ''Looking ahead to the summer and what I want to achieve, I know it's the right decision to withdraw from the play-offs and make sure I'm 100 per cent fit for the coming months.''

Kyrgios' coach Simon Rea said the decision was based on medical advice.

''As Nick's training loads have progressively increased over the last 10 days to two weeks, he has had a recurrence of some of the minor elbow irritation that forced his early return from the USA in October,'' he said.

Kyrgios is replaced in the men's field by 17-year-old Blake Mott.

There are 16 in the men's field.

Roger Federer believes he can win Australian Open 2014

17-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer has set his eyes upon winning the 18th major title of his career

Former World No.1 Roger Federer has had a huge dip in his form, which has propelled his rankings for a downfall. However, the Swiss ace believes that he can make merry at the upcoming Australian Open 2014.

"I've always believed that I've improved over the last 10 years, that I've not gone backwards," Federer was quoted as per saying by Wide World of Sports. "I've been able to win it 10 years ago so I always feel that, as I move forward, I am a more complete player, a better player.

"That's why I always believe that I can win if my body's holding up and mentally I'm really hungry travelling the world and playing matches. And that is the case right now. I'm really healthy, I'm training extremely hard the last six weeks and I had some success coming back at the end of year.

"That was quite important for me and for my confidence because I was really in a difficult spot from Wimbledon all the way till Basel, I'd say, with just finding my confidence. Moving along on to Melbourne, I really hope to be playing my absolute best, which I really think is possible.

"Then anything is possible for me. I really believe that. It's just important that I play better against the top guys. I've not been bad this year. I just didn't land enough wins and that's something I want to improve for this year."

2014 Australian Open Live Music Lineup Announced

Michael and Matt Gudinski‘s Mushroom have gotten together with the 2014 Australian Open to make the upcoming Grand Slam something special for music and sports fans, offering up an eclectic roster of artists for the Heineken Live Stage, including The Preatures, The Rubens, and more.

The lineup has been curated by the Mushroom Group and features headlining sets from The Rubens and Clare Bowditch on the nights of the men’s and women’s finals respectively. The rest of the bill is populated by incredible local talent such as British India, Snakadaktal, and Stonefield.

There will also be performances by Australian music legends Daryl Braithwaite and Jon Stevens, as well as a special set from BBC Radio 1′s equally legendary EDM maestro Pete Tong, with performances taking place from 6-7PM each day and open to all Australian Open spectators.

“Mushroom is thrilled to be involved with the Australian Open. As Melburnians it’s exciting for us to see the best of music and sport combined – two things we love. We’re especially proud to see the inclusion of so many great emerging bands,” said the Mushroom Group’s Matt Gudinski.

Meanwhile The Rubens have said, “We can’t believe we’re playing on men’s final night at the Australian Open, and on Australia Day no less! We are all big tennis fans, so it’s most certainly a special gig for us. And we have our fingers crossed for an Aussie in the final too.”
