  4. Radnički Obrenovac: The Rise of Diogo Van Sant and Serbia’s Surprise Package By Marko Petrović | May 2024 | Obrenovac When the summer of 2023 arrived, few in Serbian football circles were talking about Radnički Obrenovac. The club had been drifting in the lower leagues, its facilities modest, its reputation local at best. In real life, Radnički had finished 17th in the Second League Belgrade the previous season, a campaign marked by inconsistency and dwindling crowds. Expectations were low, survival was the goal, and the idea of promotion seemed fanciful. Into this environment stepped Diogo Van Sant, a manager with no coaching badges, no Serbian pedigree, and no reputation beyond whispers. His appointment was met with skepticism. Yet within weeks, the tone around Obrenovac began to change. Van Sant’s first task was recruitment. He knew the squad he inherited could not sustain a serious campaign. With no budget, he turned to the free agent market, gradually adding reinforcements. Contrary to early rumors, Lazar Marković never joined Radnički; his name appeared in transfer dealings, but he was not part of Van Sant’s squad. This detail matters, because the rise of Radnički was not built on marquee names, but on journeymen and overlooked talents who found new life under Van Sant. Preseason offered the first glimpse of what was to come. Radnički tore through friendlies with swagger. The goals flowed freely, the defense looked organized, and the team played with intensity. At the heart of it all was Filip Đorđević, a striker who had never been considered a star. Under Van Sant, he became a predator, scoring in nearly every match, often within the first five minutes. “Filip is our heartbeat,” Van Sant told reporters. “He sets the tempo.” Alongside him, Nikola Janković emerged as the man for late goals, sealing victories in stoppage time with uncanny regularity. The tactical setup was clear: a 4‑2‑3‑1 wide formation, emphasizing high pressing, fast transitions, and positional discipline. It was not revolutionary, but it was perfectly suited to the squad’s strengths. The league campaign began in August, and Radnički exploded out of the blocks. Every match felt like déjà vu: Đorđević struck early, Janković sealed it late, and the defense held firm. Crowds swelled. The town buzzed with pride. “We haven’t seen this in years,” said one supporter. “Van Sant has given us back our club.” By October, Radnički were in the top half of the table, beaten but feared. The board, initially cautious, began to dream... December brought a pause, but Radnički used it to sharpen their blade. More importantly, new names began to shine. Nikola Nedeljković became a box‑to‑box dynamo, scoring and assisting with equal ease. Kristijan Bjelanović added goals from midfield, often in clutch moments. Luka Dragojević brought creativity and bite, linking play between midfield and attack. Uroš Damjanović grew into a midfield general, dictating tempo and breaking up opposition attacks. The squad was no longer reliant solely on Đorđević and Janković. Depth had arrived, and with it, resilience. By April, the league table was tight. Brodarac, Zvezdara, and Radnički BG were all in contention. Radnički Obrenovac sat in the top three, fighting for promotion. Every match became a final, and Van Sant’s men showed no signs of cracking under pressure. Đorđević finished the season with over 30 goals in all competitions, cementing his status as the league’s deadliest striker. Nedeljković added double digits in goals and assists, while Bjelanović and Dragojević chipped in with crucial contributions. The defense, led by Rodić and Gajić, remained one of the stingiest in the league. Off the pitch, Radnički made strategic moves. The club signed a national partnership with first division mid table Željezničar, opening doors for player loans and friendlies. It was a sign of ambition, a club looking beyond the league, beyond Serbia, toward a future in bigger competitions. Van Sant, still without formal coaching badges, became a cult figure in Obrenovac. His pragmatic style, tactical clarity, and emotional intelligence turned a patchwork squad into a winning machine. He kept the squad grounded, rotated smartly, and maintained morale. “We don’t have stars,” he said. “We have a team.” The board, initially cautious, now spoke openly of long‑term plans. The fans, once skeptical, now packed the stadium week after week. Van Sant had given Obrenovac its pride back. Whether Radnički clinched promotion or narrowly missed out, the season was a triumph. From tactical masterclasses to transfer coups, from fan engagement to squad development, Van Sant’s first year was a blueprint for modern management. The club’s value rose, the average attendance soared, and the squad gelled into a unit that could challenge anyone. In a league full of sleeping giants and forgotten names, Radnički Obrenovac became the story. Not because they had the biggest budget or the flashiest players, but because they had belief, identity, and a manager who turned potential into performance. As the curtain falls on the 2023–24 season, one thing is clear: Radnički are no longer just a name in the Serbian third tier. They are a team with momentum, ambition, and a future worth watching. And if this was just the beginning, Serbia better brace itself for what comes next.
