Completamente.

Boozer Says Miami Rumors Are Just Talk

Jun 29, 2008 10:06 AM EST

Utah forward Carlos Boozer says that rumors involving him and the Miami Heat are just talk, according to The Deseret News.

Next season Boozer can opt out of the final year of his current contract with the Jazz and negotiate a potential six-year deal worth an estimated to $136 million.

Boozer responded teasingly to talk about the Heat, "I live in Miami — I'm going there no matter what I do; that's home for me. That's just talk — I've been talked about in rumors my whole career."

Indy Will Buyout Tinsley If They Can't Deal Him?

Jun 29, 2008 10:14 AM EST

The Pacers have reportedly made the decision to buyout the contract of point guard Jamaal Tinsley if they aren't able to trade him, according to The New York Daily News.

Tinsley has three years and more than $21 million left on his contract.

Larry Bird and David Morway are rumored to have made the decision to buy out Tinsley well before dealing for point guards T.J. Ford and Jarrett Jack.

Heat May Join Mavs in Diop Bidding

The Nets have said all along they want to keep DeSagana Diop and they can offer him more than any other team over the cap. But Diop has said he’ll seriously consider returning to Dallas and the Mavs may be willing to part with their full MLE to get him. Now, there’s word the Heat may join in the bidding, which starts Tuesday. The Nets have four seven-footers and five others at 6′-10″ on the roster.

Jefferson Not Happy With Trade To Bucks?

Jun 30, 2008 5:23 AM EST

Richard Jefferson is not happy with the draft day trade which sent him to the Milwaukee Bucks in exchange for Yi Jianlian and Bobby Simmons, the New York Post is reporting.

Jefferson communicated with Nets team president Rod Thorn via text message, and the two have not yet spoken.

"He didn't seem very happy," said Thorn. "I spoke to his agent, I called him, texted him. I like Richard. He was here for a long time and I'm sure he still expected to be here. Unless you are the one pushing for it, it's always difficult when you are traded. You are going to a new place, have new teammates. It's hard at first."

Maggette Expected To Become An Unrestricted Free Agent

Jun 30, 2008 3:22 AM EST

Clippers forward Corey Maggette is expected to opt out of his contract, becoming an unrestricted free agent, the L.A. Times are reporting.

All-Star forward Elton Brand can also become a free agent, but coming off a serious knee injury and with few teams having cap space, he is not expected to forfeit the $16.4 million he is due in the final season of his contract. Brand and agent David Falk said they'd release Brand's decision today.

If both players opt out, the Clippers are hoping to be able to retain both. If not, they'll become players in the free agent market, where they could make a run at the Wizards' Antawn Jamison.

With Shaun Livingston not being tendered a qualifying offer, the Clippers are hoping they can still re-sign the talented but oft-injured guard to a cheap contract. If they cannot, a trade with Chicago featuring Kirk Hinrich may be a possibility.

Orlando Magic

Orlando May Make Move For Maggette

The Magic could make a move for Corey Maggette within the next few weeks in an effort to bring him back to where he begin his career, according to The Orlando Sentinel.

He has until Monday night to opt out of his contract with the Clippers, and has reportedly been telling friends that he wants Orlando to make a competitive offer for his services.

"I think he'd come back in a heartbeat," said a friend of Maggette. "It's something he'd love to see happen."

The Magic only have the mid-level exception ($5.8 million) to offer, but they could assemble a deal worth roughly $40 million over five years.

Will Miami, Dallas And Utah Target Dooling?

The Heat, Mavericks, and Jazz could target soon-to-be free agent Keyon Dooling this summer, according to The Orlando Sentinel.

Magic GM Otis Smith, however, is still holding out hope that the team will be able to retain the guard.

"I'm sure there will be other teams looking at him closely this summer," said Smith. "We like him. We'd like to keep him, but that said, he is unrestricted. You like a guy but at what number?"

Dooling, an eight-year veteran, made $3.6 million last season.

"I can't speculate on what might happen," Dooling said. "But there is definitely interest out there. When a team has success like we did, your value goes up."

Miami Heat

Miami Unlikely To Ink Long-Term Free Agent Deals

The approach is two-fold, two the point and not two difficult to understand.

However you spell it, the Heat's view of Tuesday's start of NBA free agency is all about the power of two.

Dollars will not be the primary focus; years will.

Only two or fewer will be offered.

Free agents who could attract Heat interest

Miami Heat Draft database: Search every Heat pick With an eye toward a 2010 offseason that could include the free-agent likes of LeBron James, Chris Bosh, Kobe Bryant, Amare Stoudemire and his own Dwyane Wade, Heat President Pat Riley does not want to be caught short.

If a max-money free agent should become available in 2010, Riley wants to have the cash sitting on the table. If Wade grows antsy over these next two seasons about the direction of the franchise, Riley wants to be able to mollify those concerns with a 2010 upgrade fund in reserve.

Until then, if a free agent wants a Heat deal that extends beyond the end of the 2009-2010 season, he might as well look elsewhere.

For now, the offseason motto might as well be Take Two.

"The hardest thing for us," Riley said, "is to convince free agents to take short money."

That apparently will be the only option. And that could have the Heat in a later-rather-than-now mode this summer, even with trades and free-agent signings allowed to begin July 9, after eight days of a negotiation-only period.

If Riley does spend the $6 million mid-level exception on one or more players, the preferred approach would be a two-year package that gives the Heat the option on the second year.

"There's a lot of players, at the end of the summer, that become, 'OK, you didn't get your money. How about a one-and-one, with our option, OK?'" Riley said. "It could also be something less than that. That's how we're going to have to do it."

The reasoning, Riley said, is you can't go into the 2010 offseason telling a top-tier free agent to be patient, that you'll somehow create the cap space then. Further, Wade's opt-out deadline in 2010 is before the start of that summer's free agency. In other words, in June 2010 the Heat has to be able to convince Wade that it will have the resources to at least make a run at buddies such as James and Bosh.

"We're going to 99.9 percent try to create the room and let those players see that we have the room," Riley said of 2010. "Once a player sees that a team has the room, and they may have an opt-out, they see how things can change. If they don't see you have it, and you tell them, 'Well, we're going to get it,' then they don't believe you. They're smarter than that."

Riley insists he can protect the Heat for 2010 while still maintaining a focus on the here and now for a team coming off a league-worst 15-67 season.

"We're going to line up our contracts," he said. "We've got about a half dozen different formats and hypotheticals."

Among those hypotheticals could be a trade of forward Shawn Marion for multiple players. For example, the start of free agency could present an opportunity for a sign-and-trade deal with Golden State for free agents Mickael Pietrus and Andris Biedrins, who would fill multiple needs on a team sorely lacking quality depth.

Marion's future with the Heat remains tenuous in light of his goal for a lofty, long-term extension that could eliminate almost any hope of 2010 cap space.

Riley also has to consider that power forward Udonis Haslem becomes a free agent in that 2010 offseason.

"Things get a little dicey when you start to go down the road with these things," Riley said. "But these are the things you have to consider."

Sacramento Kings

Artest's Decision Coming Monday Night

Ron Artest will have to finalize his decision on whether or not to opt out of the final year of his contract with the Kings and become a free agent by midnight Monday, according to The Sacramento Bee.

Even if he opts out, there appears to be a chance that he'll remain with the Kings. However, he might turn into an intriguing option for a number of contenders looking to take the next step.

He has long been expected to play out the final year of his deal, but in an e-mail to the Sacramento Bee last week he expressed some change in his decision.

"I never knew so many teams would be coming after me," Artest wrote. "All I can say is I made a (big) turnaround."

Even if he opts out the Kings hold his Bird rights and could execute a sign-and-trade for six years, rather than the limit of five he would be able to with a new team.

Ranking the best available free agents

With the NBA draft now come and gone, fans who were disappointed by their team's picks (or lack thereof) can now look forward to Tuesday, July 1, for their team to try to add pieces to the puzzle.

Since we wrote our last free-agent update in February, the free-agent market has shifted considerably. A number of NBA veterans who had the option of opting out of their contracts chose not to, leaving a very weak crop of unrestricted free agents. Combine that with only a handful of teams with potential cap room and you have what could be a pretty lackluster summer.

Last summer, a large group of free agents -- restricted and unrestricted -- faced the reality of the NBA's new frugality, which has created practically a hard salary cap. Only a few players came away with big deals, and only a handful found anything near the money that free agents typically get on the open market.

The news doesn't get much better for the free-agent class of 2008. Given our current projections, only three teams -- the Memphis Grizzlies, the Philadelphia 76ers and the Los Angeles Clippers -- will have enough money under the cap to spend on them, assuming a $59 million salary cap this summer.

The Grizzlies got under the cap by trading away Pau Gasol for expiring contracts at the trade deadline. But Memphis GM Chris Wallace has been sending signals that the team might not spend its estimated $15 million in cap room this summer. The Grizzlies are hinting that they will wait until the summer of 2009, when they have more cap room.

The Sixers could potentially have around $20 million in cap space, if they were willing to waive both Andre Iguodala and Louis Williams to reach that figure. If they decide to keep Iguodala and Williams, both restricted free agents, it looks as though the Sixers will have around $12.4 million in cap space.

The Clippers are the other team that could have space if they do not re-sign unrestricted free agent Corey Maggette. Maggette exercised his early termination option in his contract, leaving the Clippers about $10 million under the cap if they choose not to re-sign him.

A few other teams -- the Wizards, Bobcats, Sonics and Bulls -- could conceivably get some cap room, but for it to happen they'd have to let their major free agents walk.

The Wizards could have roughly $15 million if Gilbert Arenas and Antawn Jamison were to sign somewhere else.

The Bobcats would have roughly $12 million if Emeka Okafor were to leave.

The Sonics will have room if they decide to let Robert Swift walk. If Swift is off the books, they could have around $7.5 million to spend.

But most of the above scenarios seem unlikely.

To make matters worse, with 11 teams in the luxury-tax range -- and potentially more with high draft picks coming -- it appears there will be relatively midlevel slots open as well.

So read this wish list of summer free agents with a heavy heart, fans. You may have your eyes set on a star, but unless your team has a ton of cap room or orchestrates a sign-and-trade, it's going to be a blue summer.

Group I: Unrestricted free agents

1. Gilbert Arenas, Wizards: Arenas has turned himself into a max player over the past few years and, despite recent knee troubles, will likely cash in on his newfound celebrity status. While he continues to maintain publicly that his first choice is to re-sign with Washington, it's possible that, given his eccentricity, he could change his mind.

The biggest issue for Arenas is the same one that plagues all the free agents: Who else has the money to pay him? I can't see the 76ers or Grizzlies spending the cash. The Clippers would have interest, but Arenas already spurned them once.

2. Corey Maggette, Clippers: Maggette has been on the trading block for years and appears eager to bolt the Clippers. He's making $7 million next season and should be due a raise.

Teams will be out in force trying to get him, but most will have only the midlevel exception to offer -- which would mean he'd be taking a pay cut. A sign-and-trade is the most likely option, with the Phoenix Suns looking like the team most interested in him. They could offer a swap of Leandro Barbosa that may interest L.A.

3. Antawn Jamison, Wizards: Jamison is still putting up big scoring and rebounding numbers at the age of 32. He even made a surprise appearance at the All-Star Game this past season. Washington will likely try to lock him up, and should have the best shot to do so.

With teams capped out, which team is going to spend all of its money on a 32-year-old?

4. DeSagana Diop, Nets: He's only 25, but five points and five boards are about all you're going to get from him. Still, he's big and he plays good defense … meaning some team will blow its midlevel exception on him. I think Dallas is the front-runner to give him a ridiculous deal.

5. Beno Udrih, Kings: The Kings were impressed enough with his play that they felt no remorse in letting Mike Bibby go. But will they be able to keep him? As the only decent unrestricted point guard on the market, Udrih is drawing a lot of interest. Expect him to get multiple offers for the full midlevel from a number of teams desperate for a point guard. I'd put the Clippers at the top of the list.

6. Kurt Thomas, Spurs: He's 35 years old, but still tough enough to help just about any title contender. The Spurs got him in a steal of a deal at the trade deadline. Look for them to try to lock him up with a three-year deal this summer.

7. James Posey, Celtics: Posey helped himself with a strong performance against the Lakers in the Finals. He's another player who should get a three- to four-year midlevel deal somewhere.

8. Mickael Pietrus, Warriors: No one is sure why the Warriors didn't play Pietrus more. He's one of the most athletic defenders in the league and he's a solid 3-point shooter. Some team will pick him up and try to use him in a Bruce Bowen-type role.

9. Ricky Davis, Heat: The talented but troubled swingman hasn't helped his cause in his second tour with Miami. Pat Riley thought, after dumping him the first time, that Davis finally had the maturity to play for him. But Riley is clearly reassessing the situation. Davis looks like a midlevel-or-below type of player. I doubt he returns to the Heat.

10. Kwame Brown, Grizzlies: The former No. 1 pick has run out of excuses. Yes, he's huge, athletic and only 25 years old. But after seven years in the league, he's yet to prove that he's anything more than a backup. Someone will pay him something, but no one is expecting much.

Other notables: Shaun Livingston, Clippers; Brent Barry, Spurs; Bostjan Nachbar, Nets; Carlos Arroyo, Magic; Chris Duhon, Bulls; Eduardo Najera, Nuggets; Matt Barnes, Warriors; Alonzo Mourning, Heat; Gerald Green, Rockets; Patrick O'Bryant, Warriors; Jason Williams, Heat; Juwan Howard, Mavs; Jarvis Hayes, Pistons; Robert Horry, Spurs; James Jones, Blazers; Michael Finley, Spurs; Jannero Pargo, Hornets; Damon Stoudamire, Spurs; Sam Cassell, Celtics; Jamaal Magloire, Nets; Kareem Rush, Pacers; Gordan Giricek, Suns; Michael Doleac, Timberwolves; Francisco Elson, Sonics; Keyon Dooling, Magic; Quinton Ross, Clippers; Antoine Wright, Mavericks; Fred Jones, Knicks; Juan Dixon, Pistons; Maurice Evans, Magic; Primoz Brezec, Raptors; Anthony Johnson, Kings; Tyronn Lue, Kings; Theo Ratliff, Pistons; Adonal Foyle, Magic; Sebastian Telfair, Timberwolves; Kirk Snyder, Timberwolves.

Group II: Restricted free agents

Only six first-round draft picks from the 2004 draft were signed to extensions last fall. That means there will be some serious young talent available this summer. These players' restricted status still makes it likely they'll stay with their current teams, but at least they'll be in play:

1. Andre Iguodala, Sixers: Iguodala's decision to turn down a $57 million deal last summer is tough to justify. At the time, the Sixers appeared to be the only team with significant cap room; I'm not sure where he thought his next paycheck would come from. He had a great regular season, but a woeful postseason has put his stock back in check. He's coveted by the Grizzlies, but the chances of them prying him away from Philly look very slim.

2. Josh Smith, Hawks: On talent and potential, Smith should be on top of this list. He's a freakish athlete who can score, rebound and block shots. What holds him back is a questionable attitude. Nonetheless it appears the Hawks have to re-sign him.

Given the Hawks' ownership woes, Smith is one of the few restricted free agents a team with cap space may try to pluck away -- the same way the Hawks did with Joe Johnson a few years ago. I could see the Sixers making a run at him.

3. Emeka Okafor, Bobcats: Okafor turned down $13 million per season to hit free agency this summer. He's not the best player on this list, but he's the best young center on the market. Still, there's no guarantee he'll get more money from another team. I'm sure the Grizzlies will be interested, but they know the Bobcats will match. I don't see him going anywhere, but a sign-and-trade isn't out of the question here if the negotiations go on too long.

4. Jose Calderon, Raptors: Calderon played at an All-Star level this past season. When T.J. Ford went down with injuries, he became the leader of the Raptors and proved to be the best true point guard on the free-agent market.

The Raptors say they'll match any offer for Calderon and I believe them -- especially now that they've agreed to a trade with the Pacers that will ship T.J. Ford to Indiana. As it stands now, he's their only point guard. Still, don't be shocked if the Sixers make a big offer to him. They need a long-term replacement for Andre Miller and I hear Sixers GM Ed Stefanski is a big fan.

5. Luol Deng, Bulls: Everyone loves Deng's talent, but so do the Bulls. At least they used to. Injuries and a poor season have hurt his value around the league. Still, it's hard to see the Bulls not matching any offer Deng gets next summer.

He declined a $57.5 million extension in October, so if he makes more than that he'll come out ahead. It will be interesting to see if the budget-conscious Bulls will take advantage of the market conditions and offer him much less.

6. Andris Biedrins, Warriors: Biedrins didn't get the lucrative contract offer that several others did. He was looking for something in the five-year, $50 million range and got an offer that was reportedly substantially lower.

Biedrins falls a little bit into the Anderson Varejao category -- energetic big man whose stats don't tell the whole story in terms of on-court contributions. Given that he continues to improve and he's only 21 years old, it's hard to believe the Warriors wouldn't match an offer.

7. Monta Ellis, Warriors: He's young and he can score. But his restricted status is going to hurt him. No team has the money to offer him more than the midlevel, and he probably feels as though he's worth considerably more than that. He's a player who may be better off taking the one-year tender from the Warriors so that he can be an unrestricted free agent in 2009.

8. Josh Childress, Hawks: Childress doesn't get nearly the respect or hype of many of his teammates in Atlanta, but he's been a devastatingly effective sixth man and who might still be expendable given all of Atlanta's wing talent. He probably can't get more than a midlevel deal on this market, but he'd be a bargain at that price.

9. Ben Gordon, Bulls: Of all the players who turned down lucrative contract extensions last summer, Gordon made the most mind-boggling decision. He turned down a five-year, $50 million deal that seemed above market value on a down season.

For him to recoup that money this summer seems almost impossible … and now that the Bulls have added Larry Hughes to the mix, it's no longer clear where Gordon fits into the picture.

There isn't a huge market for undersized 2-guards with streaky jump shots. Gordon is most likely to be the top restricted free agent not to have his offer matched, but he's going to struggle to get a huge offer from anyone. Gordon may be better off taking the Bulls' one-year tender offer.

10. Nenad Krstic, Nets: Before his knee injury last season, Krstic looked like he'd be locked up by the Nets. Now the uncertainty over his health could hurt his value.

Philadelphia is one team to watch for. Sixers GM Ed Stefanski was a fan while he was back in New Jersey. A sign-and-trade is another possibility for the Nets.

Other notables: Louis Williams, Sixers; Craig Smith, Timberwolves; Ronny Turiaf, Lakers; Sasha Vujacic, Lakers; Daniel Gibson, Cavaliers; Ryan Gomes, Timberwolves; Robert Swift, Sonics; Carlos Delfino, Raptors; Carl Landry, Rockets; Kelenna Azubuike, Warriors; Delonte West, Cavs; David Harrison, Pacers; Walter Herrmann, Pistons; J.R. Smith, Nuggets; Tony Allen, Celtics; Dorell Wright, Heat; Salim Stoudamire, Hawks; Mickael Gelabale, Sonics; Randolph Morris, Knicks .
