Carter Emerges as Team Leader

There?s still the usual carping about Vince Carter, just less of it. If there was one positive that emerged after the Jason Kidd trade, it was Vince Carter?s decision to take on the mantle of team leader ? both on and off the court, particularly with younger players. Rod Thorn couldn?t have been more effusive in his praise Monday, even citing Carter?s defense at season?s end.

VINCE CARTER MEDICAL UPDATE

East Rutherford, NJ – New Jersey Nets guard Vince Carter underwent successful arthroscopic right ankle surgery today, Wednesday, April 23, 2008, Nets President Rod Thorn announced. The procedure, performed by Dr. Martin O'Malley at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan, included the removal of multiple loose bodies and a bone spur from the ankle, as well as a debridement of the ankle.

Carter will be on crutches for several weeks, after which time he will begin rehabilitation. He is expected to be fully recovered by the time the team begins training camp for the 2008-09 season.

Carter played in 76 games during the 2007-08 season, averaging 21.3 points, 6.0 rebounds and 5.1 assists. He led the team in scoring 36 times, assists 21 times and rebounding 15 times and was one of only three NBA players (Kobe Bryant, Lebron James) to average more than 20 points, six rebounds and five assists throughout the season. The eight-time All-Star holds career averages of 23.8 points 5.5 rebounds and 4.2 assists in 10 NBA seasons.

Não é que ele precise, mas já tem desculpa para passar mais 65 jogos em ritmo de street basket.

É trocar rapidamente o Jefferson pelo Ron Artest e o Harris pelo Marbury para nos tornarmos oficialmente nos novos Knicks.

RJ to Toronto? Dave D and HoopsWorld Like the Idea

Buried in his weekly column is this suggestion by Dave D’Alessandro: “Andrea Bargnani and expiring contracts (Joey Graham, Jorge Garbajosa) for Richard Jefferson, who would be the perfect wing-walker for the point guard tandem in Toronto”. Dave thinks Bargnani is salvageable in spite of his disappointing second season. Hoopsworld agrees the Raps could use RJ. As for RJ? “If they traded me within the division,” he tells D’Alessandro. “I’d kill them four times a year”.

Will Raptors Pursue Jefferson, Free Agents?

Minutes after Toronto lost in the first round of the playoffs for the second straight season, General Manager Bryan Colangelo admitted head coach Sam Mitchell's job is secure, although some reports suggest such safekeeping is merely for the time being.

Then again, that doesn't mean change won't come to Toronto's roster this offseason.

"This is the sum of it all: we need to get some more help for Chris Bosh," Colangelo told The Toronto Star. "Whether it's protecting him inside in the paint, getting a little bit more of a presence in there, to just getting him another scorer that's going to shoulder some of that burden, it's something that's clear we have to get better."

The wish list starts with - but isn't restricted to - rebounding help, shoring up the defense and adding a couple complementary parts to surround their marquee player. But where will Colangelo turn for such improvements?

Free agency is the best bet, not to mention a potential trade or two with the Raptors being able to dangle their lone draft selection – the 17th overall pick – and perhaps a current point guard or some expiring contracts as well.

But the actual name to keep in mind during the Raptors offseason may be New Jersey's Richard Jefferson.

Jefferson (22.6 points, 4.2 rebounds per game) remains under contract with the Nets but his future in East Rutherford is fairly uncertain. Look for management – team president Rod Thorn and assistant Kiki Vandeweghe - to at least listen to trade offers this offseason; fitting considering Thorn danced the same jig with offers from teams for Jefferson last summer according to multiple sources close to HOOPSWORLD.

Could Colangelo be the first to call Thorn this time around?

Word out of New Jersey now– according to Jefferson himself – is that he wants to return to the Nets, but nothing is guaranteed at this point in the still young offseason and Thorn remains unsure of the changes coming in East Rutherford.

Obviously a deal involving Toronto and New Jersey for Jefferson would include a package or maybe a sign-and-trade, but at least Toronto has the pieces to work with and considering the Nets current rebuilding process, don't be surprised if negotiations would include the Raptors first round draft pick.

Toronto also has a mid-level exception to utilize - estimated at $5.6 million - and the expiring contracts of Rasho Nesterovic, Jorge Garbajosa and Anthony Parker to use.

Something has to give.

It's hard to imagine Toronto wanting to get younger at this point, and at least adding a slasher type like Jefferson brings more than just scoring to the table: he brings valuable postseason experience.

Considering the Raptors postseason track record, you have to think Mitchell and Colangelo like the sound of that.

Toronto also has some free agency questions of their own to answer with Jose Calderon, Carlos Delfino listed as restricted free agents, Primoz Brezec and Nesterovic (player option) unrestricted, and Jamario Moon having limited salary protection.

But while Colangelo will busy himself with some roster spring cleaning, he'll surely also seek other free agents available around the league.

Both Chicago's Luol Deng (17 points, 6.3 rebounds per game) and Ben Gordon (18.6 points, 3 assists per game) are potential restricted free agents and could be in the Bulls future plans, but that depends if they officially test the waters or not and Colangelo gets to them first. Either one, if not the duo itself, would surely offer more balanced scoring in the paint and backcourt.

Hard to imagine the word defense being affiliated with the Denver Nuggets, but Eduardo Najera may draw an eye from the Raptors front office as well. An unrestricted free agent, Najera's numbers aren't astounding (5.5 points, 4.3 rebounds per game) by any means, yet his savvy veteran hustle makes him appealing on the open market for sure.

Still hard to believe Andre Iguodala (19.9 points, 5.4 rebounds per game) could be available after the Philadelphia 76ers passed on granting him a contract extension during the regular season, thus allowing Iguodala to likely opt for restricted free agency once Philly's postseason run concludes.

The same can be said for Washington's Antawn Jamison (unrestricted) and Gilbert Arenas (early termination option). Landing both Jamison (21.4 points, 10.2 rebounds per game) and Arenas (19.4 points, 5.1 assists per game) is far fetched, but snagging one or the other isn't.

Clearly management desires experience, the kind of know how that will keep Chris Bosh from shouldering the load yet again. Regardless if such help arrives via free agency or a major move, the options are truly endless at this point for Colangelo.

Now only time will tell which moves he makes to improve the Raptors rosters, and maybe their chances of moving past the first round next postseason.

Eu estou ficando louco, e` que so` pode.

Na semana passada apareceu uma gajo a dizer que a saida do Melo era o melhor que podia acontecer aos Nuggets. Hoje sou surpreendido com isso:

Iannazzone: Nets Have Spoken to Nuggets about ‘Melo, Camby

Al Iannazzone in Thursday’s Record reports that the Nets have had exploratory talks with the Nuggets about both Carmelo Anthony and Marcus Camby, but nothing is imminent. Iannazzone adds that while Denver is “not committed to moving Anthony yet … they are listening to offers”. Iannazzone also reports the Nets have a single $3.3 million trade exception available.

Ridicule tops this Nuggets survey

By Woody Paige

The Denver Post

Article Last Updated: 05/14/2008 01:28:48 AM MDT

Percentage of poll participants that would like to see Dirk Nowitzki in a Nuggets uniform: 18.35. (Ronald Martinez, Getty Images)Survey says: A.I. and J.R. can coexist in the backcourt and the foreground.

It can be assumed, with reasonable assurance, that Stan Kroenke, George Karl, Mark Warkentien and Rex Chapman — the Nuggets' deep-thinkers tank — did not vote in, or even glance at, The Post's (unempirical) "Pick and roll with it" poll.

My Monday column offered Seven Sensible Solutions for the Nuggets to consider in the offseason and asked for your choice(s). The people have spoken, at least those who have access to the Internet, can move a cursor and care enough to respond.

At last check, 3,165 votes were cast, and 75 voters commented.

Before announcing the winner, I present the loser.

According to a few (many), I must be smoking

weed or doing crack, senile, intellectually challenged, "an idiot for suggesting Carmelo (Anthony) be traded," "pulling drivel off the top of your head," "a bandwagon fan" and I should "take a frying plan and hit yourself in the head with it." Not all the remarks were so kind. (Shouldn't one have to be licensed to use a computer?)

But enough about me.

Just over 20 percent of the poll participants selected answer (pun intended) No. 3 — which was, and I quote myself, "Tell (Allen) Iverson he is the Nuggets' full-time point guard, expected to average a dozen assists a game and a dozen fewer shots a game, and elevate J.R. Smith to starting shooting guard. . . . (Marcus) Camby, who will be 35 next season and is beginning to decline, will have to be jettisoned, and with the loss of free agent (Eduardo) Najera, the Nuggets could add a big body."

Hmm . . . interesting.

Nobody else has advocated making A.I., who is an uncanny passer when he wants to be (7.14 assists per game since joining the Nuggets) and needs to drive more, shoot from the outside less, the point guard all the time and starting J.R. at shooting guard next season.

Smith shot 46 percent from the field (and converted 40 percent of his 3-pointers) for the season as a backup and averaged, from February to April, 14.1, 15.6 and 15.3 points — and 18.3 in four games against the Lakers in the playoffs. Despite being a runaway train (and an occasional train wreck), Smith would average 20-plus points in a full-time role, and Iverson, passing to Smith and Anthony regularly, would average 10-plus assists and 18-plus points.

But the 20.28 percent approval of the A.I.-J.R. duet was only a plurality. The runner-up was "Send Carmelo Anthony and Marcus Camby to the Mavericks for Dirk Nowitzki" with 18.35 percent. If you combine that vote with the percentage for the Nuggets doing a deal with the New Jersey Nets involving Anthony, the total is 28.74 percent.

There is sentiment for the first time since Anthony arrived in Denver for him to be moved. The rationale for a trade has to be based on the Nuggets' lack of playoff success in five seasons (four victories) with Anthony (a 39 percent shooter in the postseasons) — and perhaps his "We quit" quote — and his lack of curiosity about playing defense. And his activities away from the game.

(A writer in Fort Worth has recommended that the Mavs acquire Anthony, and more, for Josh Howard, self-acclaimed marijuana user. And you believe I'm the fool?)

The real loser (other than moi) in the poll was "Nuggets hold on to what they got." Only 8.72 percent supported that proposal.

One correspondent stated: "The Nuggets need change. That, everyone can see, and give credit to The Denver Post acting GM . . . as he is creative in his attempt at a solution." Ahem.

About 91 1/3 percent don't want the status to remain quo. Of course, most of us have vivid memories of recent events.

"None of these choices is any good for the team," wrote another. "If they do any of these I don't know what I would think of the front office anymore . . . Karl needs to go."

The coach, who I support (which doesn't help him), did not receive a vote of confidence from the pin pals. "I read that Karl is going to coach differently next year . . . When that flops we can look at some midseason trades to switch up the chemistry, squeak into the eighth seed, get booted in four and (the Nuggets will) complain that the mix of players was an improvement (and) they just didn't get a chance to play together all season, and the 2009-10 season will be the one!"

Finally: ". . . Let it go people. I think people are upset at the fact that the Nuggets are embarrassed year after year in the first-round exits." Duh. Yeah.

It is certain, beyond a reasonable doubt, that the Nuggets' brain trust will study the results of the survey, take all our opinions under advisement and pay no attention whatsoever to them.

Nets must aggressively pursue major trade

Thursday,May 15, 2008

Nets president Rod Thorn and general manager Kiki Vandeweghe talked of keeping the nucleus together after finishing 34-48 this past season, but that's not what they want. That's not their plan.

They would like to do something big. Remember Thorn's specialty has been pulling off blockbusters and Vandeweghe rebuilt the Nuggets when he was their GM.

Thinking big, the Nets have had exploratory conversations with Denver about Carmelo Anthony and Marcus Camby, league sources said. Vandeweghe traded for Camby and drafted Anthony in Denver.

Nothing is imminent. The Nuggets are not committed to moving Anthony yet. But after his recent legal troubles plus five straight first-round losses, they are listening to offers for their players.

More big names could become available by the end of the playoffs and as the draft nears. All the coaching changes could lead teams to shake up their rosters to fit their style.

Having said that, the Nets have assets to do something: three draft picks, Keith Van Horn's contract, young players Marcus Williams, Sean Williams, Josh Boone, Richard Jefferson coming off his best statistical season, Nenad Krstic's contract that they can use in a sign-and-trade and one $3.3 million trade exception from the Jason Kidd deal. (It was two, but the league changed it.)

A big night for the Nets will be Tuesday's draft lottery. When they know where they will select – if form holds it will be No. 10 – they can decide what to do with their picks and see how valuable they are around the league.

With two first-rounders, the Nets are prime candidates to deal. Although Vandeweghe said they want to get younger, the ultimate plan is getting better. Adding a major piece like an Anthony would do that.

The Nets may not have enough to get him, but they have to be aggressively pursue moves this off-season. Returning the same team would be a big mistake.
