Sammer’s demand

'Everything for the benefit of the club!'

 

 

Matthias Sammer, director of sport at FC Bayern, has been at his post for just under two weeks. The 44-year-old has previously avoided the public limelight, preferring to apply himself to his work. Sammer does not want to lose any time and he is keen to get to know his new club as soon as possible. He hasn’t missed a single training session so far. Sammer watches, thinks things over and confers with head coach Jupp Heynckes.

 

On Friday, at the unveiling of new signing Mario Mandzukic, Sammer spoke for the first time since his inaugural press conference. And he described his duties as follows: “I’m going to try and introduce sporting guidelines in the future without stepping on the toes of the coach.” Sammer strongly rebuffed questions on tactics and the team formation. He declared: “We’ve got an outstanding coach. I’m not prepared to talk about those matters!”

 

Sammer did not want to hold forth as the new signing from VfL Wolfsburg, Mario Mandzukic, was the centre of attention today. But a jovial Sammer did allow the journalists present for his debut at the media centre in Säbener Strasse to tease some information out of him. He focused on two particular issues. Firstly, the increased competition for places this season and, secondly, further, potential additions to the existing squad.

 

Sammer is firmly convinced: “We’ve got a very good team with very good alternatives.” Further signings are not necessarily essential with the main emphasis being on “home-grown potential”, declared the 44-year-old: “We still have good options for improving our game.” The team was “good” in last season’s campaign, ”we’re not much short of very good - but perhaps we’re missing that key element.”

 

'I don’t rule anything out'

 

Now it’s time to find that missing element within the current group. At the same time, FC Bayern will continue to look out for players who can “add something positive to the squad”. Sammer’s maxim: “I don’t rule anything out but we’re not under pressure.”

 

Talking about pressure: it’s up to new signings Mandzukic and Co to exert that pressure on the established stars at FC Bayern. And the strong FCB squad may experience some tough decisions in the course of the coming campaign, as Sammer noted: “We expect the players to do everything for the benefit of the club. Bayern Munich is always bigger than any individual, be that a player or the director of sport.”

 

Sammer clear and decisive

 

No team on the planet is made up of just eleven players. And the legend of German football demanded the acceptance of this thought in the future: “The coach has to be allowed to consider improving the squad and not wasting time on whether it’s a problem if a particular player isn’t in the side.” Clear and decisive words. Typical of the Sammer we know.

Portanto, segue-se uma forte aposta nas camadas jovens (a sua reestruturação já tinha sido anunciada) e o treinador é realmente o homem que manda na equipa. As vedetas não têm lugar.
