"The Symphony in C major, WWV 29 of 1832 is in form a classical work. The first movement has the usual sections – exposition, development, and recapitulation – and the second is a beautiful Andante with a long melody that hardly seems to end. The third has the spikiness of a scherzo, which is interrupted by a trio, and the finale begins slowly, like the first movement, and continues in a bright mood. The instrumentation betrays Wagner’s admiration for Weber.

 

In this symphony the influence of Beethoven is evident in its character and instrumentation, and also in the similarities that exist between motives. Literal quotations from Beethoven are absent, but the atmosphere is entirely Beethovenian. Echoes are especially noticeable of the Seventh Symphony, and of the opera Fidelio which Wagner had heard a few years earlier in Leipzig, and which had made a huge impression on the young composer. Many years later he would claim that the Andante was written under the influence of the slow movements of the Fifth and Seventh symphonies. Furthermore, the opening theme of the first movement is very similar to the themes of the Leonore overtures Nos 2 and 3.

 

The deviations from his models – for instance, a lack of conciseness, especially in the first and third movements – can be interpreted as a sign of insecurity (at the time of the premiere in Prague in November 1832 Wagner was not yet twenty) or of immaturity. The latter ‘failing’ can also be understood positively, for no matter how hesitantly presented, the music shows Wagner’s idea that in a classical work the sense of drama – and, derived from that, the changes between tension and relaxation – is more important than the fixed proportions of duration among the sections. Architecture is a means, not a goal. This conviction explains Wagner’s abiding love for Beethoven, especially his Ninth Symphony, which Wagner conducted many times and which is remarkable, among much else, for its constant struggle between form and content.

 

In later years, Wagner came to understand how better to translate Beethoven’s ongoing struggle into a new form. Between 1878 and 1882 he slightly revised the Symphony, in the second movement adding a few dynamic markings and here and there altering the harmony in order to enhance the dramatic power of the work."
