"Harpsichord Concerto, Op. 14", de Hugo Distler (107.º aniversário):

"(...) For Protestant musicians there was hope that Protestant church music in Germany would be given more prominence and stability once the National Socialist Party [partido nazi] came to power, Distler, therefore, joined the NSDAP (Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei or National Socialist German Workers Party) in 1933 hoping to become an active member of the new nationalism that would bring structure and prosperity to Germany and the music profession. It was impossible for him to know that his hopes would be unfulfilled and that party officials would complicate his professional life. Unlike many other composers during this time Distler chose not to compose party-affirmative pieces for official purposes. However, he did dedicate some of his music to 'potentially all ceremonials and communal celebrations'.

"(...) In 1937 Distler was appointed a regional examiner for the city of Stuttgart with the Reichsmusikkammer (RMK or Reich Music Chamber). The RMK was part of the Reichsministrium für Volksaufklärung und Propaganda (RMVP or Reich Ministry for People's Clarification and Propaganda), an organization within the Reichskulturkammer (RKK or Reich Culture Chamber). The RKK established regional music examining boards set up to 'protect the German people against the influence of undesirable and deleterious music, such as phonograph records by Jews and Negroes, or non-Aryan printed music'. Music examiners were appointed to visit all private music teachers and to determine whether they were teaching in a manner favorable to the Nazi party. Many teachers were declared undesirable and thereby lost their only means of livelihood. As one of the regional examiners, Distler was apparently greatly distressed with this task.

"(...) Hans Severus Ziegler organized the Entartete Musik-Ausstellung (degenerate music exhibition) in Düsseldorf in an attempt to cast public light on expressions of art that did not coincide with Nazi ideology. Distler's Harpsichord Concerto, op. 14 was in danger of being branded 'degenerate' and 'un-German' and only through the intervention of composer Gerhard Maasz was he able to avoid this label. The Third Reich would not even permit Bärenreiter to publish the score until it removed the third movement.

" (...) In the fall of 1939 Hitler's Nazi forces invaded Poland forcing France and Britain, who were allied with Poland, to declare war on Germany in honor of their alliance with that country. During the early months of 1940 Distler was summoned by the military to appear for a physical examination. Distler was not amenable to joining the military or fighting in a war. There is record of Distler reaching out to his friend the German Theologian, Oskar Söhngen (1900-1983) in March asking, 'Have you any good counsel?' By May of that year, Distler was made professor at the Stuttgart Hochschule and his appointment temporarily freed him from immediate war service. Less than six months later, however, he received another call to report for military service with a Panzer Division and in a letter to his wife he fully expressed the tension this latest summons caused, 'You know how an indescribable loneliness remains, overpowering me, a feeling of being separated from everything and everybody.'

"On October 1, 1940 Distler was appointed by Fritz Stein to succeed Kurt Thomas as teacher of composition, organ and choral conducting at the Staatliche Akademische Hochschule für Musik (State Academy College for Music) in Charlottenburg, Berlin. Distler faced stronger opposition in Berlin to his church music background than he experienced in Stuttgart. This opposition came primarily from the Hitlerjugend (Hitler Youth) who were bitterly against church music. The Hitlerjugend worked hard to sabotage Distler's cathedral choir by scheduling organizational meetings involving the boys of the choir during rehearsal times so that no matter when rehearsals were scheduled, all or part of his treble singers were absent. Finally, he went directly to the ministry of education to complain and received the blunt answer that he should either do 'secular music with the boys or continue his sacred music without them.'

"Despite these constant challenges, Distler was made director of the Berlin State Choir and the Cathedral Choir on April 1, 1942. During this time he began (but never completed) two large works: the St. John Passion and Die Weltalter (The World's Age). The burden of increased aerial attacks, the deaths of friends, professional strain, the hostility of the authorities, and the constant threat of recruitment into military service all contributed to the overburdening of his physical resources and a profound spiritual depression that ultimately led to his suicide on November 1, 1942."

Curioso que eu tenha visto "Ballet Mécanique" há cerca de duas semanas. Trata-se de uma curta criada pelo artista Fernand Léger, com música composta por George Antheil. Não é difícil encontrar o filme.
