GameTime: NBA Playoff Seeding Changes

The GameTime crew discusses the changes to playoff seeding format.

 

NEW YORK (AP) — The NBA will now seed playoff teams solely by their record, throwing out the top-four protection for teams who win their divisions.

 

The expected change was unanimously approved Tuesday by the league's Board of Governors. Teams in each conference will be seeded from one to eight by their won-loss record.

 

Previously, division winners were guaranteed no worse than the No. 4 seed, a rule that became heavily criticized last season when Portland ended up No. 4 in the powerful Western Conference despite the sixth-best record in the conference.

 

The league also changed the tiebreaker procedures, making head-to-head results the first tiebreaker for seeding and home-court advantage, and whether a team won its division second. A division winner previously got the home-court advantage if it met a team with the same record in the playoffs.

Sources: Bulls signing Jordan Crawford

 

Free-agent guard Jordan Crawford has reached agreement on a contract with the Chicago Bulls, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

 

Crawford, who played in summer league with the Dallas Mavericks, will join the Bulls on a non-guaranteed training camp deal.

 

In four NBA seasons, Crawford has averaged 12.2 points, 3.2 assists and 2.6 rebounds in 24.7 minutes per game. He split the 2013-14 season with the Warriors and Celtics – with his most impressive stretch coming in 39 games in Boston where he averaged 13.7 points and 5.7 assists.

 

Crawford signed with Xinjiang in the Chinese Basketball Association last offseason, playing five games before an eye injury. He also appeared in six games for Fort Wayne in the NBA D-League.

 

Crawford was acquired by the Atlanta Hawks with the No. 27 pick in the 2010 NBA draft.

Bulls reveal new court design, including larger logo and Chicago flag's four stars

 

The Bulls announced subtle changes to the United Center floor for the upcoming season, including a larger midcourt logo and an ode to the Chicago flag.

 

The iconic midcourt logo has increased in size by 75 percent, according to a press release from the team, and the basketball behind the logo has been removed.

 

The "Chicago Bulls" font on either baseline has been changed to match the font of the official Bulls logo, along with the font used in "Bulls.com" and "@ChicagoBulls" along the north apron of the court.

 

The south apron of the court will feature the four stars from the City of Chicago flag, which "highlight the team's civic pride and incorporate the 'Chicago Basketball' branding campaign."

 

The lines on the court have been changed to all black. Previously the midcourt line and 3-point lines were red, and the lines inside the paint were white.

 

The new court will debut on October 6 when the Bulls open their preseason slate against the Milwaukee Bucks.
