Newcastle reject Liverpool approach for Enrique

Liverpool have been rebuffed in their first move for Spanish defender Jose Enrique.

However, his club, Newcastle, are resigned to losing the highly-rated full-back, after he indicated he will not sign a new contract and wants a move from St James' Park.

Reds boss Kenny Dalglish is a big admirer of Enrique, who has made a huge impression on the Premier League this season.

The Anfield outfit are thought to be prepared to offer in the region of £4million for the 25-year-old, and have made an informal approach for his services.

Newcastle are not interested in doing business at that price, and have made clear to all potential suitors they value the Spaniard in the region of £15m.

But the left-back has just one year left on his contract and is refusing to talk about a new deal. Magpies boss Alan Pardew admits the player has his sights on a move.

Speaking this week, Pardew conceded Enrique may be allowed to leave:

"There’s no point keeping a player who has set his sights on a club he has perceived is bigger," he said. "You can’t keep a player that’s unmotivated.”

The £15m asking price is clearly unrealistic given the amount of time remaining on the deal Enrique signed when he joined Newcastle from Villarreal in 2007.

Liverpool believe £4m is a fair offer, as it would allow the Magpies to recoup most of the fee they paid for the Spain Under-21 international.

Negotiations will now begin in earnest, with Pardew determined to push the fee up as high as possible.

There is a sense of anger at St James' Park, with the suspicion that Enrique has already decided on a move to Anfield.

The player will make clear over the coming weeks that he wants to further his career by moving to a club with genuine Champions League aspirations, and Liverpool clearly fit the bill.

Dalglish has had a left-back high on his list of priorities since returning to the club in January.

He has also kept a close watch on Celtic's Emilio Izaguirre and Maynor Figueroa of Wigan.

Honduras international Izaguirre is aware of the Anfield interest.

Voted player of the year in Scotland this season after a series of outstanding performances, he admitted he would be interested in a move south of the border.

“This is flattering to any player, that Liverpool shows an interest in your services. I still do not know anything - I have left everything in the hands of my agent and club officials,” he said.

Dalglish will try to pursue a deal with Newcastle over Enrique, but it is increasingly obvious he will turn to Izaguirre if the Geordies continue to be unrealistic in their valuation of the Spaniard.

Farewell to Reo-Coker and Carew as released list announced

Nigel Reo-Coker heads list of released players at Villa.

Nigel Reo-Coker heads a list of 10 players who have been released by Villa.

The former England under-21 captain, who has frequently deputised as Villa skipper in Stiliyan Petrov's absence, is joined by John Carew, Moustapha Salifou, Robert Pires, and Isaiah Osbourne.

Youngsters Harry Forrester, Arsenio Halfhuid, Durrell Berry, Ellis Deeney and Calum Flanagan have also left the club.

Reo-Coker spent four years in claret and blue after joining Villa from West Ham in July 2007.

He enjoyed a regular berth in his first season at the club, playing in the centre and on the right of midfield.

He figured intermittently in the following seasons before establishing himself as a mainstay under Gerard Houllier in the last campaign.

Norwegian international Carew spent last term at Stoke and is now free to find another club after leaving Villa, but his time in claret and blue will be remembered fondly by the Villa faithful.

Carew arrived at Villa with a big reputation, following impressive stints at clubs like Valencia, Roma and Lyon and he more than lived up to it, producing some terrific performances.

The man mountain finished as leading scorer in three seasons consecutively and won a lot of admirers.

His 2008-09 goal of the season against Stoke was a highlight as well as his hat-trick to turn last year's FA Cup quarter-final against Reading in Villa's favour.

Pires was another who arrived at Villa with a big reputation, although he admitted his best days were behind him.

In the games he did play - mainly as a sub - he impressed, his FA Cup display against Blackburn a particular highlight.

Salifou became a cult hero at Villa without seeing much first team action.

A tenacious midfielder who had arrived from Swiss club Wil 1900 on a 12-month contract in August 2007, he did enough in his debut campaign to earn an extension to his deal.

The chant of 'Sali, Salifou' rang out from the Holte End on many occasions and his star performance came against Slavia Prague in a UEFA Cup win.

He didn't play a part in any Villa games in the 2009-10 season yet Salifou was probably the most high-profile claret and blue player in the press after a gun attack on his coach whilen away in the Africa Cup of Nations with Togo.

Osbourne has remained on the periphery over the past three seasons, with most of his first team action coming away from Villa Park.

After featuring in a handful of cup matches in 2008-09, he enjoyed a brief loan spell at Nottingham Forest, becoming the first signing of Billy Davies' reign.

His next destination was Middlesbrough, where he played nine times during a temporary stint.

Either side of his loan spell in the North East, Osbourne featured on numerous occasions for Villa's Reserve League South-winning second string.

The local lad made numerous appearances for the first team since coming through the youth ranks.

His debut came as a late substitute against Fulham at Villa Park in October 2006, while he showed his talent with an impressive cameo from the bench in a 1-1 draw at Arsenal in March 2008.

Last term he spent a loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday.

Reserve and youth regulars Forrester, Halfhuid, Berry, Deeney and Flanagan have also been released.

Scott Dann transfer bid 'expected from Liverpool' as Arsenal and Spurs dally

Liverpool are believed to be putting together a transfer bid for Birmingham City defender Scott Dann, with Arsenal and Spurs also interested.

The Anfield side are in the market for a centre-half to assist Martin Skrtel and Jamie Carragher, as well as the injury-plagued Daniel Agger.

Lifelong Liverpool fan Dann is believed to fit the bill for Reds manager Kenny Dalglish, and Birmingham are almost certain to cash in on one of their most saleable assets following their relegation.

Premier League rivals Arsenal and Tottenham are also believed to be interested in the player, but Liverpool are looking to get a bid in early to steal a march on the north London sides.

All three clubs have also been linked with Bolton Wanderers centre-back Gary Cahill.

But with Cahill valued at £18m and Dann at £10m, Dann is the preferred option for the Reds.

The 24-year-old former England under-21 international formed a formidable partnership with Roger Johnson at the heart of Blues' defence in the first half of the season.

His season-ending hamstring injury was cited as one of the major factors in Birmingham's decline in the new year, which despite victory in the Carling Cup final, culminated in their slide towards the championship.

Liverpool closing in on £10m deal for Wigan Athletic midfielder James McCarthy

The highly rated Irish star has his heart set on a move to Anfield and could be the Reds' first summer signing as talks between the two clubs reach an advanced stage

Kenny Dalglish is a huge admirer of the 20-year-old and the Reds are believed to be willing to spend as much as £10 million to land one of the brightest prospects in the Premier League.

Wigan had initially asked for £16m for the Republic of Ireland international but there have been indications that they are now ready to soften their stance, with manager Roberto Martinez promised he can re-invest money raised from player sales.

“It is 90 per cent done, all sides now seem to accept it is going to happen and it's a matter of everyone trying to get the best deal,” a source close to the talks told Goal.com.

McCarthy turned down a move to Merseyside before joining Wigan for £1.2m from Scottish side Hamilton Academical in 2009 as he felt regular football would be better for his development. He now believes he has proven he is ready to take the next step and leave the DW Stadium.

McCarthy is under contract until 2014 but Wigan are regarded as a selling club by other English sides following the high profile transfers of Antonio Valencia and Wilson Palacios to Manchester United and Tottenham respectively.

While the Latics' financial game plan is based on selling players for a huge project, Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group want to build a squad based on the best young British talent.

McCarthy, who was born in Glasgow and can play either centrally or wide, fits that billing and Reds director of football Damien Comolli agrees with Dalglish that he will be a star of the future.

“Liverpool have shown the most interest for quite a while and have convinced him that it will be the best move to fulfil his potential,” the source added. “Being a Glaswegian from a Celtic-supporting family, working with Dalglish is obviously a big factor as well.”

Anfield legend Dalglish took over from Roy Hodgson in January and is planning significant moves in the summer transfer market after signing a three-year contract last month.

Along with Comolli, the club have identified a number of targets as they look to bolster the squad by signing at least two wide men, a central midfielder, a left-back and a centre-back.

Aston Villa star Ashley Young is their No.1 target as Dalglish looks to bring in a new winger, with Sylvain Marveaux also expected to arrive from Rennes on a free transfer. The Reds have also registered an interest in £20m-rated Eden Hazard, the attacking midfielder at Lille who is a target for a number of leading European clubs.

Liverpool have shown a strong interest in Bolton centre-back Gary Cahill and Blackburn's Phil Jones, while Newcastle star Jose Enrique is their first choice left-back.

Manchester United are £478m in debt but can still afford to let Sir Alex Ferguson spend, spend, spend this summer

When the Glazer family took control at Manchester United in 2005, they did so against a backdrop of protest and cynicism. Perceived as know-nothing foreign owners with their eyes purely on profits and not on the ball, it was feared that they would burden the club with debt - and maybe even destroy it.

Six years later and some of the fears have been realised. Latest figures show that United have debts of £478million on their books, while a further £369m has been spent in that period on loan interest and fees - from the club's coffers. That interest, supporters argue, should have been spent on players.

Marshalled by the 'Green and Gold' campaign, fans have protested about steep hikes in ticket prices, about the Glazer-imposed scheme that initially made the purchasing of all cup tickets mandatory for season-ticket holders, and about the treatment of some supporters who have persisted in protesting.

article-0-0A5C17F1000005DC-250_634x503.jpg

Only last week, a 27-year-old trainee social worker and season-ticket holder, Carly Lyes, claimed that she had been the subject of 'horrific treatment' for displaying a 'Love United Hate Glazer' banner at Old Trafford last month.

After refusing to hand over her flag, she was taken to a cell in the stadium and then to a police station before being released without charge. A club spokesman said she infringed the ground rules of the stadium and was 'obstructive and aggressive'.

All these ingredients - debt, ticket prices, the remoteness of the owners and a perception that they do not care about 'ordinary' fans - have led to a heady cocktail of animosity towards the Americans.

article-0-0C0A056100000578-925_306x462.jpg

Yet on Saturday night at Wembley, United took on Barcelona as they contested their third Champions League final in four years. They have won the Premier League title in four of the past five seasons and the League Cup three times since the Glazers arrived.

And for all the talk about steep prices, Old Trafford has been packed at more than 99 per cent capacity for years, with average gates of more than 75,000 people per game - or 15,000 higher than their next closest challengers, Arsenal.

It might also come as a surprise to some that for all their debt, United have cash in the bank. A lot of cash. This summer their bank balance will reach an all-time peak of about £170m, and that money might bankroll the biggest summer spending spree United have ever had.

In some part, this is down to the biggest growth area in United's business activities; not selling tickets or the income from TV rights, but commercial deals with dozens of companies who pay top dollar to be associated with the club.

The names of the players linked to United read like a Who's Who of transfer targets from the game: from Wesley Sneijder, Alexis Sanchez and David de Gea to Ashley Young, Jack Rodwell, Charlie Adam and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain - about £130m of talent in total. And United manager Sir Alex Ferguson can afford to buy them.

He is already looking to seal a £14m deal for Young, whom he sees as a successor to Ryan Giggs, before the Aston Villa player is selected for England against Switzerland at Wembley on Saturday.

Equally, should a 'marquee' name come on to the market, a single player who would command a fee in excess of the English record £50m that Chelsea paid for Fernando Torres, then that player, too, would be within reach.

Some reports have suggested that Cristiano Ronaldo, who left United for Real Madrid for £80m two years ago, might be one such player, although sources in Spain say it is unlikely. But Neymar, the 19-yea-rold Santos striker who thrilled for Brazil against Scotland at the Emirates recently, would be well within United's price range, as would most players, barring Barca superstar Lionel Messi.

What is certain is that Ferguson wants a goalkeeper to replace Edwin van der Sar, who played his last game for United in last night's Champions League final at Wembley.

article-0-0C3FD0F200000578-931_634x286.jpg

It has been assumed that De Gea, a 20-year-old Spaniard with a price tag of almost £18m, will soon move from Atletico Madrid to United. But should that deal not happen, Van der Sar has recommended a Dutch compatriot, 28-year-old Maarten Stekelenburg of Ajax, as an alternative. He would cost about £12m.

Of similar urgency to Ferguson is finding long-term replacements for Paul Scholes and Giggs, which is where Young and a host of other midfielders from home and abroad come into the equation.

Sneijder, 26, was a key part of the Holland team who reached last year's World Cup final in South Africa and although he has said in recent days that he is not thinking about leaving Internazionale, things change quickly in football.

His sole focus until the end of this weekend will be the Milan club's Coppa Italia final today against Palermo. After that, he might well look further afield and, with a price tag of £35m, he is easily within Ferguson's summer budget.

Young has made it plain by deed if not word that he does not see a long-term future at Aston Villa by turning down a contract extension.

The England winger-cum-striker has a year left on his deal at Villa Park and Ferguson feels he will be able to sign him for a relatively knock-down price of about £14m.

article-0-0C34F3A100000578-493_634x322.jpg

Another man with the same price tag is Jack Rodwell at Everton, who are in no situation to turn down decent offers. Blackpool, relegated from the Premier League after just one season, could cash in on Adam for upwards of £8m, perhaps more if a bidding war between clubs escalates the price.

An intriguing possibility is that Ferguson will renew his interest in a young, left-sided Welshman to replace his 37-year-old left-sided Welshman Giggs, namely Tottenham's Gareth Bale.

A gem already at 21, he fits the profile of being the kind of young, pacy (and sensible) player that Ferguson admires. The only drawback would be cost, at upwards of £30m, but money should not be an obstacle this year.

For that reason, all manner of players come into the reckoning, from Sanchez, the 22-year-old Chilean wide man now at Udinese (£30m), to the 18-year-old French centre-half Raphael Varane (currently with Lens, who want about £9m), to Oxlade-Chamberlain, 17, the latest Southampton wonderkid from the same Saints academy that produced Wayne Bridge, Theo Walcott and Bale among others. He could be available for upwards of £10m.

United's commercial income has accelerated since the Glazers arrived and sought partners from Singha Beer to Turkish Airlines, Smirnoff to Epson, DHL and numerous telecommunications firms.

Collectively, they paid £40m in 2010-11 (above and beyond 'toprank' cash from Aon and Nike) to be associated with the club, and spent another £80m on marketing campaigns to promote their associations. In another few years, United will likely have an official cola partner (Coke or Pepsi), energy partner, an electronics partner and fridge partner, you name it.

Their marketing experts are also working on ways to 'monetise' their online fanbase, including 14m-plus 'followers' on Twitter, and how to make more on match day, perhaps via packages for the 'uber-rich' involving helicopter to the ground, limo transfer across the car park, private lift to a suite and Michelin dining during the match.

More immediately, Sir Alex will be pondering how to spend money, and the Glazers wondering what to do with what is left over, including clearing some of that debt.
