Julius Erving, the great and wondrous "Dr. J," was the dominant player of his era, an innovator who changed the way the game was played. He was a wizard with the ball, performing feats never before seen: midair spins and whirls punctuated by powerful slam dunks. Erving was one of the first players to make extemporaneous individual expression an integral part of the game, setting the style of play that would prevail in the decades to follow. A gracious, dignified, and disciplined man, Erving was the epitome of class and an ideal ambassador for the game.

New York Nets: The Squires, like most ABA teams, were on rather shaky financial ground. They were forced to trade Erving to the Nets in 1973--a move which eventually sent the Squires into oblivion. The Nets had been an also-ran for their first six years of existence, but Erving led them to their first ABA title in 1973-74, defeating the Utah Stars. Erving established himself as the most important player in the ABA. His spectacular play established the Nets as, finally, one of the better teams in the ABA, and brought fans and credibility to the league.

Drazen Petrovic was the advent of one of the most far-reaching changes in the makeup of the NBA -- the international influence. During the late 1980s there was the arrival of significant numbers of talented European players, a migration accelerated by the fall of communist governments in Eastern Europe. But no arrival from the former Soviet bloc was more eagerly anticipated than that of Drazen Petrovic. In four short seasons in the NBA, he was a blazing comet of tireless enthusiasm -- with shooting skills to match -- who made an everlasting mark. He was posthumously enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002.

Pergunte a qualquer fã da NBA e ele ou ela lhe dirá. Ele se lembrará do exato momento em que ouviu a trágica notícia. Quando foi divulgada a história em um dia nublado de verão, em 7 de junho de 1993 de que Drazen Petrovic havia morrido aos 28 anos de idade em um acidente automobilístico em uma auto-estrada na Alemanha, aquele foi um momento que o deixou triste, sem fala e perguntando inúmeras vezes o porquê daquilo?

O legado que Petrovic deixou para trás era imenso. Ele não apenas foi um dos maiores e mais talentosos jogadores, mas também foi um dos melhores arremessadores da NBA, mesmo em apenas quatro temporadas e 290 jogos na NBA. Mas sua marca na NBA também era a de um pioneiro. Embora houvesse outros jogadores internacionais durante a metade da década de 80s e a década de 90, como Hakeem Olajuwon, Detlef Schrempf e Rik Smits, tendo todos atingido vários níveis de sucesso na NBA, seus respectivos jogos foram aprimorados nas universidades dos E.U.A. Petrovic foi o primeiro jogador internacional a chegar diretamente do exterior para causar um impacto significativo na NBA, servindo de inspiração para que outros jogadores de todo o mundo o seguissem.

Sua grandeza não era nenhuma surpresa para aqueles que viram Petrovic jogar em sua terra natal, a Croácia, onde uma vez ele marcou 114 pontos em um jogo, acertando 40 dentro 60 arremessos, ou quando estrelou liderando a equipe olímpica da Iugoslávia na conquista da medalha de prata nas Olimpíadas de 1988.

“Drazen foi um dos maiores jogadores de todos os tempos”, afirmou Rasho Nesterovic, nascido na Eslovênia e membro do San Antonio Spurs. “Quando voltei para casa, 90 por cento das crianças tentavam ser como ele. Seu trabalho duro inspirou muitas crianças.”

Petrovic marcou uma média de 37,7 pontos em quatro temporadas no Cibona Zagreb e foi reconhecido como o Jogador do Ano da Croácia por quatro vezes, ganhando também o prêmio de MVP (jogador mais valioso) no Campeonato Europeu de 1989. Ele foi escolhido pelo Portland Trail Blazers na terceira rodada do 1986 NBA Draft (Seleção de 1986 da NBA – 60 a seleção geral) e ingressou na NBA na temporada de 1989-1990.

Ao se juntar ao campeão da Conferência Oeste de 1989, a equipe do Trail Blazers, que tinha como destaque o eterno armador do All-Star Clyde Drexler, Petrovic teve que se ajustar a uma nova função, já que ele passou a jogar em média apenas 12,5 minutos e a marcar 7,6 pontos por jogo.

As crescentes angústias e ajustes dentro e fora das quadras na tentativa de obter sucesso em um novo país foram compartilhados por outro jogador internacional de alto nível, selecionado pelo Los Angeles Lakers na 26 a escolha geral no 1989 Draft.

“Nós viemos para a NBA no mesmo ano e conversávamos pelo telefone quase todos os dias, tentando encorajara um ao outro e procurando sobreviver”, afirmou Vlade Divac. “Foi duro para ele. Ele sabia que podia jogar, mas não teve a chance de mostrar o que podia fazer.”

Deixando de lado as estatísticas, a dedicação de Petrovic aos treinos fez com que ele conquistasse o respeito de seus treinadores e companheiros de equipe. Quando o Blazers negociou o armador de 1,96 m com o New Jersey Nets em janeiro de 1991, Drexler previu grandes feitos para o croata.

“Estou lhe dizendo, esse rapaz vai entrar na equipe All-Star da Conferência Leste dentro de dois anos”, disse Drexler. “Eu garanto. Você nunca viu alguém arremessar como ele, ou trabalhar tão duro.”

Drexler estava certo. Embora Petrovic tivesse ignorado essas homenagens, ele aproveitou sua estréia com o Nets e estava determinado a mostrar aos fãs nos Estados Unidos do que os torcedores em sua terra natal estavam sentindo falta. Sua obsessão com os treinos fez com que ele atingisse um nível ainda maior e seu objetivo de ficar mais forte resultou em mais 9 kg de massa muscular.

O trabalho duro compensou. Na primeira temporada completa de Petrovic com o Nets, ele viu sua média saltar para 20,6 pontos por partida, com um índice de 50,8 por cento de arremessos convertidos, passando a jogar quase 37 minutos por partida. Ele não teria mais que se contentar com um papel de coadjuvante. Petrovic era destemido na quadra, enfrentando todos os que chegassem, não importando que seus sobrenomes fossem Jordan ou Miller. Não importava se fosse em croata ou inglês, a palavra intimidação não fazia parte do vocabulário de Petrovic.

“Drazen teve que esperar para atingir o sucesso, mas ele conseguiu”, afirmou o croata Dino Radja, que jogou quatro temporadas pelo Boston Celtics em meados da década de 90. “Ele ficou durante dois anos no banco do Portland, mas quando chegou a Nova Jersey, tornou-se um astro.”

O sucesso só deixou Petrovic mais faminto, lançando as bases para sua melhor temporada na NBA, quando ele marcou uma média de 22,3 pontos, com 51,8 por cento de aproveitamento nos arremessos, incluindo 44,9 por centro na linha de três pontos, onde ele fazia rotineiramente arremessos com uma trajetória perfeita, bem antes da terceira linha.

Petrovic havia conseguido. Embora ele devesse ter participado da equipe All-Star daquela temporada, a mídia não ignorou suas realizações, votando nele para a Terceira Equipe do All-NBA. E justamente quando sua carreira na NBA estava decolando, a tragédia se abateu sobre ele. Menos de duas semanas após ter sido reconhecido como um dos 15 melhores jogadores da NBA, Petrovic morreu.

“Bem, todos nós ficamos muitíssimo tristes naquele momento porque nós, os jogadores da Seleção Nacional (da Croácia), nos sentíamos como se fôssemos uma família.”, afirmou o veterano da NBA Toni Kukoc, que nasceu em Split, Croácia, e jogou com Petrovic nas Olimpíadas de 88 e 92, quando levaram a Iugoslávia a conquistar a medalha de prata. “Nós passamos muito tempo juntos durante o verão, nós sempre temos o Campeonato Europeu, o Campeonato do Mundo ou os Jogos Olímpicos. Então nós passamos cerca de três ou quatro meses junto, todos os dias. Nós nos sentimos como uma família. Então, quando se perde alguém como Drazen, é um momento muito difícil.”

Embora sua vida e sua carreira tenham sido encerradas prematuramente, seu impacto e lugar na história do basquetebol continuarão a vivos por gerações. E não apenas oficialmente no Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, onde ele foi entronizado em 2002, mas nos corações e nas lembranças daqueles que tiveram a felicidade de vê-lo jogar.

Nenad Krstic quer permanecer no Nets

Segundo agente do jogador, o pivô deseja permanecer em New jersey

 

Após o ala Bostjan Nachbar demonstrar interesse de ficar em New Jersey, agora quem deseja renovar seu contrato com o New Jersey Nets é o pivô Nenad Krstic.

 

Quem deu a informação foi o agente de Krstic, que será Free Agent restrito ao final desta temporada. Apesar da declaração de seu agente, o jogador diz tentar não pensar sobre renovação neste momento da temporada.

 

"Ainda restam 11 jogos na temporada regular e nós estamos buscando a classificação para os playoffs. Então, se eu penso em renovação de contrato, é mais um problema para a minha cabeça", disse o pivô. "Eu realmente tento não pensar nisso, mas é difícil, porque é algo que sempre está na minha cabeça", finalizou o pivô.

 

Em 34 jogos nesta temporada, o jogador tem médias de 6.4 pontos e 4.2 rebotes.

After three years at Maryland, Williams decided to leave for the NBA. The New Jersey Nets selected him third overall in the 1981 NBA Draft, behind Olympic teammates Aguirre and Thomas. In his first season with the Nets, he averaged 15.5 points and led the team with 12.3 rebounds per game, helping New Jersey win 20 more games (a 44-38 win-loss record) than the previous year and earning 1982 Rookie of the Year honors. Williams established himself as a premier player at the power forward position over the next eight seasons with the Nets; in six of those he was ranked among the best three rebounders in the league, never averaging less than twelve rebounds per game. This period (1984) featured the Nets' best playoff effort since merging into the NBA from the ABA in 1977 - their first second-round appearance, where they lost to the Milwaukee Bucks; not until 2002 did the Nets get past the first round of the playoffs again.

One of the game's most relentless and enduring rebounders, Charles Linwood "Buck" Williams has been a top power forward for more than a dozen NBA seasons. He is one of only seven players to achieve 16,000 points and 13,000 rebounds in his NBA career and ranked fourth on the NBA's all-time list in games played (1,307), eighth in minutes (42,464) and 10th in rebounds (13,017).

Sharp Offense Paces Nets

 

The Nets didn’t seem to mind playing at Indiana’s fast pace, scoring early and often and picking up their second straight win Wednesday night at the IZOD Center. The Nets led by 13 early on and by as many as 16 late in the second quarter. But the Pacers are a team that can catch up quickly, and that’s what they did. It was a tie game by the middle of the third period, but Indiana never took the lead, the Nets scored 21 points in the final 4 1/2 minutes of the quarter to take back control, and they were able to withstand any runs the Pacers made in the fourth. The Nets shot 54 percent and had five players with at least 18 points, led by Josh Boone, who scored a career-high 26. Devin Harris had a career-high 15 assists to go a long with his 22 points, Richard Jefferson had seven dimes of his own, Vince Carter had 14 boards and Boki Nachbar scored 15 of his 18 points in the third quarter. Atlanta beat Milwaukee, so the Hawks remain 1/2 game ahead of the Nets for the eighth spot in the East.

Mas com 4 dos 5 jogadores que iniciaram a jogo, a marcar mais de 20 pontos. E com alguns recordes quebrados, la conseguimos, gracas a enorme qualidade ofensiva, vencer o jogo.

Thorn says Frank is returning

 

 

This doesn't exactly constitute news, other than the fact that Rod Thorn has decided to finally muzzle all coach-haters and speculators of Blogistan.

 

But for the first time, the Nets president declared that Lawrence Frank will be his coach next season -- which was widely assumed all along -- and he adds that not even a visit to the lottery will change that reality.

 

"I don't have any thoughts or ideas of replacing him at all," Thorn said yesterday. "He's done a good job for us, and I'm sure he'll continue to do so in the future."

 

Frank, of course, hasn't been a very popular coach, judging by the crowd's reaction to the very mention of his name at Izod Center. A year ago, he could point to a number of successes that would make his detractors shut their traps: Numerous players had career years, the young guys developed at an acceptable rate, and he got a team crippled by five surgeries into the Final Eight.

 

But this year? Those detractors believe they have enough ammunition to sink the Teaneck native.

 

Thorn is blunt: No, they don't.

 

"We've had a really tough year, on a lot of levels. The Jason Kidd situation made things difficult," he said, perhaps implying that the season went sideways as soon as the captain lost interest in November. "We had injuries like everybody else. This hasn't been an easy year for anyone on our team, particularly for coaches, with all the stuff that's gone on around here."

 

So Frank stays, and with two years left on his contract, he gets another shot at turning the team around.

 

Yes, even if they don't make the playoffs.

 

"I don't see anything that can transpire that would change my mind," Thorn said. "I got a call from a writer the other day who said he's writing a column that the coach should be fired. So I know it's out there in the media, and from fan e-mails. But that's not going to influence me one way or the other. I know the job Lawrence does for us."

By the end of next week, Kerry Kittles will slip another rung on the record-book ladder. Entering last night, Vince Carter was 160 points shy of passing Kittles (7,096) for fourth place on the Nets' all-time scoring list. Buck Williams (10,440), Richard Jefferson (8,268 entering last night) and Kidd are the top three. Carter wasn't even in the top 10 before the season began.
