Eric Dier is 16, 6' 2", a proper, English centre-back, powerful, good in the air, ferocious in the tackle. Except he can play football too. Never once, he says, can he recall hoofing the ball out of defence.

 

To do so, he reckons, would be to betray the whole essence of the game. Pass it: that's how he was brought up. But then Eric plays for Sporting Lisbon. And his views on the difference between the way young players are developed in Portugal and England are telling.

 

Dier is a wanted player. Umbro signed him up on a four-year deal recently. Lots of clubs in England have been aware of his progress for some time. They'd love to have him over here, a ball-playing, passing centre-back comfortable in possession: there hasn't been an Englishman like that since Rio Ferdinand. But Dier doesn't want to leave Portugal just yet. Not until he is at least 20. And when you hear his explanation you can understand why.

 

Five years ago, he explains, when Jose Mourinho was at Chelsea, there were three young Portuguese players he targeted for Chelsea's academy. Two of them took up their countryman's offer to join his Stamford Bridge revolution and went to London aged 16. The third stayed behind. Five years on, the one who stayed is in Sporting's first team. And the other two are without a club, discarded by Chelsea despite the richness of their potential.

 

So Dier wants to stay at Sporting, the club that spotted him when he was playing for a club on the Algarve where his dad was a tennis coach, because he reckons he has a far better chance there of becoming a professional footballer. He believes he is far more likely to thrive in a place where there is no glass ceiling preventing youngsters from taking the step up to being a first team player.

 

With England's team faring so poorly at the World Cup, the post mortems have, as usual, focussed on the development of players. As it happens, the Premier League academies do a good job. Most employ enlightened coaches. At places like Manchester United, Middlesbrough and Manchester City the concentration is all on technique and skill. The England U17 team won the recent European championships playing delightfully composed and accomplished football.

 

The problem is not their work. It is how they are perceived within their own organisation. Take Liverpool. Despite spending millions a year on their academy, the club has not seen a youngster graduate from there to the first team since Steven Gerrard. Surely, you think, there must be someone there better than Lucas. And there probably is. Potentially. But with the financial pressure to succeed so enormous, no Liverpool manager has had the luxury to risk blooding a youngster. They have to buy ready-made. And so the players in the academy are simply never given the chance to see if they have the right stuff to make it at the top.

 

There was no bigger indictment of the English way than in the World Cup final itself. Playing for Spain with grace and power was a player whose game was largely learned on the playing fields of Carrington. Gerard Pique was at Manchester United's academy for four years as a teenager. But even a manager as renowned for the production of youth players as Alex Ferguson put a barrier on Pique's growth, not daring to pitch him regularly into the first team.After no more than 12 first team appearances across three seasons, he left for a club more likely to give him a real chance. Two years after leaving, he is the proud possessor of a Champions League and World Cup winner's medal. And to get him back now, Ferguson would have to fork out millions.

 

Alan Hansen was widely pilloried for it at the time, but the fact is, 15 years after he said it, the view that you will win nothing with kids still pervades English football. No-one trusts their own resources, preferring to buy off the peg foreigners instead, paying no heed to the consequent damage done to the national game - and the national team - as a result.

 

In four years time, when he is 20 and dominating Sporting's defence, the clubs in the Premier League will be fighting a pitched battle to bring Eric Biel home from Portugal. No doubt huge money will be involved. But the sad fact is, if they had had him as a youngster, the very same clubs would almost certainly have squandered his talent.

O Dier que fique no Sporting que lá tem condições para evoluir. Muito bom jogador.

Já agora, os 3 jogadores que ele fala são o Fábio Ferreira, o Ricardo Fernandes e o Adrien Silva. O Fábio, por incrível que pareça, esteve a jogar aqui no Paio Pires e foi dispensado, porque haviam muitos jogadores. Foi então para o Seixal onde pegou de estaca, foi depois observado pelo Sporting, e acabou mesmo por ir para lá. Tornou-se um jogador completamente diferente. Fiquei estupefacto com a evolução dele. Depois foi para o Chelsea, e chegou mesmo a treinar com a equipa principal. Mas quando o seu contrato acabou, só teve um convite do Esmoriz, que é onde está agora. É curioso comparar o seu trajecto com o do Adrien. Isto diz muito da academia do SCP.
