Yet these low, insignificant coral-islets stand and are victorious: for here another power, as an antagonist, takes part in the contest. The organic forces separate the atoms of carbonate of lime, one by one, from the foaming breakers, and unite them into a symmetrical structure. Let the hurricane tear up its thousand huge fragments; yet what will that tell against the accumulated labour of myriads of architects at work night and day, month after month? Thus do we see the soft and gelatinous body of a polypus, through the agency of the vital laws, conquering the great mechanical power of the waves of an ocean which neither the art of man nor the inanimate works of nature could successfully resist."

A destruição de alguns corais não é a minha principal preocupação, especialmente quando a vida de dois seres humanos esteve em risco. Este último aspeto é o mais preocupante e ignorando que as bombas tenham sido largadas onde foram, ninguém deveria ter dúvidas de que algo de muito grave falhou no planeamento e execução do exercício, quando a vida dos pilotos foi colocada em causa caso a carga das aeronaves não fosse diminuída.

 

Não deixa de ser negativo que a grande barreira de coral australiana, património mundial da UNESCO, uma formação natural que exemplifica o que de mais belo a Natureza consegue criar, tenha sido manchada por despojos bélicos. Um ecossistema tão singular, tão rico em biodiversidade (baleias, dugongo, tartarugas, etc.), onde a formação de corais é essencial para garantir prosperidade, uma construção orgânica que simbolicamente representa cooperação e união para um fim comum e imensamente superior ao de cada indivíduo, algo que a espécie humana deveria ambicionar, seja agora contrastado com um símbolo de destruição. Esta antítese é deveras irónica.
