An Open Letter To Denmark

 

An Open (and Closed) Letter to Denmark (or at least the viral chunk of it with access to my FB posts).

 

As this is a letter to Danes, let me begin illogically with a brief breakdown of what happened yesterday for the benefit of the Brits. There was an election over here. The person who was Prime Minister yesterday [Helle Thorning Schmidt, photo, ed.] increased the number of votes and seats for her party in the election. She is no longer Prime Minister and has resigned as leader of her party. The person who will almost certainly be the new Prime Minister saw the vote for his party collapse to a point where they are now only the 3rd largest.( He had been Prime Minister once before, not through winning an election, it was passed to him Gordon Brown style. He promptly lost his first election). He will almost certainly form a government with the party that has overtaken him in votes. They are called The Danish Peoples Party. You have probably heard that type of political party name before. Take a wild guess which “people” they are a party for. Yep, bang on, white skin, blue eyed, blond haired people with a fondness for sandwiches with no bread on top. So for all of you that complained most bitterly at the inequities of the UK first-past-the-post electoral system………………….welcome to the world of PR.

 

Now,on to those that I share oxygen with now as opposed to then. I bloat with emotions of respect, admiration and affection for the citizens of the country that I now call my home. A more civil, civilized, kindly, thoughtful, tolerant and intellectually rigorous society would in my view be hard to find. And it is therefore with a heavy heart that I feel compelled to write that many of the qualities for which you (I cant say “we”, I don’t deserve that credit) are rightly famed across the globe, are being eroded (at least in the short term) by many of your actions. I arrived over 15 years ago having left a chorus of opinion that I would be arriving in a cradle of liberal democracy, a country rightly lauded for its social, health, education and integration policies. These extraordinary achievements are in danger of being forgotten in the wake of this undignified scramble to appear most strident in attitude to issues of race, immigration and asylum. You are busy defining yourselves in the wider world by your collective attitudes to these challenges. I am fully aware that a significant % of the population are opposed to the statements and policies being voiced, but at a time when the largest party in the administration is fundamentally an openly racist organization, the conclusions being reached by other states are inevitable.

 

And, speaking as an outsider looking closely in, I have a theory as to why this issue troubles this small nation so greatly. It is not to do with increases in immigration, jobs, culture clashes, alleged issues with new arrivals refusing to adapt to “Danish ways” (whatever the hell that means), crime or even problems with religious dogmas (I myself strongly support the need for liberal democracies to stand much firmer against religious pre-enlightenment – I believe the need to emancipate women, to allow children to become adult before requiring to be identified by a faith, equal rights for gay citizens etc are all far more pressing than the desire to avoid “offending strongly held religious beliefs”. I might have a strongly held faith that there is a moon monster living amongst the daffodils in my garden, but I want a society where free speech gives all citizens the absolute right to inform me that I am a f**king idiot for believing so).

 

But the core reason behind the frustration is this. Danes, in their own quiet, modest way, are inordinately proud of having created what has been viewed by others as a model society. Held as an example across the continents as a template for a free democratic state. And yet their performance and results in the area of multi culturalism can best be described as a catastrophic failure. This frustrates Danes of all political hues greatly. It is a Big Problem. They cant Fix It. This results in frustration, a groundswell in reactionary views (blame the victims) and ultimately the election result that we saw yesterday. Now I would not claim to know the answers to the challenges faced in these areas, but I can tell you something with utter confidence. Kristian Thulesen Dahl and his merry band of fearmongers and isolationists are not it.

 

As the campaigns for this election trundled forward, the level of political discourse (both from FB users and the press) really did topple into the septic tank of contempt, hate, vile personalized sexism and character assassination that is, I am sorry to say, a group of symptoms of a society moving into Dark Days. It is also a result that for me, writing as an immigrant, left me last night sleeping just that small fraction less soundly in my bed. Questions going through my mind such as “I am not a Danish citizen, am I less secure now ? I was unemployed for a time last year, what if that happens again – am I at risk ?”. There may possibly be some that have just read that and thought the following “Steve has nothing to worry about, he is not the sort of immigrant that there is a problem with”. And if anyone thought something similar to that……….then shame on you. Shame on you for believing that people from one land or culture should be any more or less welcome than another. And shame on you for not knowing that throughout human history, when power is given (or has been taken) by people that single out a particular group and blame them for societies ills, it never ends there. (And while we are on the subject of shame, why is there constant surprise that the DF vote is higher than opinion polls suggest ? It is entirely logical that a larger % of voters that support them would lie about this in public – it’s a dirty secret between them , the ballot box and their own conscience. And long may that be true, it is one of the few shards of light in this whole sorry affair).

 

I accept that I am looking with the eyes of a guest but I hear or read so often the vitriol of those that look around them and seem to see only bug-eyed imams demanding Islamic law, potential terrorists, schools with different first languages, ghettos, threats to “Danishness” from all sides. This is what I see, I see the people that have got up early enough that they have nearly finished cleaning the streets I am cycling to work on, the people that have cleaned the toilets and washed the floors where I work ,the people that bring my family the food we order when we are too tired to do it ourselves (if my wife reads this she will laugh at the use of the word “ourselves”), that sell us the beer at 11, the milk at midnight.

 

When I write these occasional rants and diatribes, I invariably tap them out as a stream of consciousness and push Send before I have a chance to convince myself to amend/adapt/tone down/duck out. Today I have read this through before sending, it felt too relevant (at least to myself) to merely put it up here as a slice of polemic or even a call to arms. I have thought about the offence I could be causing to those who were born in the country in which I am a (hopefully) permanent visitor. But I also know that there are many for whom this country is their place of birth who are treated as if that is absolutely not the case. So, after due consideration, and taking into account my criticisms of the fall in standards of political debate, my view is this – if you are offended by the words of this particular immigrant and feel that he should keep his nose away from questions of how Denmark should behave, then I have a suggestion. Get a ticket, stand in line………..and kiss my white arse.

Não é ser de esquerda, mas não deixa de o ser. A ideia é há setores que são geridos pelo Estado que podem bem ser geridos por privados e privatizando-os o Estado liberta recursos para investir em setores que realmente distinguem a esquerda da direita liberal: investimento na redução de desigualdades e criação de oportunidades, nomeadamente educação, saúde e investimento reprodutivo que possibilite a criação de emprego e promova o crescimento em tempos de crise.

E porque razão é que um desses sectores é o dos transportes? É que honestamente não consigo entender o que é que se ganha em concessionar/privatizar, assim como ainda não percebi o que se ganhou com a privatização de empresas como a EDP ou os CTT. Não metíamos lá dinheiro, agora não recebemos os dividendos e eu, enquanto consumidor, ganhei zero.

 

No caso dos transportes, convido-te a analisar o caso da Fertagus, que tem um quase monopólio no transporte público da Margem Sul para Lisboa (uma vez que os barcos de Cacilhas e Seixal não têm a vantagem de deixar as pessoas no centro de Lisboa como faz o comboio) com quase 70 mil passageiros diários, com os preços dos passes e bilhetes altíssimos (eu pagava mais de 83 € pelo passe de comboio a partir do Fogueteiro + metro e agora pago pouco mais de 50 € pelo Navegante) e que, mesmo assim, tem resultados operacionais negativos. Entre 2005 e 2010 lucrou 33,4 M €, com o Estado a pagar 102,8 M € em indemnizações compensatórias. No fundo, o Estado andou a entregar dinheiro aos accionistas.

Posto tudo isto é óbvio que empresas que fornecem serviços fundamentais aos Portugueses vão funcionar muito melhor na nossa óptica se tiverem como objectivo o lucro dos accionistas em vez de prestar um serviço de qualidade e acessível aos Portugueses . Como é que não percebes isto fds...

E é sempre bom deixar o exemplo da EDP e de mais uma ou outra que até davam lucro, sem referenciar as dezenas de companhias estatais que davam prejuizo (pois já ninguem fala da PT que é um buraco ainda maior do que quando foi privatizada ou da BRISA que hoje devido a ser privada conseguiu tornar-se na segunda maior operadora da Europa a nivel de estradas)...é o que dá só ler o esquerda.net

A questão não é o que tu ganhas, é o que o Estado ganha em poupança ou receita que pode canalizar para outros setores. Por exemplo com a concessão da carris e metro de Lisboa, o Estado vai poupar 25 milhões de euros ano sem aumento de preços para além da inflação e sem diminuição de rotas. Se realmente for assim, e é preciso que o Estado regule para que assim seja então é uma poupança importante. As linhas vermelhas são os pontos que da proposta Syriza que os credores não aceitam. Salta a vista a eliminação de benficíos sociais de pensionistas mais pobres e aumento do IVA. Reestruturação da dívida aparentemente é mais ou menos aceite pelo FMI mas liminarmente recusado pela Alemanha.

Eu não tenho ilusões, a troika vai deixar a Grécia cair.

E onde é que estão essas poupanças e receitas com as privatizações que referi e outras? Quer dizer, receitas até houve, mas foram engolidas pela dívida galopante que temos.

 

Essas poupanças são obtidas de que forma? É que o Governo não explicou e eu tenho imensas dúvidas de que seja à custa de meros actos de gestão eficiente que não incluam racionalização de rotas e nº de funcionários. É que faz-me confusão que a gestão pública nunca consiga atingir os níveis de eficiência de gestão que os privados apregoam. Porque será...

 

Mais, a Avanza vai receber mais de 1000 milhões pelos 8 anos do contrato de concessão.

SIC Radical estreia polémica série documental que chocou a Inglaterra

 

A polémica série documental que chocou a Inglaterra e suscitou o debate sobre o tema dos apoios sociais na Câmara dos Comuns, chega a Portugal, à SIC Radical!

 

Benefits Street (“Os Beneficados”) é uma série documental britânica que foi exibida em Inglaterra pela primeira vez em Janeiro de 2014. O programa filmou as vidas dos moradores da James Turner Street, em Winson Green, Birmingham. Os jornais britânicos, incluindo o Daily Mail e o The Guardian confirmaram que 90% destes moradores viviam às custas de benefícios sociais. Em cada episódio, os espectadores ingleses puderam ver estes beneficiários de apoios sociais nas suas vida quotidianas, muitas vezes afirmando-se como totalmente dependentes dos pagamentos do Estado e sem qualquer motivação para procurar emprego.

 

Benefits Street gerou muita controvérsia em Inglaterra, principalmente junto da polícia britânica, do canal Channel 4 que emitiu o programa e também da entidade reguladora de comunicação inglesa, a Ofcom, que recebeu inúmeras reclamações.

 

Muitos dos moradores participantes nas filmagens afirmaram ter sido enganados pelos realizadores do documentário, dando esta polémica origem a uma investigação por parte da Ofcom para averiguar se o programa teria violado o Regulamento de Transmissões da televisão inglesa. No final, acabou por se concluir que as suas regras não tinham sido quebradas e o programa avançou mesmo para uma segunda temporada, em exibição no Reino Unido.

 

Os produtores de Benefits Street defenderam a série, argumentando que a reação que suscitou justifica só por si a sua produção. O programa foi mencionado na Câmara dos Comuns e espoletou um debate político sobre o tema dos benefícios sociais. Uma série de programas foram encomendados por outros canais sobre este tema, mas o Channel 4 atingiu os seus mais altos índices de audiência desde 2012 com este documentário.

Nas próximas horas a ala radical do Syriza deve pronunciar-se sobre o que está a ser discutido e tudo indica que vão protestar contra o acordo. Em Atenas, alguns milhares de pessoas estão nas ruas a protestar contra um possível acordo, muitos são do KKE(PCP da zona) e outros milhares pertencem a um grupo de esquerda formado em 2009 que nasce de um ajuntamento de 10 organizações e partidos chamado Antarsa que se define como: ''Front of the anticapitalist, revolutionary, communist left and radical ecology''.

For six months now the Greek government has been waging a battle in conditions of unprecedented economic suffocation to implement the mandate you gave us on January 25.

 

The mandate we were negotiating with our partners was to end the austerity and to allow prosperity and social justice to return to our country.

 

It was a mandate for a sustainable agreement that would respects both democracy and common European rules and lead to the final exit from the crisis.

 

Throughout this period of negotiations, we were asked to implement the agreements concluded by the previous governments with the Memoranda, although they categorically condemned by the Greek people in the recent elections.

 

However, not for a moment did we think of surrendering, that is to betray your trust.

 

After five months of hard bargaining, our partners, unfortunately, issued at the Eurogroup the day before yesterday an ultimatum to Greek democracy and to the Greek people.

 

An ultimatum that is contrary to the founding principles and values of Europe, the values of our common European project.

 

They asked the Greek government to accept a proposal that accumulates a new unsustainable burden on the Greek people and undermines the recovery of the Greek economy and society, a proposal that not only perpetuates the state of uncertainty but accentuates even more the social inequalities.

 

The proposal of institutions includes: measures leading to further deregulation of the labor market, pension cuts, further reductions in public sector wages and an increase in VAT on food, dining and tourism, while eliminating tax breaks for the Greek islands.

 

These proposals directly violate the European social and fundamental rights: they show that concerning work, equality and dignity, the aim of some of the partners and institutions is not a viable and beneficial agreement for all parties but the humiliation the entire Greek people.

 

These proposals mainly highlight the insistence of the IMF in the harsh and punitive austerity and make more timely than ever the need for the leading European powers to seize the opportunity and take initiatives which will finally bring to a definitive end the Greek sovereign debt crisis, a crisis affecting other European countries and threatening the very future of European integration.

 

Fellow Greeks,

 

Right now weighs on our shoulders the historic responsibility towards the struggles and sacrifices of the Greek people for the consolidation of democracy and national sovereignty. Our responsibility for the future of our country.

 

And this responsibility requires us to answer the ultimatum on the basis of the sovereign will of the Greek people.

 

A short while ago at the Cabinet meeting I suggested the organization of a referendum, so that the Greek people are able to decide in a sovereign way.

 

The suggestion was unanimously accepted.

 

Tomorrow the House of Representatives will be urgently convened to ratify the proposal of the Cabinet for a referendum next Sunday, July 5th on the question of the acceptance or the rejection of the proposal of institutions.

 

I have already informed about my decision the President of France and the Chancellor of Germany, the President of the ECB, and tomorrow my letter will formally ask the EU leaders and institutions to extend for a few days the current program in order for the Greek people to decide, free from any pressure and blackmail, as required by the Constitution of our country and the democratic tradition of Europe.

 

Fellow Greeks,

 

To the blackmailing of the ultimatum that asks us to accept a severe and degrading austerity without end and without any prospect for a social and economic recovery, I ask you to respond in a sovereign and proud way, as the history of the Greek people commands.

 

To authoritarianism and harsh austerity, we will respond with democracy, calmly and decisively.

 

Greece, the birthplace of democracy will send a resounding democratic response to Europe and the world.

 

I am personally committed to respect the outcome of your democratic choice, whatever that is.

 

And I'm absolutely confident that your choice will honor the history of our country and send a message of dignity to the world.

 

In these critical moments, we all have to remember that Europe is the common home of peoples. That in Europe there are no owners and guests.

 

Greece is and will remain an integral part of Europe and Europe is an integral part of Greece. But without democracy, Europe will be a Europe without identity and without a compass.

 

I invite you all to display national unity and calm in order to take the right decisions.

 

For us, for future generations, for the history of the Greeks.

 

For the sovereignty and dignity of our people.
