Barclays will not renew £40m-a-year Premier League sponsorship when current deal expires at the end of 2015-16 season

Premier League sponsors Barclays will not renew their £40million-a-year deal when the current agreement expires at the end of the 2015-16 season.

The bank agreed a £120m three-year deal in 2012 for the present rights - an increase of almost 50 per cent on their previous £82m contract.

But with Sky and BT Sport paying a record £5.1billion for TV rights from the start of the 2016 season, Barclays fear the cost of the next sponsorship will also rise considerably.

Barclays have sponsored the Premier League since 2001 when they first used the sponsorship to promote their Barclaycard brand.

As well as the cost of the sponsorship, they must also consider the costs of promoting it through advertising, public relations and social media.

The popularity of the Premier League abroad is seen as a major factor behind the bank's decision to continue with their sponsorship for almost 15 years.

With games broadcast into 650 million homes in 175 countries, Barclays have used their agreements to promote themselves throughout the world, particularly in Africa and Asia

Sunderland fans raise £2,000 to buy flowers for Dick Advocaat’s wife

Sunderland fans have raised over £2,000 to buy flowers for Dick Advocaat’s wife after the Dutch manager had a change of heart and decided to stay with the club.

Advocaat kept the Mackems up after succeeding Gus Poyet on a short-term deal but at the age of 67 he had promised his wife he would retire this summer.

On Thursday, however, it was announced he had changed his mind and signed a new one-year deal to stay with Sunderland.

Their fans immediately started a campaign to raise £150 for a bouquet of flowers on the gofundme website but at the time of writing that had far exceeded expectations.

The fans have promised to split the surplus between the SAFC Foundation and a charity of Mrs Advocaat’s choice.

12M por ano? f*da-se. :medinho:

Manchester United slammed for keeping disabled Arsenal fans from their seats... for fears their walking sticks could be weapons

An equality watchdog has written to the Premier League and Manchester United over concerns that that disabled fans had their mobility aids confiscated by stewards.

The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) acted following reports that several Arsenal fans, including one supporter in his 80s, were prevented from taking their seats at Old Trafford because they were using walking sticks - which stewards claim could have been used as weapons.

The supporters, attending the league match on May 17, were told they would not be allowed to watch the game since they had failed to notify the club of their supportive equipment - saying the walking sticks represented a health and safety risk

Only the intervention of the Greater Manchester allowed the supporters to eventually take their seats, although stewards confiscated their walking sticks until the end of the game.

Consequently, the Disability News Service asked the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) to contact the club and the Premier League and have not ruled out taking legal action.

Manchester United have been repeatedly criticised for failing to provide the recommended number of spaces for wheelchair-users at Old Trafford. The club admitted last August that it only had 120 wheelchair user spaces, when official guidance states that there should be at least 280.

A United spokesman said: 'Our club policy is to encourage any supporters who require the use of crutches or a walking aid to contact the club in advance to ensure each case is adequately risk assessed and that we can ensure safe evacuation in the event of emergency.

On some rare occasions, we have also experienced such devices being used as weapons.

'This policy is displayed at the turnstiles and on our website. The disability liaison officers from both clubs also communicate this policy in advance.

'Where supporters arrive without having pre-notified us of the need for such devices, our stewarding team performs a dynamic risk assessment which usually involves finding a solution to accompany the supporter to their seat and storing the walking device during the game.

'At the game in question, a significant number of visiting supporters who had not pre-notified the club arrived with walking devices.

'Therefore the above system was put into place. No person was refused entry to the stadium.'

When asked whether the club would be apologising to the disabled fans, and whether it was concerned that it might have breached the Equality Act, the spokesman refused to comment further.

An Arsenal spokesman said: 'We are sorry to hear of the difficulties experienced by our disabled supporters and will be working closely with our travelling fans to avoid any similar situations next season.' He declined to comment further.

Liverpool close to signing Bolton goalkeeper Adam Bogdan on free transfer

Adam Bogdan is set to sign for Liverpool on a free transfer from Bolton.

The Hungary international goalkeeper is expected to complete the move to Merseyside next month.

It dashes Neil Lennon's hopes of keeping him at the Macron Stadium

Bogdan, who is out of contract after eight years at Bolton, produced a fabulous performance during a goalless draw at Anfield in the FA Cup, in January.

He then damaged ankle ligaments in training days later and missed the replay but Liverpool has taken note, as reported by Sportsmail at the time.

Brendan Rodgers and the Anfield scouting team have kept a close eye on the 27-year-old's fitness and form, keen to apply pressure to established No 1 Simon Mignolet.

Andy Lonergan started the last campaign as Bolton's first-choice 'keeper but Bogdan impressed Lennon, who took charge in October, and forced his way into the team.

The Hungarian returned to full fitness and was back in the team at the end of the season but has been unable to reach an agreement with a club he joined in 2007.

'We would like him here next season,' said manager Lennon, in April. 'That would be a very good start to our rebuilding process.'

A £1.2million bid from Mainz was rejected last summer and the German club retained an interest.

Stuttgart and Hannover were also keen. As were Stoke who seem set to lose Asmir Begovic, but the chance to move to Liverpool and to challenge Mignolet had obvious appeal.

Liverpool have already agreed a deal to sign England international James Milner on a free transfer from Manchester City.

Radamel Falcao encourages Chelsea bid as Manchester United flop says he wants to stay in the Premier League

Manchester United flop Radamel Falcao has encouraged Chelsea to make a move for him this summer by admitting he wants to remain in the Premier League.

The Colombia international only found the target four times for Louis van Gaal's side during a disappointing season-long loan from Monaco this season.

United decided not to take up the option to make the deal permanent and Falcao is now looking for a new club this summer ahead of the new campaign.

Chelsea have held talks with Monaco about a possible deal, with the French club looking to recoup around £25million for the striker.

And Falcao, who will captain Colombia at the Copa America this summer, has further encouraged a bid from the Premier League champions by revealing he is keen to remain in England.
