Sim.

Meat Pies and freshly cut grass fill the air at Broadhurst Park as FC United of Manchester prepare to take on Benfica. It’s the first official friendly match at their new ground 10 years after forming a break-away club following the Glazers’ take over of Manchester United. On the same day that the football world bowed its head in shame at the FIFA scandals and Sepp Blatter’s re-election, there is a small glimmer of hope just north of downtown Manchester.

Tales of George Best and other Manchester United greats fill the walls of the clubhouse that looks over the pristine, timber cladded stadium. Flags and banners of camaraderie from Manchester, to Buenos Aires, all the way to Shanghai are draped along the every wall and stand in sight. Parents sharing a pint as their kids run around the ground, teenagers flirting in the standing sections, and the occasional tinge of a foreign language or accent that serves of a constant reminder of just how many people identify with this club. The DIY, grass-roots culture behind FCUM, makes them impeccably cool.

Being here, it is easy to forget about the cold environment endemic in Premier League grounds. From one of the biggest terraces in non-league football, to providing a community classroom, cultivating wildlife, and harbouring ambitions of a microbrewery as well as an NHS medical centre, Moston’s Broadhurst Park is cut from a very different fabric than Old Trafford.

As the teams lined up on the pitch, the Benfica players looked surprised at the atmosphere in the ground. The East stand, known as the “The Board Walk”, was on its feet in ovation singing the fan owned supporters anthem to the tune of Take Me Home Country Road. On the opposite end, a small contingent of about 30 Benfica fans lit off flares and smoke, adding an element of colour to the festivities. Many in the main stand struggled to hold back tears as a decade of fund raising and community building finally bore its fruit.

The fixture was a re-match of the 1968 European Cup Final in which United won 1-0 in front of 90,000 people at Wembley. In a reversal of the script Benfica won 0-1, but this time, the result was of little importance. The representative squad of Benfica B and youth players, “have never seen anything like this,” said manager and former Benfica defender Helder Cristovao.

After the match the players from both teams ate in the clubhouse amongst all the supporters. Benfica were welcomed to a variety of meat pies and cheerful Mancunian banter as the club’s general manager, Andy Walsh, stood up their table and gave a rousing speech, to the nearly 400 people present. “We told them about the club before we left, but not even I could have imagined something like this.” Helder continued, “This feels like one big family has welcomed us. It is really important especially for the young players to see this because it is hard to find these moments at big clubs.”

As he responded, one gentleman approached the table to ask about the score of Benfica’s cup final match back in Portugal. The players and technical staff all looked at each other nervously, realizing that no one had bothered to check. But yet, this is the nature of things at FC United of Manchester. When you’re here, you can truly forget about everything else.

Maybe it was the warmth and pride of a community that had built their own ground and hosted the mighty Benfica, or maybe the players just didn’t have any cell phone coverage. Either way, as the FCUM keeper approached the table with the good news of a 2-1 for Benfica, the entire room let out a cheer. The Benfica players grinned at each other, realizing that they were a part of something more important. After all, a cup final can happen every year. This was history!

FC United of Manchester: the success story that proves what fans can achieve

Excelente peça do The Guardian mas destaco estes três parágrafos em particular:

Jerome Wright, who came to the club in 2006 after suffering rejection at 16 by Oldham Athletic, has played more than 300 games for FC United. He said he and other players have been offered much more money by other non-league clubs than the £150 per week they are paid on average, but they stay because they feel valued.

“I’ve been offered money which would change my life financially,” Wright said, gazing at the new stadium. “But I believe with all my heart I have had an experience here better than most footballers in the world.”

(...)

At the trial game one supporter, Michelle Noonan, called over to Brown. “I can’t stop crying,” she said. Asked why, she was quiet for a while. Then she replied: “Because I can’t believe that out of so much anger and hatred we have made something so good.”

'Football is not a game show': FC United of Manchester criticise BBC

Broadcaster had asked to move Saturday’s FA Cup match

FC United’s board ‘gave a resounding no to this request'

FC United of Manchester have criticised the BBC after they were asked to rearrange their FA Cup fourth round qualifying tie on Saturday so it can be streamed live.

The club – set up by dissatisfied supporters of Manchester United in 2005 – face an away tie against West Midlands side Sporting Khalsa on Saturday with kick-off scheduled for 3pm.

The BBC wrote to FC United to ask if they would consider rescheduling the tie for earlier in the day to enable them to trial a “brand new BBC Mobile Match of The Day Live experience”. However, that suggestion received short shrift, with a statement on the club’s website under the headline, “Football is a sport not a television game show”, confirming that the request had been rejected.

“This latest idea included disruption to the pre-match preparations of club volunteers and the competing teams, interruptions to substitutes warming up and interference with the team managers’ match management. The board gave a resounding no to this request,” read the statement.

“FC United is not intrinsically opposed to the re-arrangement of a fixture time, provided that it meets with the approval of and benefits the respective clubs and their supporters.

“But as a public service broadcaster the BBC should be taking a lead by promoting the game without causing additional disruption to match going supporters instead of trying to ape or outdo some of the worst excesses of their competitors.

“If BBC viewers would like to understand the fans’ experience at a football game there are numerous real life games at every level throughout the country and the easiest way for TV viewers to access the real fans’ experience is to go along to a match. For a more in depth experience they could volunteer like many non-league fans do week in and week out.”

In response, a BBC spokesman said: “Our aim was, and remains, to showcase the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup in a unique and innovative way, taking the audience closer to a game and behind the scenes of a match - also starting our coverage of the world’s oldest cup competition earlier than ever before.

“We will only do this with the full backing of both clubs involved in any tie broadcast.”

The Guardian

Football is a sport not a television game show

The FC United Board thought fans would like to share our frustration and bemusement at the request we received on Friday 16 Oct 2015 from the BBC, via the FA, to move the kick off time of our FA Cup game against Sporting Khalsa to enable a “brand new BBC Mobile Match of The Day Live experience”.

This latest idea included disruption to the pre-match preparations of club volunteers and the competing teams, interruptions to substitutes warming up and interference with the team managers’ match management.

The FC United Board gave a resounding ‘no’ to this request. Match-going supporters should not have to be inconvenienced for the benefit of those who rarely, if at all, attend matches.

FC United is not intrinsically opposed to the re-arrangement of a fixture time, provided that it meets with the approval of and benefits the respective clubs and their supporters. In 2007, members of FC United voted in favour of entering the FA Cup and acknowledged the competitions rules and TV contracts.

That aside the whole “Mobile Match of The Day Live experience” should have been canned at inception by any BBC Sports manager with an understanding of the game. As a public service broadcaster the BBC should be taking a lead by promoting the game without causing additional disruption to match going supporters instead of trying to ape or outdo some of the worst excesses of their competitors.

If BBC viewers would like to understand the fans’ experience at a football game there are numerous real life games at every level throughout the country and the easiest way for TV viewers to access the real fans’ experience is to go along to a match. For a more in depth experience they could volunteer like many non-league fans do week in and week out.

The FA, as the governing body of football in this country, appear to be encouraging ways to cash in on the fans’ experience whilst treating the supporters as the least important commodity in the game. We call upon the FA to remember that football is a sporting competition and the associated drama comes from the highs and lows of the game itself. It does not reflect well on the custodians of our game that they would devalue the sporting integrity of their flagship competition by encouraging TV presenters to interfere with those in the dugouts or changing rooms when they are working to produce the best competitive elements of the game. Nor should TV have access to substitutes when warming up, because those players are athletes preparing properly to be able to compete at their best.

TV exposure and the revenue it generates are important to football. However, we believe that the balance has swung way too far in favour of the TV companies - and too far away from the match-going, admission paying, regularly attending football supporter.

FC United seeks to change the way that football is owned and run, putting supporters at the heart of everything. This includes a better and more balanced relationship with TV.
