The Los Angeles Clippers announced today they will not offer a new contract to head coach Vinny Del Negro. A search for a new coach will begin immediately.

 

“We would like to thank Vinny for everything he did during his three years with the organization,” Clippers Vice President of Basketball Operations Gary Sacks said. “Vinny helped this team win a Pacific Division title and we greatly appreciate all that he and his staff helped us accomplish. This was a difficult decision, but we feel this is the best decision for our franchise moving forward.”

Less than a year ago Bucks center Larry Sanders was playing in the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, trying to show he belonged in the league.

 

This summer it appears Sanders will be back in Las Vegas, but this time as an invited player for a USA Basketball Select Team camp. A total of about 25 players will be invited to the camp, scheduled July 22-25, and Sanders sent out a Twitter message that he was among them.

 

"Just found out I got selected to work out/try out for the USA Basketball Team this summer!" Sanders tweeted. "Such an amazing honor. Glory be to God."

 

It's quite a transformation for Sanders, who became the Bucks starting center last season and finished a strong third in the league's most improved player voting. He also was a contender for the league's defensive player of the year award, placing seventh.

 

This is an off year for USA Basketball after the Americans won the gold medal in the 2012 London Olympics. A news conference is scheduled Thursday in Durham, N.C., to announce that Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski will return as U.S. coach for the next cycle featuring the 2014 FIBA World Cup in Spain and the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

 

The U.S. team is 62-1 under Krzyzewski with the only loss coming to Greece in the 2006 World Championship. Krzyzewski has led the Americans to two Olympic golds, with the other coming in Beijing in 2008. Former Bucks guard Michael Redd was a member of the U.S. team at the Beijing Games.

 

Primarily younger NBA players and rising stars will be invited to the Select Team camp, which includes three days of training and a USA Basketball Showcase game to be held July 25 at the Thomas & Mack Center.

 

An official roster is expected to be announced in early June.
