SAS_Robben Publicado 26 Fevereiro 2011 Nada a dizer. Oh... wait... Compartilhar este post Link para o post

SAS_Robben Publicado 27 Fevereiro 2011 ON THURSDAY, in a re-match of last year's Champions' League final, Bayern won away to Inter Milan, 1-0, going some distance to guaranteeing a place in the quarter-finals of Europe's biggest club competition. Domestically, it hosts league leader Borussia Dortmund tomorrow (former Melbourne Victory goalkeeper Mitchell Langerak's club) in what may be its last real chance to launch an assault on the Bundesliga title. A win would cut the deficit to 10 points, with nine games to go, which sounds huge until you consider that Dortmund, after a blistering start, has dropped nine points in seven matches. "Well, maybe it will be history repeating itself," says Bayern chairman and resident legend Karl Heinz Rummenigge. "Last season we started slowly too." That may be a bit of an understatement. Last November, it was eighth in the Bundesliga and on the brink of elimination from the Champions' League. It stormed back to win a league and cup double while reaching the Champions' League final. Advertisement: Story continues below This year, it fell as low as ninth in November and is now third. This is evidently not a club for the faint-hearted. But that's what you get with a manager like Louis Van Gaal. The word genius, usually accompanied by the modifier "flawed" gets thrown around a lot, but Van Gaal comes as close as you'll get. He made his name at Ajax in the mid-1990s, winning the Champions' League with a ridiculously talented side packed with youngsters and moved on to Barcelona, where he won two more league titles. Then, something seemingly cracked. Or maybe it was cracked to begin with and we simply didn't notice. Van Gaal, never the easiest man to deal with, became insufferable, regularly rowing with players, club officials, the media and fans. He walked out on Barcelona to return to Holland and a job with the national team, but he ended up having a row with his star players and failed to qualify for the World Cup. After a disastrous return to Barcelona, he went back to Ajax as technical director, bursting into tears at his inaugural press conference after reading a poem he had written professing his love for the club. Six months later he was gone, following - you guessed it - more conflicts with club officials. You've heard about the fine line between genius and insanity? By this point, many felt he had crossed over. With most big clubs considering him a loose cannon, he landed at Dutch minnow AZ Alkmaar, transforming it into a contender overnight and winning the league title. Which is why, in the summer of 2009, Bayern turned to him. It has been a bumpy ride, made bumpier by Van Gaal's idiosyncrasies. On the top floor of the club's training ground is the video room, where he conducts his collective "self-criticism" sessions, which are reminiscent of the Maoist auto-critiques from back in Communist China. "All the players are in there, we review film, and they are expected to recognise their mistakes and those of their teammates," says Christian Nerlinger, Bayern's general manager. "At first some were reluctant to speak up and criticise their teammates. But, the thing is, if you don't, he will, so it's best to be open." Speaking up is something Van Gaal has never been shy about. When he arrived at Bayern, the club had just acquired Ukrainian midfielder Anatoliy Tymoschuk and purchased centre forward Mario Gomez for a club record €30 million ($41 million). Van Gaal immediately decided he didn't like either player. Tymoschuk was limited to 11 league starts, while Gomez was in and out of the side. Nor did he fancy Lucio, the club's big Brazilian central defender who was - ironically - sold to Inter Milan. ("Van Gaal hurt me more than anyone else in football," said Lucio, Bayern's captain at the time.) Club officials grumbled openly about this, but Van Gaal was vindicated by Bayern's success in the latter half of the season. A year later - and this is typical Van Gaal - Tymoschuk and Gomez are key parts of the side. The former has been reinvented as a central defender, the latter was promoted to the starting line-up in mid-October and has responded by going on a scoring spree, with 27 goals in his last 24 matches. Last season, he yanked goalkeeper Michael Rensing in favour of veteran Hans-Jorg Butt (who had not been a full-time starter in four years). This year he's done the same, ditching Butt for youngster Thomas Kraft, who pulled off some spectacular saves against Inter. The joke among his critics was that Van Gaal had no choice but to give the pair a chance, after falling out with their replacements. Yet the joke is on them, because Bayern is flying and, what's more, he finally has both his star wingers - fellow Dutchman Arjen Robben and Frenchman Franck Ribery, known collectively as Robbery - fit. Together with the ungainly, but prolific, attacking midfielder Thomas Muller and Gomez, they form a fearsome quartet, arguably the best in Europe after Barcelona. "[Van Gaal] is not always a fun guy, or fun to deal with," admits Rummenigge. "His extreme honesty and openness can lead to friction, but he is an excellent football teacher and coach." There is little question about this. The question is whether Bayern can continue to channel Van Gaal's genius or if, as has happened in the past, he self-destructs under the weight of his own personality.
