Dexter

contempla matar a LaGuerta.

OMG OMG OMG. ALTAMENTE!

O julgamento dele?

Parece-me óbvio que a cena do Doakes é imaginação, é impossível ele estar vivo.

Going into its 7th season, Showtime’s hit drama DEXTER had a daunting task ahead. First of all it was coming off the most critically-panned season ever. From critics to fans, Season 6 was universally known as the series’ lowest point creatively. There were many reasons why Season 6 was a failure, and heading towards the last stretch, it was important that Season 7 would bring back some of that magic from earlier seasons. Not only DEXTER had to redeem itself from a horrible season, but Season 7 would also serve as the beginning of the end. It’s been confirmed that Season 8 would be the show’s last season, so the setup to the climax is crucial. Now heading towards the 7th Season Finale, did DEXTER do what it was sent out to do? As Debra Morgan would say: “Shit. you better fucking believe it!”DEXTER has not only improved itself immensely, but it has managed to give us one of the series’ best seasons yet. And that itself is an impressive feat after 7 seasons. But how did they do it? Here’s a few ways DEXTER has rejuvenated itself, and where I think it will be heading for its 8th and final season.

1) Game Changed

No matter how bad Season 6 was, DEXTER did leave us with a pretty huge cliffhanger. Sure it was way overdue, but Debra FINALLY catching her brother Dexter in the cast of murder was a turning-point that had to happen. Now the pessimist in me thought that they would conveniently find a way to sweep things under the rug during the 7th Season Premiere and we would go on like any other season. Thankfully I was wrong…dead wrong. The term “game-changer” is often overused in the TV world, but what DEXTER gave us at the end of that Season Premiere was the definition of a game-changer. “Are you a serial-killer?” Debra asks Dexter. “Yes” he answers. And just like that, you could feel a sense of relief as his secret was now out. This would not only affect Dexter the character himself, but it was also affect us watching at home. After all this time, we’re introduced to new ground. There was no turning back, and we had no clue where things would go. It was a shot of adrenaline that DEXTER and us fans needed. The game was changed forever. And it set up what happen to be one hell of a season surrounding the new notion that Debra now knows. How will she react now?

2) Dexter/Debra relationship and the Emmy worthy performances.

With his secret now out, it was so important not to screw up the aftermath of the monster reveal. How will Debra react to her brother’s news? Thankfully the big reveal managed to make the brother/sister relationship so much more interesting. We all know how brilliant Michael C. Hall is, and this season is no exception. He will probably earn himself another Emmy nomination for this season and it will be well deserved. However this season’s MVP has been Jennifer Carpenter. Now that Debra knows about Dexter, she’s conflict, hurt, confused, angry, sad, and more. Frankly, she’s been a mess. She doesn’t know how to react, or what to do. She loves Dexter, and at points was “in love” with him (worst storyline ever, by the way), but he’s a serial-killer. The character of Debra has never been more interesting, and Jennifer Carpenter has nailed it each step of the way. She has raised her game to now only show us how Deb feels, but actually make us feel how she feels. It would be a great injustice if Jennifer Carpenter is not nominated for an Emmy this year. With the exception of Homeland’s Claire Danes, there’s no one that deserves it more.

3) Pacing

One of DEXTER’s pitfalls is their trouble with the season’s pacing. Each season has 12 episodes. In previous seasons, often in the middle, the writers seem to slow things down with a few ‘filler’ episodes that have our hero running around doing something not very important. These episodes are necessary, but where’s there’s too many of them it makes for an awful season. This was one of the many problems with Season 6.This season the DEXTER writers seemed to have fixed their pacing troubles. To my count, I would say there’s only been one “filler” episode this season where not much happened. That’s perfectly acceptable. If you give too much away too fast, you risk running out of good material. But if you go too slowly, you have yourself a snoozer…or Rubicon. It’s all about that perfect balance.Having several important plots this season really helped. You had Dexter dealing with Deb and that new dynamic, you had Dexter meeting Hannah McKay and that relationship, and then the whole Ukrainian hitman storyline. DEXTER and Dexter was busy busy, so there was no time for filler. And that made for quite a ride.

4) Great Performances by the Newbies

After last season’s lukewarm performance by Colin Hanks (wasn’t his fault, the character/story sucked), it was a pleasant surprise to see the new faces perform so well.Ray Stevenson joined the cast as Ukrainian hitman Issak Sirko. Sirko was one of the most cerebral villains Dexter has seen, and also one of the most dangerous. He could go from 0 to YOU DEAD in a split-second. But it wasn’t all about the kills, Ray Stevenson managed to add lots of personality to a character that could have easily ended up being a cheesy James Bond-like bad-guy. Stevenson’s scenes with Michael C. Hall were some of the best of the season. They both had great chemistry together, and it was too bad he was killed off so soon. As Sirko said himself to Dexter, if only the circumstances were different…Another pleasant surprise was Yvonne Strahovski as Hannah McKay. Strahovski did a great job distinguishing apart from the other hot blonds this show had had. Much like Stevenson, she also had great chemistry with Michael C. Hall right off the bat. As Chuck fans already knew, Yvonne Strahovski is the real deal.

5) Shaking the Formula

With Dexter dealing with Deb knowing his secret, there was no “Big Baddie” introduced during Season 7. Sure there were a few speed-bumps like George Novikov and Issak Sirko, but they weren’t Trinity or Ice Truck Killer. The show also did a good job showing us that Hannah McKay was not a rehash of other characters we’ve met. I especially loved them being mentioned by name. Hannah was not Rita, she wasn’t Lila or Lumen. Hannah was different and her relationship with Dexter added a whole new foil to the series. What’s the biggest change to the formula? Heading into the Season Finale, we have no clue how it will end. Usually we expect Dexter finally getting his hands on the villain. But this season, they’re already dead. Instead we have the walls closing in on Dexter. Laguerta is so close to naming Dexter as the Bay Harbor Butcher, Dexter’s latest almost-victim is on the loose (and can identify him), and Hannah could turn Dexter in at any time now she’s in jail. Let’s not forget about Debra. Did she frame Hannah? Will she take the fall for something? The Season 7 Finale has to be the most mysterious finale of the series. And it all sets up one last epic season. A Few SnagsAs great as this season has been, there’s also been a few snags along the way. Here’s a few brief points:

During Season 6, they teased the Louis storyline the whole way through. The storyline was moving at a snail’s pace. We’re finally going to get answers or some sort of payoff, right? Why was he messing with Dexter? Why send him Ice Truck Killer evidence? Instead we got a lame excuse that he felt rejected followed by a bullet to the head by Issak. That’s it. Talk about wasted storyline.

Speaking of wasted storyline, let’s talk about Quinn killing George, the strip-club manager. This was just after George killed Issak and was going to go after Dexter…so we thought. Instead Quinn messed things up again, much like he can’t stop messing up his life and the lives of everyone around him. It’s hard to feel bad for him, he dates a stripper and then willingly accepts bribes AGAIN.

Why can’t they give Batista a good storyline? Or at least team him up with Laguerta on the Bay Harbor Butcher case. Sure, they’re exes, but it’s SOMETHING!

Not enough Jamie at the beach. She should always be on the beach in a bathing-suit. Make it her thing.

Final Thoughts

Despite these minor snags, Season 7 has not only surpassed my expectation but has managed to rejuvenate a series that desperately needed it. Was it a case of the writers listening to the complaints, or was this the plan all along? Honestly, it doesn’t matter. It’s also worth noting that ratings have never been so high.DEXTER may be counting down to its grand-finale, but it has shown us that it’s not limping away. Only time will tell how DEXTER will end. But I have no doubt that we’re in for one last killer ride.

Que jogada? 8-[/>/>

Dexter

"You should have killed me", f*da-se... :(

E sim, quando ela larga o "You should have killed me" também foi muito duro :-|
