Wimbledon 2010: Rafael Nadal shows a purity that puts him above Roger Federer

 

"Usually people ask "is he the greatest" when they are deep into emotional extra time after an epic match, but it is a deeper question after an anticlimax like this. Yesterday's final took place in the shadowlands of greatness because Nadal was far too good for Tomas Berdych. Is he now the best tennis player of all time?

 

The Federalists will squawk in disbelief and point out that their man has 16 grand slam titles, twice as many as Nadal. It's statistically incontrovertible, but Roger Federer beat a long list of not-quiters, has-beens or youngsters in those finals. Look them up if you don't believe me. The only thing golden about Federer's era was the appalling number 15 he wore on his tracksuit after last year's smug Wimbledon triumph. "

 

"Thank goodness we didn't get that sort of syrup from Nadal yesterday. The Spaniard may have more tics than a mangy horse, but he knows how to behave in victory and defeat. He even took the trouble to thank the Centre Court crowd for "the amazing respect" they showed him during his semi-final victory over Murray. Then the memory flashed by of the Fed saying on his way out of here: "Rafa's played terrible lately." Is that the same Rafa who leads you 14-7 in all-time games, 6-2 in grand Slam matches and 12-5 in finals? The Fed is dead, Viva la Rafa-lution. "

Federer to work with Paul Annacone on trial basis

 

With his ranking on the decline, Roger Federer is working with coach Paul Annacone on a trial basis.

 

Annacone, an American, is the former coach of Pete Sampras. He also coached Marat Safin and Tim Henman, and is now the head coach of men’s tennis for Britain’s Lawn Tennis Association.

 

“I’ve been looking to add someone to my team, and I’ve decided to spend some days with Paul Annacone,” Federer said on his website Monday. “As Paul winds down his responsibilities working for the Lawn Tennis Association, we will explore our relationship through this test period. Paul will work alongside my existing team, and I am excited to learn from his experiences.”

 

In the past two months Federer has slipped to No. 3 in the ATP rankings, the first time since November 2003 he’s been that low. He trails No. 1 Rafael Nadal and No. 2 Novak Djokovic.

 

Federer has worked with coaches Darren Cahill, Jose Higueras and Tony Roche, but has also gone without a coach for extended stretches.

 

He’s scheduled to play his first tournament since Wimbledon beginning Aug. 9 in Toronto. He plans to play in Cincinnati the following week before heading to the U.S. Open, and may be accompanied by Annacone.

 

“They will take the necessary time to see if the relationship can work,” Federer’s agent, Tony Godsick, said in an e-mail. “I would assume that Paul, if he can work it in with his remaining responsibilities and schedule with the LTA, will join Roger for some of his upcoming summer hard court events in North America.”

 

Federer’s most recent title came in January at the Australian Open, his 16th Grand Slam championship. His record streak of reaching the semifinals at 23 consecutive major tournaments ended when he lost in the quarterfinals at the French Open.

 

At Wimbledon, he also lost in the quarterfinals following seven consecutive appearances in the final.

 

Federer topped the rankings earlier this year but was overtaken by Nadal after the French Open. That left Federer one week shy of tying Sampras’ career record of 286 total weeks at No. 1.

Koellerer apronta de novo e é desclassificado de challenger na Itália

 

O austríaco Daniel Koellerer, conhecido no circuito como 'Crazy Dani' por ser um jogador temperamental e que comumente se mete em confusão, foi desclassificado essa semana de um torneio challenger na Itália depois de xingar o juiz e provocar seu adversário.

 

O torneio em questão é o Challenger de Cordenons, que é disputado no saibro e distribui 85 mil euros em premiação (mais hospedagem). Koellerer não tinha se inscrito na competição, mas ganhou um wildcard (convite) para jogar.

 

Tudo começou quando o adversário do austríaco na primeira rodada, o holandês Robin Haase, liderava a partida por 6/1 3/2 e saque no segundo set depois de ter acabado de quebrar o saque do rival. Foi aí que Koellerer, depois de perder um certo ponto, quebrou a raquete e começou a perder a cabeça. O juiz deu uma advertência no tenista, que ficou bravo com a decisão, pegou a raquete quebrada e começou a batê-la no chão, destroçando-a ainda mais.

 

Desse momento em diante, Koellerer passou a xingar a tudo a e a todos. Primeiro chamou o juiz de cadeira de ‘porco’, depois disse que o juiz de linha era ‘cego’, e quando era vaiado pelo público insultava os torcedores.

 

Haase, pode sua vez, tentava seguir no jogo. Depois de perder o saque, ele voltou a quebrar Koellerer e chegou ao duplo match-point quando tinha 6/1 5/4 e sacava com 40/15 no game. O jogo parecia acabado, mas o austríaco voltou a perturbar o adversário e o atrapalhou na hora de fechar. Primeiro o holandês errou um voleio fácil, depois cometeu duas dupla-faltas e na sequência devolveu o rival à partida após mandar um forehand na rede. A cada ponto que o rival errava, Koellerer vibrava de maneiro exagerada.

 

O set então seguiu, foi ao tie-break e Koellerer empatou o jogo marcando 7/6 (7/3) no segundo set. Agora então o austríaco ia sossegar? Que nada! Ele resolveu ir ao banheiro no intervalo para o terceiro set e estava demorando muito para voltar à quadra. Depois de muita reclamação da torcida, o juiz de cadeira foi ao vestiário buscar o tenista, que se recusava a voltar, e por isso tomou sua segunda advertência.

 

E quando finalmente retornou à quadra para iniciar o terceiro set, Koellerer discutiu de novo com o árbitro, pulou em cima dele, tomou sua terceira advertência e finalmente foi desclassificado.

 

Esse é apenas mais um episódio polêmico na vida do jogador de 27 anos. Recentemente, ele chamou o brasileiro Júlio Silva de ‘macaco’ e disse para ele ‘voltar para a selva’, além de ficar imitando um chimpanzé durante a partida contra o jundiaiense. Ainda esse ano, durante um torneio interclubes na Áustria, ele se desentendeu com o compatriota Stefan Koubek, que agarrou-o pelo pescoço depois de uma discussão.

 

Há alguns anos, durante uma etapa da Copa Petrobrás, o gaúcho naturalizado alemão Tomas Behend liderou um abaixo-assinado para banir Daniel Koellerer do circuito.

18 year german tennis prospect Maximilian Diemer fell into coma after practise session with Marin Cilic in Bob Bretts Academy in San Remo. Cilic is preparing for the Us hard court series, and often the best juniors get the chance to play with the big players.

 

The guy just sat down, started to have breathing problems and fell over, Cilc and some of the staff immediately tried to help him and reanimate him, speculation of overtraining and stress, and the they are fighting for his life now.

 

Some of the croatian journalists tried to call Cilic, Marin himself is in a state of shock and was not reachable, and they say there isnt too much hope...

Federer Sets Masters 1000 Record

 

 

Roger Federer became the all-time match wins leader in ATP World Tour Masters 1000 action after defeating Argentine Juan Ignacio Chela 7-6(7), 6-3 on Tuesday night at the Rogers Cup in Toronto.

 

The World No. 3, who notched his first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 win in 2000 at Miami, improved to a 210-65 lifetime record at the ATP’s premier level of tournaments. American Andre Agassi, the previous record holder, compiled a 209-73 mark from 1990-2006.

 

Federer returned to competition for the first time in more than a month, and was made to work hard in his second-round opener. Chela double faulted to give Federer a break in the sixth game, but prevented the Swiss from serving out the set as he converted on a triple break point opportunity to get back on serve at 5-4. Federer finally sealed the set after putting away his fifth set point of the tie-break.

 

The second set proved more straightfoward for the third-seeeded Swiss. Federer broke Chela to go up 3-2 and closed out the match in one hour and 21 minutes with another break of serve.

 

"I thought it was a good match overall," he said. "It's always nice to come back after six weeks and get the win. I think that's really what counts the most tonight. It's normal that you're a bit rusty after six weeks. You have to work your way into playing matches again, even though you play a lot of practice sets and matches."

 

Federer is looking to win his 17th ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title, and his first since last August at the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters in Cincinnati. He won his two Rogers Cup titles in 2004 and ’06 in Toronto.

 

This is Federer’s first tournament appearance as the world’s No. 3 player since the 2003 Tennis Masters Cup in Houston, where he ended up winning the title with victory over Andre Agassi in the final.

 

"Rankings are what they are," said Federer. "You can't control them that much unless you win tournaments. That's not what I have been doing lately, so I know I have to try to do better there. Other guys played well, as well. So they deserve the ranking that everybody has. Rankings usually don't lie, so it's up to me to make a move now."

 

The Swiss, who celebrated his 29th birthday Sunday, will next face the winner of the Nicolas Almagro - Michael Llodra match.

Federer Re-elected ATP World Tour Player Council President

 

 

The 2010-2012 ATP World Tour Player Council unanimously re-elected Roger Federer as President at its US Open meeting. Rafael Nadal was also re-elected as Vice President at the Council's first meeting.

 

"It is a great vote of confidence by my fellow Player Council members to be re-elected as President of the Council. I think it's important that the players have a seat at the table to discuss any issues confronting the sport," said Federer.

 

"We might not always agree on every point, but we respect each other's opinions and try to find a solution that works. I look forward to leading the group through 2012."

NÃO COMPARECEU NO LOCAL

Rita Freitas, atual vice-campeã nacional, falhou um controlo antidoping, depois de ter ganho o encontro das meias-finais no Open de Corroios. Freitas, de 24 anos, foi avisada que iriam ser feitas análises a todos os semifinalistas do torneio (masculinos e femininos) antes de começar a partida frente a Maria João Severino. Esta abandonou o encontro quando perdia por 0-6 e 0-2 devido a problemas físicos. Ao sair do campo, Rita Freitas não compareceu no local para ser feito o controlo antidoping, abandonando a seguir as instalações do clube. A atleta do Carcavelos Ténis foi assim desclassificada da prova e o torneio foi ganho por Maria João Koehler, que nem sequer precisou de entrar em campo para disputar a final. Rita Freitas, n.º 822 mundial, está suspensa preventivamente. O juiz-árbitro e o diretor do torneio, Fernando Alves, assinaram o relatório elaborado pelos elementos destacados para o controlo antidoping.

US Open: Azarenka sofre comoção cerebral durante a partida da 2ª ronda

 

No jogo da 2ª ronda do US Open Victoria Azarenka sofreu uma pequena comoção cerebral durante a partida com Gisella Dulko.

 

A bielorrussa recebeu assistência médica ainda no court de onde foi levada, em cadeira de rodas, para uma unidade hospitalar.

 

A tenista acabou por revelar que tinha se aleijado num braço e na cabeça numa queda, quando fazia o seu aquecimento no ginásio.

 

"Fui examinada pela equipa médica antes de entrar para o court. Fui-me sentindo pior conforme a partida avançava e sentia dores de cabeça e vertigens. Também comecei a sentir problemas de visão antes de cair ao chão. Fui levada ao hospital e o diagnóstico é que sofri uma ligeira comoção cerebral", explicou.

 

Victoria Azarenka abandonou a partida frente à argentina Gisella Dulko, quando se encontrava a perder por 5/1 no primeiro set.
