CEO: Event meant to create tennis buzz

NEW YORK -- Andy Roddick vs. Roger Federer in a serving speed contest? How about Rafael Nadal vs. Andy Murray in a timed race to chase down drop shots?

Those are the kind of matchups that could be featured at an All-Star showcase the head of the men's tennis tour is introducing next year as part of his efforts to help boost the sport's popularity.

"We're looking at it as a way to extend our reach, to reach more casual sports fans and tennis fans," Adam Helfant told The Associated Press on Tuesday in his first one-on-one interview since becoming the ATP's chief executive in January.

"It seems to work in other sports. We'll see if it works here. Our players think it will work."

The idea is to have a one- or two-day event in March, during the week before the hard-court tournament in Indian Wells, Calif., including a skills competition, pro-am celebrity doubles matches and an awards show. There have been preliminary talks about a TV deal.

Not interested in making any immediate changes to the game itself -- no on-court coaching, the way the WTA tour allows, for example -- Helfant is more concerned at the moment with off-court promotion and marketing.

He would, for example, like to generate more buzz at the beginning of the season, saying that's something other sports manage to do better than tennis. He's not sure whether anything can be put in place by the start of 2010, but he wants fans paying more attention in the days leading to the Australian Open each January.

Helfant, who grew up in New York, has an engineering degree from MIT and a law degree from Harvard. He worked for the NHL and in global marketing for Nike -- getting to know tennis players such as Federer and Maria Sharapova while negotiating their endorsement contracts -- before being hired by the ATP.

Touching on various topics, Helfant said he does not consider doping or match-fixing a "significant problem" for tennis. He also noted there are "some very serious conversations with a number of interested parties" that could result in a long-term deal with a new major sponsor beginning in 2010.

Mercedes-Benz ended its sponsorship of the ATP tour when its contract expired in 2008. The carmaker had been one of the tour's main global sponsors since 1996.

"We understand that we have a hole in terms of not having a tour-wide sponsor," Helfant said. "We have not replaced Mercedes yet. At the beginning of the year, it was very difficult to even get meetings. Companies and industries are hurting, and the tour isn't immune to that."

Henin announces return to tennis

Former world number one Justine Henin has announced her intention to return to competitive tennis in 2010, having retired just 16 months ago.

The 27-year-old Belgian, who won 41 singles titles, including seven Grand Slams, sparked rumours of a comeback when she began training again recently.

Henin retired on 14 May 2008, saying she had lost her passion for tennis.

Her return follows the fairytale comeback of compatriot Kim Clijsters, who won the US Open earlier this month. Clijsters returned to the sport after a two-and-a-half years away, during which time she gave birth to a daughter, Jada. After barely a month back on the tour, the 26-year-old former world number one beat both Venus and Serena Williams on her way to success at Flushing Meadows.

Henin had played down speculation of a comeback in May, saying that the sport had left her with so many physical ailments a return was unthinkable. But since the revelation that she was back in training, she had refused to speculate on a possible return to the WTA Tour.

Following her retirement, Henin, who was ranked number one in the world when she quit, had been working as a goodwill ambassador for Unicef and opened her own tennis academy.

She won the French Open four times, the US Open twice, the Australian Open once and an Olympic gold in 2004. Henin's relatively small stature - she is only 5ft 5ins tall - and elegant one-handed backhand made her stand out among her rivals.

Her last competitive match was a three-set defeat by current world number one Dinara Safina at the German Open on 8 May, 2008.

Former World No. 13 Pavel Retires From Professional Tennis

Former World No. 13 Andrei Pavel has officially retired from professional tennis, after competing at the BCR Open Romania in Bucharest this week.

"I have no regrets and am very proud of my career,” said 35-year-old Pavel, after losing to Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay on Wednesday. “I was surprised at my performance, having been Davis Cup captain indoors in Sweden last week. I didn’t practise as much as I would have liked beforehand, but I enjoyed it. It will be nice not to chase rankings points anymore.”

Pavel won three ATP World Tour singles titles (3-6 overall), including one ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title at the 2001 Rogers Cup, when he beat Andy Roddick, Tommy Haas and Patrick Rafter. He also captured six doubles trophies from 11 finals.

"I had two beautiful moments in my career,” he said. “I enjoyed Davis Cup and also clinching the Masters [1000] title at Montreal in 2001, beating the top guys there [d. Rafter in final]. When I played Davis Cup in France, I carried the flag and received a five-minute standing ovation.”

Pavel made his Davis Cup debut for Romania in 1991 and went on to amass a 40-22 record (32-15 in singles) in 27 ties. He was appointed the nation’s Davis Cup captain in 2009.

He also represented Romania at the 1996 Atlanta, 2000 Sydney and 2004 Athens summer Olympic Games and finished in the Top 100 on nine occasions in 10 years, until a back injury hindered his career in the past couple of years.

“I have moved my family [wife Simone, daughter Caroline Elena and son Marius] over to the United States and I will try to open a tennis academy with a very good friend of mine,” he said. “At the same time I will also help to develop Romanian tennis, which is not an easy job, but there is a lot of talent and hopefully we can manage it and give them experience at an earlier age.”

As a junior competitor in 1992, he captured the Roland Garros title (d. Mose Navarra) and reached the Wimbledon semi-finals.

Pavel! :prayer:

Dear Fans

I am disappointed that I have to withdraw from Tokyo and Shanghai as they are two of my favorite cities in the world and the fans have been great to me over the years. After consultation with my team and doctors, I decided to take the difficult decision to withdraw from both tournaments so that I can give my body a chance to rest, rehabilitate and fully recover from a physically challenging year.

Kind regards

Roger

Thai Hero Srichaphan To Return

Former ATP World Tour No. 9 Paradorn Srichaphan will make a return to competitive tennis next week as a wild card entrant into the doubles draw at the Thailand Open. The Bangkok native will team up with countryman Danai Udomchoke at the ATP World Tour 250 tennis tournament.

The 30-year-old Srichaphan had been sidelined with a recurring right wrist injury since March 2007, when he retired against Luis Horna in the Sony Ericsson Open first round. He underwent surgery in Los Angeles in October later that year.

In the first round of his comeback, Srichaphan and Udomchoke will face German-Austrian duo Michael Kohlmann and Alexander Peya. Srichaphan and Udomchoke also paired together at the 2005 Thailand Open, when they reached the quarter-finals (l. to Hanley-Paes).

Before being struck down by injury, Srichaphan had enjoyed a glittering career and peaked at No. 9 in the South African Airways ATP Rankings on 12 May 2005. He contested 11 ATP World Tour finals and won five titles, beginning with the If Stockholm Open in 2002 (d. Rios). His most recent title came at the 2004 AEGON International (d. Thomas Johansson), when it was held in Nottingham.

The right-hander made his Grand Slam breakthrough at 2002 Wimbledon, when he defeated the then World No. 4 Andre Agassi in the second round. He was subsequently named the ATP’s Most Improved Player at the end of the season. His best results were fourth-round efforts at 2003 Wimbledon (l. to Roddick), the 2003 US Open (l. to Hewitt) and the 2004 Australian Open (l. to Agassi).

Srichaphan is a national hero in his native country and enjoyed strong performances at the Thailand Open, reaching the semi-finals from 2004-06. The 2002 “Thai of the Year” carried his country’s flag in the opening ceremony of the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens and was issued a red diplomatic passport when he was named Thai cultural ambassador.

Sergio Roitman Announces Retirement

Argentine tennis player Sergio Roitman has announced his intention to retire from professional tennis at the conclusion of the Copa Petrobas, an ATP World Tour Challenger tournament in Buenos Aires. The Buenos Aires native was joined by his life-long coach, Alejandro Lombardo as he made the announcement at the draw ceremony on Saturday.

“It is a strange moment for me, but the time has come for me to leave professional tennis,” said Roitman. “Physically, I cannot compete at the highest level anymore. I think this is the best place to retire, at a tournament that has given me a lot of pleasure and surrounded by people that have helped me and whom I love very much. I extend my warmest thanks to Ale (Lombardo), because he has always been by my side and with him I have achieved the best victories of my sporting career.”

The 30-year-old Roitman is currently No. 124 in the South African Airways 2009 ATP Rankings. He reached a career-high No. 62 in singles on 8 October 2007, and achieved his highest doubles ranking (No. 45) on 8 September 2008.

During his 14-year career he amassed $1,287,217 in prize money and won two ATP World Tour doubles titles at Amsterdam in 2000 and the ATP Studena Croatia Open in 2001, both with Andres Schneiter.
