Para quem gosta de ler sobre crítica de cinema/media, tenho estado a ler "Unthinking Eurocentrism: Multiculturalism and the Media", Ella Shohat & Robert Stam (1994), e é muito bom. Três excertos:

A number of African and Afro-diasporic films, such as Faces of Women (1985), Barravento (1962), and Pagador de Promessas (The Given Word, 1962), deploy drum ouvertures in ways that affirm African cultural values. The French film Noir et Blanc en Couleur (Black and White in Color, 1976) employs music satirically by having the African colonized carry their colonial masters on their backs, but satirize them through the songs they sing: "My master is so fat, how can I carry him? ... Yes, and mine has stinky feet ... " Films by African and Afro-diasporic directors like Sembene, Cisse, and Faye not only use African music but celebrate it. Julie Dash's Daughters of the Dust (1990) deploys an African "talking drum" to drive home, if only subliminally, the Afrocentric thrust of a film dedicated to the diasporic culture of the Gullah people.(...)

John Ford's Grapes of Wrath (1940), like the John Steinbeck novel on which it is based, focusses on the plight of Okies expelled from their land, yet fails to remind us that the Okies had themselves deprived Native Americans of the same land a half-century before, and that these same Native Americans had themselves been displaced from lands further to the East. Yet the film carries tell-tale traces of the erased culture, in the form of place names ("Cherokee County") and in a single shot of a picturesque reservation along Highway 66. A film like Dead Poet's Society (1989), similarly, treats an elite, lily-white 1950s milieu, yet encodes the boys' revolt against private-school repression as  culturally Black (in the form of the boys' tapped-out polyrhythms) or Black at one remove (in the form of their "White negro" emulations of Beat poetry), and Native American (the boys' ritual activities in the sacred liminal space of the cave). Indeed, the boys' warpaint and drums anticipate the contemporary men's movement, in which White men put on Indian headdresses and carry spears on weekend retreats, in a primitivist attempt to release the "barbaric yawp" of the dark Iron Man repressed at the bottom of the White male psyche.(...)

The western's imagery of encirclement entails not only a particular perspective of siege but also the inflation of the external threat. The "moderate" and "pragmatic" Hussein of earlier political rhetoric, ally of American policy and the darling of American, British, and German corporations, was transformed into a reincarnation of Hitler with the rapidity with which enemies for "Hate Week" were fabricated in Orwell's 1984. It was also within the logic of the Manichean allegory that Bush, invoking the venerable tradition of the righteous massacre, would ask for divine blessing for American armed forces in a National Day of Prayer, just as he thanked the pilots in the January 1992 bombings for "doing the Lord's work." And since the Manichean allegory does not allow for two competing evils, or for lesser and greater evils, or for minor and major thugs, but only for good against evil, it also allows for only one legitimate outcome: the annihilation of evil in a ritual sacrifice or exorcism that "cleanses" the accumulated iniquity. "Allah creates," said one Gulf war ditty, "but we cremate."(...)

Que tragédia do krl. Esta morte e a do Gene Hackman são tremendamente trágicas.

Este ano fica na história do cinema pelos piores motivos.

A run dele como realizador entre 86 e 92 é incrível.
