Coming force: Guedes in action against Feirense at the weekend

 

Manchester United scouts were in attendance at Benfica this weekend, keeping tabs on 'the new Ronaldo' - Goncalo Guedes.

 

Club officials made their way to the Estadio da Luz on Sunday afternoon to watch the 19-year-old, already a senior Portuguese international, in action during Benfica’s 4-0 win over Feirense.

 

Guedes, who is represented by Jorge Mendes, is seen as one of the most highly-rated prospects in Portuguese football right now.

 

And after committing his future to Benfica during the summer for this season, Guedes has been thrust front and centre in a new-look side.

Rather than playing out wide, Guedes has been lining up in a central role in the early part of the season, as coach Rui Vitoria looks to piece together a new-look side after seeing a host of players depart in the summer, including chief creator Nico Gaitan (Atletico) and all-action 18-year-old phenomenon Renato Sanches (Bayern).

 

Just one goal has followed in eight appearances - coming in the Champions League loss to Napoli last week - but Guedes is seen in Lisbon as the next product who will be sold for big money by the Portuguese giants, despite his contract in Lisbon having another five years to run.

 

A host of scouts from across Europe were in attendance, as the Primeira Liga leaders made it 19 points from their opening seven matches.

 

Juventus, Valencia, Osasuna and Middlesbrough, as well as two German clubs were all watching on as goals from Eduardo Salvio, Franco Cervi, Alex Grimaldo and a Luis Aurelio own goal handed them a comfortable win.

 

Guedes started up front alongside Fulham reject Kostas Mitroglou and is believed to being eyed with a view to a move potentially as early as next summer.

 

It comes after a 11 English clubs were part of a group of 31 from across Europe who recently took in Benfica's Champions League clash with Besiktas.

 

This week Guedes joins up with the Seleccao’s Under-21 side, for their final qualifiers ahead of next summer’s Euro U21 finals, where he is tipped to be a key man.

 

United have also been linked with Grimaldo, the Barcelona-schooled left-back who can count Man City boss Pep Guardiola as a fan.

 

However it is understood Jose Mourinho is happy with his current options at leftback, with Luke Shaw and versatile Dutchman Daley Blind.

 

Chelsea are long-time admirers of Benfica’s Swedish international defender Victor Lindelof.
