A long-running joke in praise of LeBron James’ brilliance is that you could surround him with a couple Cavaliers and some NBDL players and he could still find a way to win. On Friday night, that fiction became fact.

After consummating one of the biggest trades in franchise history on Thursday, literally shipping half the team to Chicago and Seattle, the Wine and Gold were forced to bring up a pair of D-Leaguers just to dress the league-minimum eight players. And with three of their core guys – Daniel Gibson, Anderson Varejao and Sasha Pavlovic – out with injuries, the makeshift Cavaliers were truly a skeleton crew.

 

But that didn’t stop an inspired Cavaliers club, who fought the Wizards tooth-and-nail for four quarters and came away with one of the most satisfying wins of the season – a 90-89 nailbiter over Washington on Friday evening at The Q.

 

“We figured out a way to get the ‘W’ and that was exciting,” said Coach Mike Brown. “That was fun to watch such a group of guys keep pushing, keep pushing, keep pushing, until they found a way.”

 

The newest members of the squad: Ben Wallace, Wally Szczerbiak, Delonte West and Joe Smith watched the win from a suite after arriving shortly before game time. Seeing what the Chosen One can do without them had to get them salivating for what it’ll be like when they’re wearing the wine and gold.

 

LeBron was simply amazing once more, finishing just two dimes short of his third consecutive triple-double. The young King still managed 33 points, 15 boards and eight assists despite being double- and triple-teamed for the majority of the night. LeBron was 11-for-20 from the floor and 9-for-14 from the stripe – including the game-tying and game-winning free throws.

 

“We had guys in the wrong spots at times and spacing wasn’t right all the time. Sometimes I wasn’t in the right spot. We worked hard and we did it with effort.”

 

Neither team opened a double-digit lead throughout the night and neither team outscored the other by more than two points in any quarter. The Wizards went to the line 12 more times than the Cavaliers, but Cleveland out-rebounded the Wizards, 13-3, on the offensive glass and canned 12 three-pointers to Washington’s four.

 

Devin Brown’s dunk put the Cavaliers up three – 88-85 – but a pair of free throws by Brendan Haywood and DeShawn Stevenson give the Wizards a one-point lead with 40 seconds to play. But LeBron did his thing, driving to the rim and getting fouled with 7.8 seconds remaining. James calmly canned his free throws and some stingy defense by James and Zydrunas Ilgauskas forced an errant shot by Stevenson to preserve the one-point victory.

 

Only three Cavaliers netted double-figures on Friday night, but one of them was Damon Jones, who put on a career performance, draining a season-high seven three-pointers for a season-best 27 points. Jones was 10-for-16 overall from the floor, adding four dimes and a steal.

 

“My mindset was just to go out and be able to contribute,” quipped Jones. “LeBron created, I was open; Devon created, I was open; Z got double-teamed, I was open. I was just glad to be able to make some shots and help us get a win.”

 

Devin Brown rounded out the Cavaliers in double-figures and barely missed a triple-double of his own. Brown finished with 10 points, 10 boards and seven assists in the win.

 

The Wizards have five players in double-figures, led by Darius Songalia – who pitched in with 19 points off Eddie Jordan’s bench. DeShawn Stevenson added 18 points, Antawn Jamison, 16.

 

Providing all the players in Thursday’s trade pass their physicals, the new foursome of Cavaliers could take the floor as early as Sunday night, when the Wine and Gold welcome the Grizzlies to The Q.

There was a tangible sense of a relaxed attitude among the remaining Cavaliers on Friday night. With 7:27 remaining in the third quarter, Eric Snow canned a short jumper – his only field goal of the night – and playfully, self-effacingly raised his arms into the air with a big smile to the delight of the crowd.

 

Naturally, Damon Jones was killing in the locker room after the game. “Man, I like playing time, but 44 minutes is crazy,” he joked. “I’m good with 32, 35 minutes, man.”

 

The Cavaliers nailed 12 three-pointers on a season-high 32 attempts. Cleveland is now 5-1 this season when they make at least a dozen three-pointers in a game.

 

The new Cavaliers arrived right before game time and participated in the team’s pre-game huddle right before the squad took the floor. After the game, they checked out their new lockers. Ben Wallace was trying out Larry Hughes’ old spot, Joe Smith scoping out Drew Gooden’s. Numerically, Wally Szczerbiak will wear No. 10; Delonte West, (13); Ben Wallace, (4) and Joe Smith, (32).

 

Fresh off their call-up from the Colorado 14ers, Billy Thomas finished with nine points on three three-pointers in 20 minutes of action; Kaniel Dickens grabbed one rebound in eight minutes.

 

With the win, the Cavaliers moved to 17-7 since January 1 – the best mark in the Eastern Conference in that timespan.

Eu até agora aprecio mais o Lebron do que apreciei o Kobe no principio da sua carreira.

É a minha opinião. São os meus dois jogadores favoritos mas prefiro o LeBron. É uma opinião pessoal.

Btw, o LeBron só tem um defeito. Free Throws. Se ele tivesse uma média de 80+% como o Kobe teria mais uns 5 pontos por jogo. Devia trabalhar mais nesse aspecto visto que é um jogador que vai imensas vezes à linha (3º da liga) e poderia aproveitar muito mesmo esse aspecto.

É impossivel comparar os dois através de nrºs. O mais que podemos dizer é que apreciamos mais um do que o outro em determinados momentos da carreira.

uma coisa que me chamou bastante a atençao:

o resultado do jogo suns-celtics, e o jogador com mais assistencias ter sido o Nash (normal), mas com apenas 5... estranho no minimo... ja li que o jogo foi mais defensivo, mas so 5 assistencias é quase nada

O Kobe foi escolhido no draft de 96 e foi campeao pela primeira vez em 99-00, ou seja na 4ª epoca. o LeBron foi escolhido em 2003 e chegou as finais pela primeira vez em 06-07 . e o lebron nao estava assim tao sozinho, o gooden,ilgauskas e etc sao sempre bons jogadores.
