Suddenly, there was this transfer at the end of Summer: Ricky van Wolfswinkel to Sporting. Not Ajax. Not Feyenoord. But Portugal. Of all places.

 

People ( also on this blog) said: that is not a smart move…. But six months later, Ricky scored prolifically, has been named player of the month twice already and is linked to Chelsea and Man United. It worked out well.

 

Van Wolfswinkel drives his Audi Q5 through Lisbon and talks: “Lisbon is tremendous. I love this city. You need to honk your horn in traffic a bit, but otherwise it’s good fun. The days are long, the sun is out most of the time. What’s not to like :-) ? In the first months, Bianca and I thought we were on a perpetual holiday. But now it feels like home.”

 

Walking through Lisbon with Ricky demonstrates his status. Groups of kids run up to him to talk to him and touch him, while adults stare and point and take pics. “Football is important here, and football players are like heroes. It’s a bit like in Italy I guess. Portugal is not doing too well economically, so football gives respite to people. We had Sporting – Benfica in November and that is like Feyenoord – Ajax to the hilt. And Sporting is like Feyenoord, the club of the people, you know? It’s weird, with Utrecht when I was there, whenever we lost a game some fans would yell horrible stuff at me on the streets. That is unthinkable here. People pay you the greatest respect.”

 

Van Wolfswinkel speaks fluent Portuguese which is a testament to the quick manner in which he settled in. He scored 13 official goals in his first half season.

“There are certain laws in football. One is: you have to be prepared from day 1. You don’t get time to settle in, you need to produce. Your history, statistics or transfer fee are irrelevant. It’s about the now. We have 14 different nationalities in our team and almost all of them are internationally capped players. So it’s a bit dog eat dog. As a striker, you need to score goals.”

 

O Lodo ( The Wolf) was bought for 5.4 mio euros and signed for 5 seasons. He was supposed to start on the bench, behind Helder Postiga. But the Sporting striker was signed by Zaragoza and the Sporting coach wasn’t able to get another striker. So Ricky got his chance and Ricky took it.

 

“I think I impressed the coach in the pre-season. I felt so strong and confident. And here, in Portugal, they look at your strength and don’t have that attitude we have in Holland. In Holland, there is always a “but”. “He can score but he can’t sprint” or “Van Bommel always lets his man unmarked” or “De Jong is too aggressive”. Here they focus on your strengths and forgive you your weaknesses. So for me, it’s about scoring and that was what I did! From day one. And I scored goals I didn’t expect me to score, haha. Things went really well for me. And I noticed that my team mates accepted me and the coaching staff and within a few months you’re not longer the new, young kid but you’re one of the mainstays.”

 

Van Wolfswinkel says he never felt that kind of support at FC Utrecht. “I scored goals in Utrecht, I was the same Ricky, but I always felt that if I didn’t score within the hour, the coach wanted to sub me. I was always looking at the bench. I never felt the credit I have here and somehow people always lacked confidence in me. Why? No clue. I asked the coach (Du Chatinier) but he never explained it to me…. He decided that the way to handle me was to scold me at practice and yell at me and all that. And that simply didn’t work for me. I’m a fan of the game. I need to feel good. I need to feel supported. They didn’t push the right buttons for me. When we trained on thursdays, we’d practice scoring. I sometime want to play around. Do a trick or try a back heel or something. I wouldn’t necessarily do that on matchdays, you know. But they’d attack me for it. But hey, I don’t want to be negative. I love FC Utrecht and would love to return there one day.”

 

Ricky lives in Lisbon in a luxuruous penthouse, overlooking the river with partner Bianca Neeskens. Yes, the daughter of… Is it an advantage to be with someone who understands the life of a professional football player?

 

“Oh yes, she knows exactly what it takes for us and she consciously decided to go that path. She lived in Switzerland, Barcelona…she speaks four languages already and now Portuguese as a fifth. Her parents have lived in Istanbul recently and South Africa. Yeah, that helps…”

 

In the apartment, The Wolf has two massive trophies in his house. Player of the Month. Twice, once in September 2011 and one in November… “We don’t have this in Holland, so when they told me I had to go and collect this after a game, I thought “yeah right….football humor”… So I didn’t go… Hahaha… ”

Van Wolfswinkel never expected this transfer. “I was holidaying in Greece and I got the call. Sporting wanted me and they wanted me quick. So I flew there the next day, with Bianca. My parents were there, from Holland, and it was like a roller coaster. Stadium, medical, more talks and then they left us in a skybox and we had to decide. My dad said: you only get one or two of these opportunities… So we did it. There were a lot of doubters, mainly because the Portuguese competition has the reputation of being mean, but that is truly exaggerated. The top half of the league here play really technical football. Pass and move, high paced. It’s a founded on resilience and tenacity though, but it’s only amongst the weaker teams that you find some butchers at the back. But hey…you gotta find ways to protect yourself. I move constantly. Constantly looking for space. I weighed 70 kilos in Holland, here I am 75 kilos. I gained muscle and strength and I feel fit and in form. The pressure from these tough defenders has made me stronger.”

 

The former Vitesse strikers continues. “You know a huge difference with Holland….? In Holland, they say “you play like you practice…” Hence my coaches at Utrecht being livid if I tried something flash. Here, they hardly train. It’s all focused on being in the zone on matchday. I love it! We practice an hour a day. Stretching, a bit of fooling around. A bit of tactical stuff. Done! And before the matchday, it’s massages and all that. Hours long! Lovely, haha. I hate practice and everyone here does. We have many great players in our squad and lets face it? Did you see the recent results between Portuguese teams and Dutch teams? Benfica slaughtered Twente! Porto, Benfica and to a somewhat lesser extend Sporting do better in Europa than Dutch teams. Portuguese clubs cheer if they drew a Dutch opponent. They think we are naive and want to solve things in a technical way. They like their odds…”

 

The Prince of Portugal… Or, a kid in the candy store. When he arrives at the Estadio Alvalade, he wants to walk around on the pitch. With the smile of a passionate fan he says that C Ronaldo, Nani and Liedson played on the same pitch, in the past. “2011 was a top year for me. I’m enjoying every minute. I know there are – allegedly – clubs following me but I don’t pay any attention to it. I’m not the kind of player to call my agent after a match. If something concrete comes, I’ll hear it. Until then, not interested. I could easily finish my contract here.”

 

When Oranje is mentioned, Ricky shrugs his shoulders. “Have you seen the tremendous quality Van Marwijk can pick from? I’m a real striker, so I compete with two of the planet’s best: Robin van Klaas Jan. Then there’s utility players who can play striker and on other spots. Kuyt, Van der Vaart… Luuk de Jong can play midfielder… So, you know… I’ll see what comes for me. I will not say “I belong in Oranje”. I’m sure the team manager knows I exist and that’s it. I need to focus on what I do at my club and do well there and who knows…”

Parece que o Bojinov não está arrependido. Eu acho indesculpável a atitude que ele teve para com o Matías, treinador e adeptos, mas de certa forma até o compreendo. Queria dar um pontapé (literalmente :mrgreen:) na crise e afirmar-se no Sporting.

 

Eu próprio a seguir ao jogo me enervei um bocado e pedi a rescisão de contrato. Continuo a achar que não tem condições para jogar no Sporting depois do que se passou, mas tenho pena que saia assim crucificado por uma atitude má e irreflectida que no fundo foi tomada com boas intenções.

 

Agora se não é a primeira vez que tem situações deste género, então aí retiro o que disse.

O que eu entendo daqui é que ele diz que treinam uma hora no dia do jogo e que no dia anterior fazem massagens durante várias horas.

No fundo tudo se resume ao resultado final. Tivesse marcado e elogiávamos a coragem, a determinação, a "raça de leão". Como falhou, apontamos a falta de respeito para com a hierarquia, com os colegas e a azelhice. Isto é como um remate de longe, se entrar é um grande golo e um grande momento de inspiração individual, se a bola for para a bandeirola de canto foi um remate desnecessário, com poucas hipóteses de dar golo e o jogador devia ter optado por outro caminho.

Não, não fez. Na altura em que o Ricardo marcou o penalty estávamos na morte súbita, no 7º penalty (2ª da morte súbita) se não estou em erro. Como sabes, para essa altura não há marcadores designados, pelo que o treinador decide na hora quem quer. O Ricardo pediu para ser ele, e o Scolari aceitou - o Ricardo não bateu o penalty à revelia do treinador, como aconteceu com o Bojinov.

 

E sim, se tivesse falhado era ainda mais crucificado do que é agora.

O caso do Ricardo é completamente diferente, na minha opinião.

 

O Ricardo assumiu a decisão de marcar o penalty, sem escândalo e sem fazer o que o Bojinov fez a um companheiro de equipa. O que o Bojinov fez foi uma demonstração de mau profissionalismo.
