I genuinely don't understand how it went so wrong for Mourinho with us. First season was characterized by great play but catastrophic finishing. Started off shite, but by the end we had improved from the Moyes / Van Gal era in almost every metric except finishing. That summer we kept saying that all we needed to be a legitimate top team was a goal scorer who was more clinical in front of the net.

2nd year, in comes Lukaku and we're smashing teams left and right, scoring 3-4 goals a game for some stretches. Midfield was clicking, attack was clicking, strikers were scoring for fun and we were challenging for first. Then somewhere mid season we string together a few bad performances and everything just goes to shit. End of November it looked like Mourinho had finally worked his magic and started to turn the team around, only for us to start shitting the bed and piecing together lethargic performances every week.

I really don't understand how a team that looked so reformed and promising a year ago went to such absolute shit within the span of a few months. The defense is a disaster and Lukaku somehow went from world class to looking like he just got shipped from a Championship team.

I absolutely admire what Mourinho's accomplished in his career and how incredible he's been, but he has to fucking go. Don't know where it went wrong for him but the dude clearly doesn't inspire players the same way anymore and just keeps making excuse after excuse every week. I really think some time off from the sport would do him a lot of good. Tactically he still shows glimpses of the old Mourinho but he's far from the man manager he used to be.

...

People got carried away with the first season because we won two trophies but all the signs were there right from the start.

Remember, we started very well and went into the derby 4/4 wins or whatever. We fucked it in the derby and never recovered. We finished 6th in his first season! 6th!

The first season was at best par. It wasn't good. The football was OK, but it wasn't good enough for a long shot. We parked the bus against Ajax in the Europa final ffs. We got CL, so it didn't really matter.

Second season was awful, again lots of people got fooled by the second place. The performances were dogshit the whole season, capped off with that Sevilla game which was as cowardly and pathetic as it gets.

Mourinho has never actually looked like he was truly on to something here and it's all just catching up with him. He#s well passed it at this stage in his career and people were saying that before we hired him.

...

Mou delivered and improved MU in the first two seasons, identified players early, and expected to be supported by the board with signings. Never happened, and he proceeded to pour kerosene all over his work and the club.

...

Legit I don't get why people say they don't know how it went so wrong? Did you all somehow forgot his last season at his last 2 clubs especially Chelsea?? They won the damn league then he took them to a relegation fight. Did ANYONE think we would improve from the 2nd year with all the signs and red flags we saw? Like he made Hazard look like Jesus Navas ffs. I for one am shocked we are bottom of the table. Like if he took champions to a relegation fight, what would he have done with us? He's needed to go after Sevilla mate. I guess the people who told us about third season syndrome and we labelled them crazy are laughing at us.

...

I think you're romanticising the past 2 seasons, the problems have been there right from the start. We've played 100+ games under Mourinho and I swear there are only a handful where you can go "yup we played well and dominated". We shithoused and scraped our way to the EL and 2nd place last season. Credit to Mourinho, he got the back line in shape after LVG and stopped goals from going in. But going forward we were never cohesive at all. The games where we scored multiple goals were against poor teams who just couldn't match up to better players. He just can't get the attackers to click, which is not surprising given that he continues to set up conservatively and in a reactionary manner even against midtable sides.

...

My feelings exactly.

I was in a minority about not wanting us to sign him when fans were wanking over us need to sack LVG earlier because he was available. He's never been right for the club, we got the short term "success" in the sense - a couple of the lesser cups, back to back seasons in the CL and sort of challenging for part of the year for the league last season. Anyway he was appointed and I supported him (and I mean I still get behind the team & hope we get results right now), but the situation doesn't look like getting better now.

He's part of the reason for the toxic environment. He could easily come out in the media and be more optimistic, say nicer things, not bring the drama that incites the criticism and just get on with the job but he doesn't want to do that.

I think we're a real mess and the board needs to reflect fully on the next appointment. I can fully see top managers turning us down as who would want to work under such conditions? I doubt Mourinho gets another top job in England for a while due to his time here.

Madrid? I'm sure he will go there and win trophies - and what will that say about us? Complete mess at the club right now.

...

A few things happened that were like a domino effect:

  • Lukaku was in a scoring slump around the same time Ibrahimovic got injured, so we lost a good, capable player and leader on the field
  • Sanchez signing led to Martial being dropped who was in the form of his life
  • Pogba had a drop in form which resulted in him being dropped... and subsequently the Pogba vs. Mourinho battle has started

All of this was happening around/after the extension and before Sevilla. We still had a solid end of the season (wins at Liverpool and City) but some questionable performances. A clear drop in quality vs. the first half. I think part of the reason we became so defensive was because Mourinho saw his attack collapse (no Ibra, Sanchez was shit and Pogba had a bad run of games) and instead of adjusting to the other options we had, we parked the bus and generated less chances.

Eh pá, tenho pena do United...
