Alonzo Mourning, Gary Williams lead Hall of Fame class

The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame class of 2014 has a Washingtonian tint.

Georgetown legend Alonzo Mourning, University of Maryland coaching great Gary Williams and six-time NBA All-Star Mitch Richmond, who played three years with the Washington Wizards, were among those elected Monday for enshrinement in August. Former Arkansas championship coach Nolan Richardson and the iconic 1970s Immaculata University women's basketball championship teams joined the group that already included five direct-elect inductees.

Mourning will go down as one of the greatest players in Miami Heat history, a two-time defensive player of the year who averaged 17.1 points, 8.5 rebounds and 2.8 blocks a game in 15 seasons. He was drafted second overall, behind Shaquille O'Neal, by the Charlotte Hornets in 1992 after four years with the Hoyas, and he went on to play with the Heat and New Jersey Nets. Mourning won a championship as O'Neal's backup for the 2005-06 Heat.

Williams took over his alma mater's basketball program amid major NCAA violations in 1990 and steered Maryland all the way to the 2001 Final Four and 2002 national championship. His previous stops included American, Boston College and Ohio State, and he retired in 2011 with a 668-380 career record.

Richmond may be most remembered as the M in the Golden State Warriors' early-1990s "Run-TMC" teams, when he paired with Tim Hardaway and fellow Hall of Famer Chris Mullin. The stocky shooting guard nicknamed "Rock" then went on to make six All-Star teams in seven seasons with the Sacramento Kings. He later jointed the Wizards for three years in a trade that landed Chris Webber in Sacramento. He closed his career by winning a championship with the 2001-02 Los Angeles Lakers.

Richardson was one of the most successful coaches in the country during his time at Arkansas, leaving Tulsa to take over a program Hall of Fame snub Eddie Sutton had helped build. He won the 1994 championship and led the Razorbacks to the 1990 and 1995 Final Fours. He was fired after controversial comments about racism at Arkansas, later filing suit against the school.

Immaculata won three consecutive AIAW championships, a precursor to the NCAA including women's basketball, in 1972, '73 and '74 under the guidance of Hall of Fame coach Cathy Rush. Star players during the 60-2 run included Women's Basketball Hall of Famers Theresa Shank, Marianne Crawford and Mary Scharff.

Direct-elect inductee David Stern, who resigned in February after 30 years as NBA commissioner, will be the headliner of the August 8 ceremonies in Springfield, Mass. Also directly inducted were ABA coaching legend Bob "Slick" Leonard, African American trailblazer Nat Clifton, Lithuanian star Sarunas Marciulionis and 1960s star Guy Rodgers.

Cada vez gosto mais dele. Uma boa vitória em Miami e 4 - 0 esta regular season contra os Heat. Agora é continuar a trabalhar para chegar bem aos playoffs.
